Chapter 25: How Stupid Your Reasoning Is
"I am so sorry sir, I tried to tell her that you were not expecting any visitors but she forced her way through." His frazzled looking secretary explained.
Levi looked from her to the calm and unbothered woman who stood by the door arrogantly, looking at him as if daring him to try to refuse her entry into his office. He could not blame his secretary, there was barely anyone that this woman would not bulldoze just to get her way.
"It’s okay Justine, you may leave us alone and return to your duties." Levi said and she stepped out of the office and shut the door.
"I would fired that one if I were you." She said then without being invited she walked to the chairs opposite his desk and took a seat before daintily lifting one stockinged leg over the other and Levi raised an eyebrow.
For someone who had a son in his mid twenties, Sutton still resembled the seemingly chaste and pristine teenager that he had thought her to be until she pulled off the mask and showed him that she was a vapid, underhanded witch.
Unfortunately, he discovered her true nature when it was too late and he was already tied to her for life.
As she sat, seductively baring her long shapely legs, he was more certain that she was up to no good.
"What do you want?" He asked brusquely when it was obvious that she would not speak unless he urged her, "I am sure that I sent you this month’s check."
Then he raised an eyebrow suggestively and sneered, "Or have you grown tired of spinning Dr Marlowe around your pinky and have come to try me? You will remember that I am a hard nut to crack."
Sutton looked at him with wide eyes that might have appeared guileless to anyone but Levi who was attuned to her manipulative tendencies knew better than to be fooled.
"You know that you are the one that I have always wanted, we would have been a perfect family if you were not so stubborn, Brandon would know his father." She answered with a pout.
At the mention of Brandon, tension settled in his bones. "Well, that would have been difficult since you wanted my balls in your purse." He sneered and Sutton’s mask slipped away.
"All you had to do was accept to being my husband and I would have let you keep me and our son." She said, a trace of anger in her voice.
She had still not gotten over Levi and his rejection, he was the one that got away. The prince that was supposed to sweep her off her feet but he had been too headstrong, too independent to be chained down despite all the tactics she tried.
Sure, she had her current husband who was entirely loyal to her and if she asked him to jump his only response would be "how high?" But that was not what she wanted, it was not enough for her. She had been forced to settle for him when what she really wanted was to be Mrs Van Doren.
She had still believed that she had a chance with him after all it was obvious to all that he was lonely and unfulfilled. She had believed that because she had his son she could have him anytime that she wanted.
Those dreams had been shattered when she had been woken up in the morning by calls from ’friends’ who under the guise of commiserating with her had informed her that Levi had gotten married to some anonymous woman.
She had come to him so that he could deny it because she knew how much the paparazzi lied, Levi was going to be a bachelor forever. If she even with the threat of keeping his own son away from him had been unable to tie him down then surely there was no other woman who could do it. She refused to believe it.
"What do you want?" Levi demanded impatiently.
"I came to find out if it is true." Sutton purred sultrily, "you know how the rumors are really just false stories."
Levi dropped his pen on the table and leaned back in his chair while staring at Sutton.
"If what is true?" He asked nonchalantly, knowing what she was alluding to but enjoying the tension that was bottling up in her.
He had known that it would not take too long for Sutton to come around after hearing the story.
"I want to know if you have betrayed me and married some cheap nameless whore, I demand to know who she is." Sutton demanded, at the end of her patience.
Levi’s gaze turned hostile and he said in a quiet but deadly voice, "Permit me to say how stupid your reasoning is, how have I betrayed you a married woman?" When Sutton looked insulted he continued, "You have no right to demand anything of me."
Eyes glinting and insulted by his words, Sutton spoke, her shaking voice filled with vitriol and spite "I will never allow Brandon to recognize you as his father."
Sadness dimmed the magnificence of his eyes for a brief second and Sutton gloated at the fact that she was responsible for the pain he was feeling then he shrugged and said.
"It’s been more than two decades and you are still holding unto your vendetta despite everything I have done to make you give it up, I don’t expect anything more from you." He answered quietly then looked impatiently at her.
"Now if you are done trying to emotionally blackmail me then you can make your way out of my office unless you would prefer to be escorted out. The paparazzi might find you being bundled out more entertaining than the identity of my bride."
Sutton clenched her fists angrily, resisting the urge to slap the smirk off Levi’s face. She instead shot out of the chair and smoothed her skirt before walking out of the office, determined to discover whomever the woman was who dared to get married to Levi.
When she shut the door with a slam, Levi sighed and his shoulders slumped in tiredness.
He never let her see how much her actions hurt him because he knew that was what she wanted and he would not give her that.
Despite trying to focus on work, Levi’s attention had been shot to hell so he decided to return home in order to change then go and check on Lyse at the hospital.
When he got into the apartment and closed the door, he turned and felt something whizzing towards his face from the darkened hallway and he ducked just in time.
