Chapter 4 – Level 4 Mutation

Part 1

Meanwhile, Yuuya and the others were relaxing at the inn.

Night and the others were spending their time at home as they pleased.

“Woof…”

“Fugo!”

“Pi! Pi!”

Akatsuki and Ciel happily chased each other next to Night, who was taking a nap.

“Nya~”

“Puo?”

In another place, Stella was basking in the sun. Don was doing the same while watching her.

The atmosphere was peaceful at first, but it became more intense as the chase continued. Akatsuki accidentally stepped on Stella’s tail while she was sunbathing.

“Funyaaa!”

“Buhi?”

However, Akatsuki didn’t notice and continued chasing Ciel.

Seeing this, Stella quietly exploded with anger. She quickly approached Akatsuki and attacked him.

“Fushaaa!”

“Bu-buhi?”

Blown away by Stella’s sudden attack, Akatsuki didn’t understand what was happening.

“Nya.”

After knocking Akatsuki away, Stella’s anger subsided, and she tried to resume sunbathing.

But…

“Fugoooooo!”

“Nya?”

Akatsuki, who had been knocked away, let out an angry cry and glared at Stella.

It all started when Akatsuki stepped on Stella’s tail. Akatsuki hadn’t noticed, so he thought Stella had suddenly attacked him.

That’s why he was angry at her for attacking him out of the blue.

However, Stella couldn’t understand why Akatsuki was angry. She glared back at him as if to say, “I’m the one who should be angry!”

Then…

“Fugoooooo!”

“Nyaaaaaaa!”

They attacked each other at the same time and rolled around like a ball of yarn.

As they struggled, flailing their short limbs, they looked like they were playing, so Ciel joined in.

“Pipi! Pii!”

“Fugo!?”

“Nyaa!”

The three became even more entangled. Don watched them and imitated them, charging into the pile.

“Puooon!”

“Fu-fugo!?”

“Pi, pii!”

“Nyaa!?”

The three, who had been fighting just moments before, were no match for Don’s weight. They hurriedly tried to escape.

However, it was too late, and Don crushed the three of them.

“Fugo…!”

“Pi, pii…”

“Nyaa…”

“Puonn♪”

As a divine beast created by the gods of Earth, Don had been ignored and treated as a slave by them.

Because of this, perhaps, Don has a very pure personality. Now that he was part of Yuuya’s family, he spent his days imitating Night and the others.

This time was no different. He joined Akatsuki and the others in roughhousing and ended up in a terrible situation.

“Woof…”

Night, who had been watching the situation unfold, stood up as if to say, “It can’t be helped,” and approached Don.

He grabbed Don by the scruff of his neck and pulled him away from the others.

“Puo?”

Don was confused as to why he had been pulled away.

“Woof. Woof.”

“Puo? Puooon…”

Night explained to Don that the three were in trouble and that he was too heavy. Don looked a little sad, but he understood.

The three apologized to Night with apologetic expressions after being rescued.

“Fugo…”

“Pii…”

“Nya…”

“Woof. Woof.”

Night barked as if to say, “Be careful next time,” then resumed his nap.

“…Good grief, what on earth are they doing?”

Seeing the three of them, Ouma muttered in exasperation.

Kuuya approached Ouma.

“Come on, it’s fine. This is proof that everything is peaceful.”

“Even so, they’re too complacent.”

“That may be true, but they were fighting constantly until recently. Let’s let them have some fun.”

“… Fine. Their master, Yuuya, has completely entered peace mode himself.”

“I’m sure he’s staying at the inn. Oh, the hot springs. That’s nice.”

Kuuya seemed to be reminiscing about the past as he said this.

“Hmph. All you’re going to do is soak in the water.”

“What? Do you dislike baths, Ouma-dono?”

“That’s not it. I’m just saying it’s not much different from bathing.”

Kuuya smiled wryly at Ouma’s extreme words.

“Well, you are a dragon, after all. Your body structure is different. Humans would catch a cold if they only bathed in water.”

“What fragile creatures.”

“Come now. Besides, I’m sure the inn serves delicious food, and I hope Yuuya can relax.”

“What!?”

Ouma reacted violently to Yuuya’s words.

“Hey, what did you just say?”

“What do you mean?”

“The food!”

“Food? Oh, you mean the delicious food at the inn?”

