I Married A Degraded Alpha -
Chapter 149: Keeping It From Her
Chapter 149: Keeping It From Her
The soldier led Yuri to another auditorium. It was eleven o’clock at night. Most of the people inside the auditorium were older alphas, who should, theoretically, be asleep at this hour, but they were not.
Even before Yuri got close, she could hear the muffled, rhythmic thumping sounds coming from inside. It was ceaseless, waxing and waning.
This was a sound Yuri was all too familiar with. It was the sound of alphas in unbearable pain, unable to sleep, pounding their heads against the walls and furniture.
She had heard this sound many times, and each time, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity.
"I’ll stay by the door. I won’t go in," Yuri said.
The soldier didn’t ask why. He ordered a large chair, reserved specifically for Yuri, to be brought over and placed by the door.
Four hours passed, and everyone inside the auditorium had fallen asleep, their snoring becoming a chorus. At the entrance of the auditorium, in her spacious chair, Yuri, too, had drifted off due to exhaustion.
Seeing this, the soldier draped a blanket over her, while he and his partner dutifully stood guard nearby.
He suppressed his shock and sent a message to Officer Lyao: Tonight, Yuri had helped three thousand alphas groom their Sea of Consciousness.
Officer Lyao was on his way to the border when he received the soldier’s message. He took a moment to think before responding: Reinforce the manpower, do everything possible to ensure her safety. Also, do not interfere with her decisions.
Upon reading Officer Lyao’s reply, the soldier immediately arranged for more manpower.
By the time Yuri woke up, it was already seven in the morning.
"Your car is ready. You can continue sleeping in there if you like," the soldier offered.
Yawning and barely able to open her eyes, Yuri accepted without hesitation. "I appreciate it."
"Not at all, it’s the least we could do," the soldier responded with a friendly smile.
Yuri slept all the way to the school entrance, where the soldier woke her up.
"Shall we come to pick you up in the evening?" he asked.
"No need. I’ll head over earlier in the afternoon." Instead of going to the cafeteria after school as she did before, she planned to depart right after school ended, which could save her an hour. This would allow her to go to bed an hour earlier in the evening.
As for whether to eat regular meals or nutrient fluids, it didn’t matter that much to her anymore.
The first attempt at helping three thousand alphas groom their Sea of Consciousness had brought noticeable improvement to her psychic power, but her fatigue had also doubled.
As soon as her classes ended, Yuri fell asleep right on her desk. She remained asleep until the second period started, not waking up.
The teacher habitually looked for her and found Yuri’s fluffy head on the desk. The teacher gestured at the class monitor, "What happened?"
The class monitor shrugged, "I’m not sure. Should I wake her up?"
"No need. She’s already studying fourth-grade material on her own. Whether she attends the class is up to her. If she doesn’t understand something, she can come to me," the teacher said nonchalantly.
The students gawked in surprise, partly due to the teacher’s blatant favoritism, and partly because of what the teacher had said. We’re only in second grade, and she’s already studying fourth-grade material? What’s next? She’s planning to skip a grade, or two grades?
That night, Yuri increased the number of people she was helping by another five hundred.
The soldier was numb with shock. Why is it that others can barely handle a hundred, yet she can double that number and add five hundred more in such a short time?
This time, Yuri slept until noon the next day, with the soldier helping her to get the day off.
"Are you still going to school?" he asked her.
"No," Yuri answered simply. She planned to take a leave of absence from school and live in the theater for a while.
Yuri first asked her teachers for a leave of absence. After doing so, she chugged five bottles of Nutrient Fluids in one go, then said to the soldier, "Let’s continue to help navigate the Sea of Consciousness."
The soldier was taken aback for a moment before saying, "Alright."
In the cafeteria of Military Academy No. 1, Daleks, Ender, and others finished their meal but saw no sign of Yuri.
Daleks: "What’s up with Yuri these days? Even her dinners have been replaced with Nutrient Fluids?"
Ender replied, "She’s not at school. She took a leave, with no specified return date."
Daleks: "What?"
Ender: "She’s at the theater. According to her teachers, she’s already studying fourth-grade material. Whether she attends class or not is up to her. She just needs to take the midterms and final exams."
Daleks: "....I’m envious."
Kilana: "We have a holiday in two days. Should we visit Yuri?"
Daleks nodded. "Sure."
Before the holiday arrived, Daleks, Ender, and Kilana rushed to the theater that very night.
When they arrived at the theater, Yuri was still helping the alphas navigate their Sea of Consciousness.
"What’s so urgent?" the soldier asked them in a low voice.
"Haven’t you checked the interstellar network?" Daleks counter-questioned him.
Ender immediately opened the interstellar network and said, "A user from the Empire has shared a video from the Empire’s battlefield. In the video, we see that the Empire’s forces are luring a level-eight insectoid queen towards our Alliance’s territory."
"How can a level-eight insectoid queen listen to them?" The soldier’s face darkened as he watched the video.
"They have her eggs, so I’ve heard," Ender said, his face extremely grim.
"Shameless. Despicable." The soldier cursed in anger.
"That’s not even the worst part," Ender opened another video. The protagonist of this video was not insectoids, but the "innocent" Princess Jira.
In the video, Princess Jira, with a pale face and leaning weakly against a soldier, stared at the camera with her deep blue eyes and pleaded, "I’ve tried my best, but I can’t beat that level-eight insectoid. Yuri, your psychic power is the strongest I’ve ever seen. Can you deal with this level-eight insectoid queen? Apart from you, nobody can defeat her. For the sake of the entire galaxy, I beg you to take action, please."
"Such a drama queen," the soldier gritted his teeth, his face distorted in anger. He turned to Ender, deciding on the spot, "Don’t tell this to Officer Yuri."
Ender, Daleks, and Kilana looked at the soldier in surprise, saying, "You want to hide it from her?"
The soldier nodded, "As long as the Alliance doesn’t send Yuri to the battlefield, none of you should mention this to her. A level-eight insectoid queen, that isn’t something one person can handle alone. Not telling her is for her own good."
Hearing this, Ender realized their rashness that night. "We will go back right away. After we return, I will inform our classmates not to mention this to Yuri."
"Yes, I will send messages to those classmates right now, telling them not to let this slip to Yuri," Daleks immediately lowered his head to compose messages.
Ender, Daleks, and Kilana arrived in a rush and left in a hurry, with Yuri remaining none the wiser.
That night, the Third Commander left Planet alpha for the battlefield.
At the same time, the soldier received an order from Officer Lyao, commanding him to stop Yuri at all costs and prevent her from leaving Planet alpha.
The soldier took a deep breath, feeling the difficulty of the task at hand, but gritted his teeth and replied: Received.
