I Married A Degraded Alpha -
Chapter 192: Where’s The Baby?
Chapter 192: Where’s The Baby?
The booming of the bombs outside grew louder, and they were falling faster than before.
Everyone in the bunker knew that the worst was upon them. The enemy was in full attack mode now, and they just had to survive these last few intense minutes.
"I gotta go to the bathroom," a voice suddenly piped up.
Everyone turned to look at the source of the sound, a handsome, clean-cut boy. Under the attention of everyone, he blushed fiercely and confessed, "I always gotta pee when I’m nervous."
The boy had an easy charm about him, and everyone smiled kindly at his candidness. One of the adults even pointed the way, saying, "Go ahead, kiddo, nature calls. The bathroom’s right over there."
The boy smiled shyly at everyone and made his way towards the bathroom.
Unfortunately, the bathroom was pretty close to where Xiva and his team were situated.
As the boy moved towards Xiva’s group, some people started to feel a sense of unease. Is this a coincidence or...?
Everyone anxiously watched the boy, even momentarily ignoring the ongoing bombardment outside.
Xiva and his team were wary of the boy too, their hearts jumped in their throats as the boy walked past them.
Then, the boy turned around and gave them a smile.
The next second, he lunged towards them.
At the same time, unnoticed by everyone, another person rushed out from a corner, charging at Xiva and his team.
Xiva was struck with a sense of déjà vu, reminded of when Yuri had been attacked.
"They’re human bombs!" Xiva cried out in horror, and threw himself onto the artificial womb device.
Upon hearing his warning, some people tried to restrain the two individuals, while others leaped onto Xiva, attempting to protect the artificial womb with their own bodies.
The sound of screams and cries of terror filled the air, only to be drowned out by two thunderous explosions.
The entire bunker filled with smoke, and everyone rushed towards the exit.
Just then, a strong and resolute voice echoed from outside, "We’re the reinforcement from Station 4582. The enemy forces have retreated. It’s safe for you to come out."
The people inside the bunker checked the surveillance footage. Sure enough, it was soldiers from the Alliance.
Slowly, the bunker doors opened, letting out a strong smell of gunpowder.
"What happened in there?" one of the soldiers asked.
"There were two human bombs. Please, check if there’s anyone still alive."
Without wasting a second, the soldiers rushed inside. When they arrived at the scene, all they found were body parts strewn everywhere and a faintly glowing artificial womb device.
Pointing at the device, a soldier ordered, "Take the baby to the hospital. And any injured people too."
Rubbing his face with his hand, the soldier felt a surge of grief and helplessness. All the officers and soldiers at the station had died for a barely formed child. Is it that the Empire and pirates are heartless and cruel? Or are we, the Alliance, simply too naive? When Yuri and Tuss find out about this, they may just lose their minds.
Also, this child, born into such extraordinary circumstances, is bound to shoulder an enormous burden. What will he grow up to be? Can he or she ever have a carefree childhood?
The station on Planet 4581 and the surrounding hundred miles were in ruins, especially the station itself, which had been blown into a crater several miles wide.
Gradually, wind-blown dust began to cover up the grim reminders of the disaster.
The reinforcements stayed behind to clean up the battlefield and console the public.
In the hospital, several doctors stood around the artificial womb, their expressions serious, conducting various tests for the child inside.
"All vital signs are normal. The baby’s fine," one of the doctors sighed with relief, his back drenched in cold sweat.
Others echoed the sentiment, their faces showing relief.
"Thank goodness. After so many sacrifices, if we hadn’t been able to save the baby, it would’ve been unbearable," someone murmured.
"The 458 Defense Line may not face huge insectoid swarms, but a planet with less than ten thousand troops is understaffed," another commented.
"But we need people willing to come here. Of our own kids who grew up in the 458 Defense Line, how many are willing to return after they see the world in other galaxies?"
"Sure, it’s bitterly cold here. If there are better options, of course, no one wants to stay."
"Maybe after this incident, the Alliance will deploy more troops here."
"...."
The reinforcements temporarily stayed on Planet 4581 until the Alliance could send new personnel.
The station was destroyed, and rebuilding was a massive project, requiring a lot of manpower, materials, and funds. The local battleships and mecha were completely destroyed, and the weapon stores also needed to be rebuilt and restocked. There was a lot to do.
Apart from Planet 4582, reinforcements from nearby planets began to arrive, all drafted into hard labor.
On the morning of the third day, the Second Commander Perseman and the Third Commander Boan, who had rushed here at full speed, arrived at Planet 4581.
Having arrived late, they chose to stay and oversee the post-war reconstruction.
"Have the death compensation allowances for the fallen soldiers been distributed?" Perseman asked.
"The local military department distributed it immediately."
"Double it, and debit the astracredits from my account," Perseman declared through gritted teeth.
"I’ll donate a mid-size battleship to Planet 4581," Boan added, not to be outdone.
Hearing this, the soldiers couldn’t help but smile. "On behalf of the families and all citizens of 4581, we thank both of you, commanders."
The battleship arrived at Planet 4581 on the morning of the fourth day.
Yuri and Tuss, who were still in their healing pods, hadn’t awakened yet, but their complexions were back to normal.
When their pods were finally unloaded from the ship, the two of them opened their eyes simultaneously, much to everyone’s surprise.
Yuri opened the lid of her pod and climbed out. As soon as her feet touched the ground, she shivered from the cold.
Officer Lyao quickly wrapped his thick coat around her and admonished, "Put on your shoes first."
But Yuri seemed not to hear him. She was staring blankly at the scene before her. When she tried to walk away, Officer Lyao pulled her back and put on a pair of clean boots for her.
Tuss, on the other hand, was also in a daze, letting the people around him dress him and put on his shoes.
"What happened?" Yuri asked softly. If her memory served her right, there was supposed to be a station right in front of her - a base, barracks, storage... But now, there was nothing but a vast expanse of snow.
Someone let out a sigh, and the atmosphere became instantly heavy and oppressive.
"Where are Xiva and Commander Ho?" Yuri asked again.
Tuss also turned to Officer Lyao and asked, "What exactly happened? Where are the soldiers and the child?"
Officer Lyao’s stern face flickered with a hint of sadness. "The child is fine," he said. "The others... they’re all dead. Not a single one left."
Yuri wavered, her eyes wide as she turned to look at Officer Lyao. Her clear eyes instantly reddened as she asked with a trembling voice, "What did you say?"
Officer Lyao met her gaze, "They’re all dead. Not a single one left. They died to prevent the enemy from landing on Planet 4581, to protect the citizens and the child."
