I Married A Degraded Alpha -
Chapter 183: Match-making
Chapter 183: Match-making
After Edgar, Cass, and Priscilla had arrived, a steady stream of new recruits began to report in.
Yuri, who was pregnant and shouldn’t keep sitting for long periods, handed over the task of receiving the new arrivals to Edgar, Cass, and Priscilla.
By the second day, the new recruits were hurried onto warships, where they began learning from Daleks and the others about how to operate the vessels.
Two weeks later, all five hundred of Tuss’s troops and one thousand under Yuri’s command had arrived on Planet 4581.
Once all the recruits arrived, Yuri gave them a day off to get familiar with their outpost and even the entire lay of Planet 4581, including its road network and air routes.
Then, the training for new recruits began, with Daleks and the others participating as well.
Tuss and Yuri, who were leading troops for the first time and had no experience in training new recruits, were initially assisted by Xiva and Commander Ho. Only after a month did Tuss begin leading the training independently.
As for Yuri, pregnant as she was, she either observed from the sidelines or busied herself with her own tasks.
One day, as Yuri was working on a mecha mental sensor, Ron and Sonia dropped by unexpectedly.
Ron, his lower leg missing a section, moved surprisingly smoothly with the help of a crutch.
Sonia, shyly following her brother, carried a basket of fruit.
Pointing to the dining table, Yuri said, "Put the stuff there and find yourself a chair. I’ll get you some water and something to eat."
Ron wanted to decline the offer, saying they wouldn’t stay long, but his words caught in his throat, and Yuri had already headed into the kitchen.
She returned with two mugs of hot water for the siblings to warm their hands, and then rummaged through the cupboard for an assortment of snacks brought by Daleks and the others.
Between them, they had brought several hundred pounds of snacks.
"I appreciate the hospitality," Ron began, "but we’re just here to say goodbye. We’ll leave after our talk."
Raising an eyebrow, Yuri asked, "Goodbye? Where are you going?"
"Sonia has been accepted to Military Academy No. 1. She’ll be studying on Planet Alpha. I’m taking her there, and we’ll get her medical treatment en route," Ron paused before continuing, "Sonia has a genetic disease. We’ve never had the money for treatment until now. Thanks to your help last time, we made a decent amount from the sale of the pelts. Plus, Sonia has differentiated into a beta, so the Alliance will cover some of the medical expenses. This time, Sonia should be able to fully recover."
Ron smiled, his eyes filled with hope for the future.
Understanding dawned on Yuri. That’s why Sonia was so skinny; she has a genetic disease.
"Will you be coming back here afterward?" Yuri asked Ron.
"I will. With my condition, I can’t support myself on Planet Alpha," Ron said with a wry smile.
Looking at his leg, Yuri thought for a moment before suggesting, "While you’re on Planet Alpha, you should consider getting a prosthetic leg."
"I can’t afford it," Ron admitted bashfully.
"I tried to convince my brother to get the prosthetic first, but he insists on getting my treatment first," Sonia murmured, her face torn between guilt and indecision.
"You’re an S-tier beta, once you’re at Military Academy No. 1, earning your own living, even supporting your brother, won’t be a problem. But the prerequisite is that you have a healthy body. Your brother’s leg can wait, but your disease can’t. The pressure at Military Academy No. 1 is high, and if your health isn’t good, you won’t be able to cope," Yuri advised.
Ron chuckled, "That’s exactly what I told her."
Sonia clenched her hands on her lap, exposing her delicate veins, "Once I get better, I’ll start saving up to get my brother’s leg treated."
"That doesn’t have to wait. How about I pay for your brother’s prosthetic leg, and in return, he helps me with some farming? I’ll even pay him a salary," Yuri offered.
Ron was capable of operating a mecha, so helping her with some mechanized farming wouldn’t be a problem.
Ron and Sonia were taken aback by Yuri’s proposition, staring at her in bewilderment.
"Tuss and I have an ore planet. The mine was exhausted a few years back, and now we’re turning to farming and raising livestock. The work may be a little varied, but it shouldn’t be tiring. Everything can be done with machines," Yuri explained.
