Chapter 34: It Was Biology, Nothing Else

"Wha.. what are you doing here? How did you find me?" Lyse demanded, her voice stricken.

Instead of answering he just gave a smug grin and rocked on the heels of his feet as he looked around the room which was decorated with hand made crafts and had old ratty furniture which had been donated because the shelter could not afford to buy nice new furniture.

Lyse’s fear gave away to anger at her private sanctuary being invaded. There was a very good reason that men were not allowed to come to the shelter and it was because all of the women there had been abused by at least one man, it was also the same reason the address was hidden.

She glanced at the door nervously and when she saw no one she turned back and eyed him and said in a sharp tone.

"I already told your lawyer that I would settle accounts with you and i don’t intend to run away. Now I need you to leave." She demanded firmly and Levi raised an eyebrow at her stern voice.

He was amused at how annoyed she was to see him at her door step but what was she really expecting? That a man like himself would just let her win and walk out on his offer on her own terms?

He stubbornly stuffed his hands in his pockets and watched with glee as color rose on Lyse’s face. At the rate she was going she would burst a vein or attack him, he was interested in seeing which one would happen first.

"No." He said, his voice taunting as if wanting to know how far she would go.

Lyse clenched her fists then said through gritted teeth, "What do you want?"

"I want you to be my fake wife, I thought that I had made that obvious already." He spoke confidently as if the answer was obvious and Lyse closed her eyes for a moment.

She took deep breaths and told herself to calm down because she was an inch away from physically pushing him out of the compound.

Then speaking slowly as if she was talking to a little child, she addressed him. "I know that you are used to getting what you want but this time you are going to have to learn to accept no because I am not going to change my mind."

The amiable expression on his face suddenly hardened then he said in a deceptively soft voice.

"I don’t like to lose Lyse, it makes me act irrational."

Lyse stared at him in disbelief, wondering what she was going to do to get him to leave her alone. Her heart sank as she realized the full extent of the mess she had gotten into.

She cussed Brandon inwardly for not being able to separate his emotions from work, if she had not been forced to leave her job then she would not have gone looking for a new job and she would not be dealing with this annoyingly tenacious man.

"Listen, I am really sorry but I don’t think it would work." She softened her voice and looked up at Levi then she attempted to flatter him. "You have said yourself how irresistible you are to women, I am sure that some lucky lady will snatch up on your offer soon."

"But it’s you that I want." He said simply, his eyes drilling a hole into hers.

Lyse felt her stomach tumble at the intensity of his words and she felt a shiver run through her. She reminded herself that this man was used to playing with women’s emotions and he was just trying to do the same with her but she was not like the women he messed with.

That reminder was enough for her to shrug off any lingering feelings of lust that his words might have elicited in her. She was made of stronger stuff and had only reacted to his words because she was a woman and he was a very attractive man. It was biology, nothing else.

"Listen, I said No!" She said firmly, trying to keep her voice low so that no one else would hear.

"And I also say no to your no." He said and Lyse scrunched up her nose.

How childish. A full grown man like him and he wants to go back and forth like we are little children fighting over a toy.’

She glared at him then turned to leave, determined to leave him there. She was sure that when he was tired he would be forced to go away.

"So, is this where Janine Alvarez is hiding from her husband?" Levi asked and Lyse stopped in her tracks, her heart dropping to her belly.

"Maximillian Fernandez is his name isn’t it? That is the same person that stalked you and caused that accident also, am I right?"

Lyse turned around and Levi noticed her ashen face and he studied her.

"What did you say?" She whispered.

"I think that you are doing some great work here. The ladies are very lucky to have you." He nodded and looked around, "I could probably get the word out about this place, tell a few associates and we could get some money in here, get some supplies for the women."

Even though he spoke in a calm voice, Lyse got his meaning clearly. He was attempting to blackmail her by using the shelter. If he told people about the shelter it would indeed bring in some much needed funds but it would also strip the shelter of its anonymity.

The people that the women were running away from would look them up and find them. Levi knew it and he was holding it over her head. His eyes that were watching her face and noting every reaction told her that he knew exactly what he was doing.

"You wouldn’t," she said, her voice trembling.

Levi took a step forward, his eyes guileless. "Not if my wife was a member of the board of this shelter." He said simply.