“The food at the inn is delicious?”

Kuuya nodded, feeling slightly overwhelmed by Ouma’s enthusiasm.

“O-Of course. The ingredients are carefully selected, and you can enjoy dishes that are hard to find at home.”

Hearing Kuuya’s explanation, Ouma staggered backward.

“Wh-What is this? I can’t let this happen!”

“Ouma-dono?”

Kuuya called out, but his words didn’t reach Ouma. Ouma hurried to where Meiko was cleaning the house.

“Hey, Meiko!”

“Eh? Ouma-sama? Is something wrong?”

Meiko was surprised by Ouma’s fierce expression.

Ouma looked Meiko straight in the eye and said,

“Make tonight’s dinner like a meal from a Japanese inn!”

“Eh… What!?”

Stunned by the sudden, unreasonable request, Meiko stood there in silence. Ouma continued.

“I hear that Japanese inn meals are delicious. I want to eat one too. So, Meiko, you make it.”

“But you can’t just say that out of the blue. This isn’t an inn, and we don’t have that many ingredients.”

“What?! Is there no one in your group who can make inn food?”

“Well, there might be, but I can’t just pick up that kind of experience on a whim.”

“What? So, I can’t eat inn cuisine?”

“I’m sorry, but that’s how it is.”

After being told it was impossible, Ouma staggered backward again.

Seeing him like that, Meiko felt sorry for Ouma and immediately followed up.

“Well, I can’t cook it, but let’s ask Master to take us to an inn!”

“…What? Yuuya?”

“Yes! Master would be happy to go out with us and Ouma-sama.”

Ouma thought about it for a moment, then let out a big sigh.

“Ugh… I guess I have no choice but to endure it this time. But when Yuuya comes back, I’ll tell him to take me to the inn next time. Meiko, make sure to tell him, too, okay?”

“I-I understand!”

Satisfied with Meiko’s response, Ouma found a suitable spot and fell asleep.

…That evening, for Ouma’s sake, a generous spread of elaborate dishes was prepared, though not quite inn-style cuisine.

***

The next day:

We were at the ski resort, which was connected to the inn.

“Yay! This is fun!”

Saying that, Kaede skied gracefully.

Everyone there was a beginner at skiing and snowboarding, but they were all able to ski smoothly once they tried it.

Luna and Yuti were no surprise; Merl was pretty athletic, and Lexia-san was always active, so she was good, too.

Therefore, the school idol group mastered skiing with ease.

Kaori, however, took a little longer to get used to it.

Still, with everyone’s help, she was able to ski in the end.

Merl and I were snowboarding while everyone else was skiing.

“This is my first time sliding on snow like this!”

“Yeah, on our planet, the only way we could play in the snow was to pack it together and throw it at each other. But this is really fun.”

“It’s comfortable. Let’s keep going.”

“If we ride that thing over there, it’ll take us to the top of the mountain, right? It looks like it would be fun to slide down from there.”

Hearing Merl’s words, Kaori smiled wryly.

“E-Everyone is so amazing. I’m afraid to go up there.”

“You shouldn’t push yourself too hard.”

“N-No, I’m here with everyone, so I want to try!”

With that determination, Kaori practiced diligently to improve her skills.

By the way, the camera crew only filmed the first part of today’s shoot and then left. Now it’s just us.

I asked them how the photos would be used, but…

“Well… It depends on the president of Star Production and Kitaraku-san…”

I was told, but in the end, I didn’t really understand.

I’m sure nothing strange will happen, though.

This ski resort has a variety of courses, including steep slopes, bumpy courses, and courses with small obstacles. It’s a place where everyone from beginners to advanced skiers can enjoy themselves.

Then, Kaori suddenly noticed a certain course and turned to me.

“Um, Yuuya-san…”

“Hm?”

“Yuuya-san, can you ski that route over there?”

“Huh?”

When I looked at the course she was pointing to, I saw a sign that said, “Heaven Course.”

“Heaven Course? Does it have a view like heaven?”

“No, it’s just that it’s so dangerous, you might end up in heaven. That’s why it’s called the ‘Heaven Course.'”

“That’s what ‘heaven’ means!?”

How dangerous was this course? The fact that it’s called the Heaven Course instead of the Hell Course made it even scarier.