Ron looked at his sister, thinking that with her off to Planet Alpha for school, he wouldn’t have anyone left to worry about on Planet 4581. Moreover, with his broken leg and damaged mecha, his livelihood was uncertain. Becoming a farmer on another planet seemed like a reasonable option.
Sonia also looked at Ron, knowing that farming would be safer than hunting insectoids. She hoped her brother would accept Officer Yuri’s proposal.
Reading each other’s thoughts in their eyes, the siblings shared a knowing smile, and rose to bow deeply to Yuri.
Everything was understood without words.
"You don’t have to be formal. I value your skills. It’s a win-win for us," Yuri remarked.
Ron shook his head, "You may not need someone who can operate machines, but I do need a job to sustain myself."
"When are you leaving?" Yuri changed the subject.
"Within the week. It would be best if we can get Sonia’s treatment completed before school starts," Ron replied.
"Perfect, I have a group of classmates from Military Academy No. 1 who will be returning to Planet Alpha in a few days. You can travel with them, it would be good to have someone accompanying you," Yuri suggested, not giving Ron and Sonia a chance to decline. "They’ll be back once their training is over. Wait here, I’ll introduce you to them. Especially you, Sonia, if you encounter any difficulties at school, they can help."
Unable to find a way to decline Yuri’s kindness, Ron and Sonia decided to stay and wait.
Yuri chatted with them about Planet Alpha, Military Academy No. 1, the ore planet, and Zeek on the ore planet. Most of the time, it was Yuri doing the talking and the siblings listening.
Time passed quickly.
A boisterous group of energetic young voices grew louder as they approached, and just as they reached the door, Yuri called out, "Daleks, Ender, come in."
"Right away, Officer Yuri," came the prompt reply.
Daleks and Ender rushed in, playfully pushing Tuss aside in their haste.
"Yuri, you have visitors," Daleks noted casually, heading to the kitchen to wash his hands and get a drink of water.
Ender nodded respectfully towards Ron and Sonia, and made his way to the kitchen.
Soon enough, both him and Daleks emerged from the kitchen, each holding a cup filled with water.
"This is Ron and this is Sonia, they are siblings. Sonia has been admitted to Military Academy No. 1, and her brother is taking her to start school while seeking medical treatment along the way. They are unfamiliar with their surroundings, and since you’re going the same way, please look after them." Yuri instructed.
Pointing towards Ender and Daleks, she continued, "These are Ender and Daleks, don’t hesitate to approach them for any help. Enough said, exchange your contact numbers now."
Daleks was the first to give out his number, "Yuri’s friends are my friends. If anyone dares to bully you at Military Academy No. 1, just mention my name."
"Are you guys going for medical treatment? What’s the illness? Have you made an appointment with a specialist? My uncle is a doctor, I can help you get a consultation." Ender asked softly, his smile as warm as spring.
Hearing that Ender had a doctor uncle, Ron immediately detailed Sonia’s illness to him. The group began to chat and the atmosphere was quite harmonious.
Two hours later.
Ron left with his sister, appearing lighter and more upright than when he arrived, as if he’d finally cast off a heavy burden.
Ender and Daleks also returned to the room next door.
"Why are you treating Ron and Sonia differently?" Tuss asked curiously, knowing that Yuri had been quite caring towards the siblings.
"It might be because I’m pregnant and my heart softens easily. The two are quite pitiful, don’t you think?" Yuri asked, smiling.
Tuss nodded, "They are indeed in a difficult situation, but I think you have ulterior motives."
Yuri laughed, "Did you figure it out?"
"Mmm, I did."
"I have taken a liking to Sonia. She’s a very clear-headed girl. I think she would be a good match for either Ender or Daleks."
"You want to play matchmaker?"
"I’m just giving them an opportunity to get to know each other. Whether they can be together or not, it’s entirely up to them."
"Well, Sonia is too young, Ender might not be interested."
"No, Ender has a soft side about him. He might just like someone who’s gentle and sensible."
