Chapter 28: Do Something Stupid Like Fall In Love

"Aren’t you married already?" James asked, looking extremely confused when Lyse relayed what had happened between her and Levi.

"I thought that we had agree that it was probably not real!" Lyse whispered as she looked at the door as if worried that someone would sneak in like Levi had done and listen to their conversation.

"Why would he want to get married? And to you?" James continued, his confusion deepening.

"Yeah, thanks. Why would he want to marry the mistress’s useless daughter." Lyse said sourly.

"Of course not, you know that’s not why I mean." James hurried to reassure her, "You are the most amazing girl in the world but this is Levi Van Doren we are talking about, have you seen the women that he dates?"

When Lyse raised an eyebrow at him he sighed.

"You are stunning my friend but I am talking about heiresses and supermodels. It just seems very fishy that he would chose his assistant as his wife and girl, you are so much younger than him.

"It’s just a few years difference, it’s not like he is robbing the cradle." Lyse protested and when James raised an eyebrow she sighed.

"You call that a few years? Really?"

"I mean yeah, I see what you mean." She said then she perked up instantly, "It’s fake anyway so it does not count."

James eyebrow rose even higher, "I don’t know how fake this fake marriage really is."

Lyse became exasperated, "What do you really want James? Because you were the one encouraging me to work with the hot older boss because it might become an affair."

"I am just concerned about you, Levi Van Doren is suave, sophisticated and much more mature than you are. I would hate to see you hurt again."

After watching how Brandon had hurt and destabilized Lyse, he did not want his best friend to have to go through something like that again. He feared that if Levi hurt Lyse it would be more devastating than Brandon’s.

"I’m a pretty smart girl, I know how to take care of myself." Lyse said airily but James did not smile.

She turned serious. "The marriage is just for a few months, I promise that it will be over before you know it and I won’t do something stupid like fall in love with him."

When James still did not look impressed she nudged him playfully and said, "As the wife of on of the wealthiest CEOs, there are gonna be a lot of shopping sprees."

At the mention of shopping, James face lightened up and he asked excitedly, "Are you going to buy me some things?"

"Even better, you will come with me to give your expert advice."

James jumped up and gleefully danced around, all thoughts of the cradle snatching CEO relegated to the back of his mind.

When Brooke heard Brandon call out to her, she stopped and her heart lightened.

I just worried for nothing, Brandon loves me. He is probably only acting this way because he is having troubles at work."

She turned around with an expectant smile.

"How did you know where to find Lyse?" Brandon asked. He had been looking for Lyse and she had not been in her apartment the last couple of times he had checked.

He feared that she had left the city but to hear that Brooke had seen her recently must mean that she was still around somewhere.

Brooke’s smile fell as she realized that Brandon had not called her back to apologize to her but because he wanted to know more about Lyse. Brooke clenched her fists so tight that she felt her freshly manicured nails digging into the tender skin of her palms.

"She was in the hospital." She answered sullenly.

"Lyse is sick?" He asked, appearing stricken with worry and Brooke’s mood further plummeted. It was very obvious that Brandon cared for Lyse despite his prior attempt of acting blasé.

"I guess she got into an accident or something."

"What hospital?" He demanded and when Brooke glared at him he sobered up and walked closer to her.

He gently took a hold of her hand and explained. "I only want to know because there are some papers that Lyse has to sign for the legal department and the messengers from the company have been unable to get a hold of her."

When Brooke looked doubtful, Brandon kissed her forehead then looked into her eyes. "Lyse and I are history, i don’t care about her and whatever it is that is going on with her." He said solemnly.

Feeling mollified, Brooke nodded then said, "she is at St Patrick’s in the lavender VIP suite."

To her mind, Brandon’s explanation was plausible. Lyse had left the company abruptly and there were probably some documents she needed to sign.

"You trust me don’t you?" Brandon asked as he gazed soulfully into her eyes, making her melt and feel weak at the knees.

"Of course I do Brandon, you are going to be my husband." Brooke answered.

"Now, why don’t you go to work then and I will see you later for dinner?"

Brooke pouted at him, "Why don’t we both go to the office together? I can leave my car here and after dinner I can pick it up."

"I have some places that I need to go to, we can’t go to the office together Brooke." Brandon said, a tad impatiently as he showed her the door.

Brooke stared at the shut door angrily, she had a sneaking suspicion that Brandon would try to go to the hospital to see Lyse so she got into her car and drove some way before stopping and watching Brandon’s apartment building.

Soon enough he came out and when she noticed that he was driving in the direction of St Patrick’s she angrily beat the steering wheel with her fists.

She was incensed to see that he had lied to her then she thought that maybe it was a good thing that Brandon was going to see Lyse, he would be able to confirm that she was really married and it would be even better if he met her husband there too.

With that in mind, she started to follow his car, making sure to stay several cars behind him and out of sight.