No matter how you look at it, it’s an expert-level course, so it must be impossible.

I mean, today was my first time snowboarding!

As I was thinking this, Lexia-san approached us.

“You can do it, Yuuya-sama!”

“What!?”

“Come on! I want to see you snowboard beautifully!”

“Ugh!”

She lit up and stared intently at me.

Her gaze was so intense that I couldn’t say no. I ended up agreeing to do it.

To get to the Heaven Course, you have to take a special lift. The scary thing is that you can’t see the course until you reach the top. It’s located in a separate area of the ski resort.

This was too scary. I wondered if I’d be okay.

If it was just snowboarding, I could power through with my improved physical strength. Worst case, I could give it my all and not worry about getting hurt.

When I arrived at the top, I saw the course for the first time.

“Huh? Just a single path?”

For some reason, the course in front of me looked like a single path.

However, the forest beside the course seemed unusually close. Maybe it was just a matter of perspective.

In any case, nothing else caught my attention. Was it really the most difficult course?

I’d prefer it to be easy.

“Yuuya-kun! Go for it!”

“Yuuya! We’re counting on you!”

“When did you guys get here?”

Before I knew it, Kaede and the others had gathered at the end of the course, waiting for me to slide down.

Sigh. At this point, I had no choice but to slide down.

With my mind made up, I slid into the course at full speed.

But as soon as I started, I realized how difficult the course was.

The snow made it difficult to see, but the entire course, which looked like a straight path, was actually covered in severe bumps and uneven terrain.

As a result, if you slid too fast, the bumps would cause you to lose control of your board and fall.

Right where I was about to fall, there were also obstacles hidden by the snow. If I didn’t spot them in time, I would collide with them before I could regain my balance and fall again.

The uneven terrain was so severe that, even if I managed to avoid the obstacles, the momentum of the slide would cause me to jump high into the air.

Aren’t those camouflaged obstacles excessive?

You could definitely get seriously injured!

Of course, I also collided with the snowboard’s momentum and the bump, which sent me flying into the air.

If I landed like this, I’d end up falling on the obstacles or uneven ground.

But…

“Hmph…”

I used the momentum of being launched into the air. I twisted my body as hard as I could and landed neatly after spinning three times vertically, clearing the obstacle.

Then, I glided smoothly along the edges of the bumps.

“What!? The course is narrow!”

As I continued straight ahead, I realized that the path had narrowed without my noticing.

The trees along the course were closing in, leaving no space to slide properly.

It wasn’t an issue of my sense of distance after all! The course was physically narrowing!

As I continued forward, an even more unbelievable sight appeared before my eyes.

It was…

“No way, seriously…!”

A course that looked like a roller coaster was spinning around once, right in front of me!

“It blended in with the single-lane course, so I didn’t notice it at all.”

I suppose something called the Heaven Course couldn’t be that easy.

Still, this was too much! Is there anyone who could do this?

On top of that, the downhill slope had become steeper than I realized, and I was going so fast that I couldn’t stop.

“Kuh… But I have no choice but to do it…”

I made up my mind and rushed into the looping course.

Fortunately, there were no obstacles or bumps, so I could dive in with momentum.

As I reached the peak, an intense floating sensation overwhelmed me, and my heart pounded.

Nevertheless, I managed to complete the loop safely and entered the final section.

It was a large jump ramp, and I used the momentum from the loop to perform a spectacular jump.

I twisted my body as much as possible and landed successfully, sliding to a stop.

“I did it! I managed to slide down…”

After finishing the slide, I calmed my racing heart and breathed a sigh of relief.

Wow, it really lived up to its name, the Heaven Course. Actually, I didn’t think anyone could slide down that.

“Th-That was amazing! You’re amazing, Yuuya-kun!”

“As usual, you’re incredible…”

Then, Kaede and Luna, who had been watching me, praised me.

Lexia-san and the others came over, too.

“As expected of Yuuya-sama! You snowboarded perfectly, as always!”

“That was amazing, Yuuya-san! I’ll definitely be able to ski as well as you by the end of the day!”

“Reckless. You should start with the basics.”

“Haha… Regardless of how you put it, I agree with Yuti-san.”

“N-No way…”

Kaori’s shoulders slumped at Merl and Yuti’s words.

Seeing her like that, we couldn’t help but laugh.
