Part 3
After running a decent distance, I safely arrived at the shop where Akira works.
Just like me, there were many customers around the shop looking for cakes. I could tell that it was very popular.
When I entered, Akira seemed to be the only employee, busy serving customers.
When there was a moment when no one was around, I was about to speak to him, but then I noticed that he looked troubled.
What’s wrong?
“Akira?”
“Huh? Oh, Yuuya! Did you come to buy a cake?”“Um, I came to pick up the cake that Ryo and the others ordered.”
“Oh, right! Today is Christmas, and it’s the day they mentioned for their party. I’ve got it ready!”
With that, Akira brought a box of cakes from the back of the store.
“This is the strawberry cake Ryo ordered.”
“Oh…!”
The cake he showed me was topped with fresh strawberries and looked delicious.
“I already received the payment, so you can take it with you.”
“Thank you! But it feels strange to be treated so kindly by Akira.”
“You’re so mean, Yuuya!”
“Eh?”
“I was told the same thing when Ryo came to order a cake.”
“Ah…”
I felt bad for Akira, but I couldn’t help feeling a little uncomfortable. I’m sorry.
I tried to change the subject and asked Akira about his earlier behavior.
“T-That’s right! You seemed troubled. Did something happen?”
“Huh? Oh… actually, several other part-time workers were supposed to come in today, but they got sick or had to cancel at the last minute. Since it’s Christmas, there’s no one else who can help out.”
“I see. That’s why you were working alone in the store.”
I understood why he was so busy, and Akira continued.
“Well, the store is busy, but more than that, the deliveries are…”
“Deliveries?”
“Yes, Yuuya and the others made reservations for pickup at the store, but we also offer a delivery service. Everyone except me is rushing to deliver the cakes, but we’re short-handed and won’t be able to deliver them all on time. I don’t know what to do…”
Akira looked really troubled.
Hmm… If it’s okay with the store, I’d like to help him out.
“Would you like me to help?”
“Huh?”
“You seem to be in trouble, and I have time. I think I can help a little. Would it be okay for me to help out of the blue?”
“I’d have to ask the manager, but… Are you sure it’s okay? Isn’t there a party today?”
“Yes, but the people waiting for the cakes are probably looking forward to today, too, right?”
“I know, but…”
“Why don’t you ask the manager first? I’m fine here.”
“I-I understand.”
Akira was confused, but he was still in trouble, so he hurried to check with the manager.
Then, he returned from the back of the store with a woman.
“You said you’d help out…?”
“Ah, yes!”
“I’m Amai, the manager of this store. Akira-kun told me about you. Are you sure you want to help?”
“Yes, it’s fine! I know it might seem strange to have a stranger offer help, but…”
“No, we need all the help we can get right now. Besides, you know Akira-kun, right?”
“Yes! Yuuya-kun is just as talented as I am. I’m sure it’ll be fine if you let him help!”
“Ah, ahaha…”
I smiled wryly at Akira’s introduction as Amai-san nodded.
“If Akira-kun, who works so hard here, says so, then you must be really amazing. In that case, would you mind helping us out?”
“You can count on me!”
And so I decided to help out at the shop.
Immediately, Amai-san came from the back of the shop and brought out the cakes to be delivered.
“This is the cake… Is it okay?”
“Is this all? I can carry more.”
“What? But you’re not riding here on a bicycle, are you?”
If you think about it, it’s hard to imagine someone with empty hands carrying countless cakes at once.
As I wondered how to explain this, Akira came to my rescue.
“Don’t worry, manager! Yuuya-kun will be fine! After all, he’s my rival!”
“That’s not really a reason…”
I couldn’t help but look speechless at Akira’s persuasion. Amai-san continued with a somewhat uneasy look.
“Well… I’ll bring the rest, too, but let me know if it’s too much.”
With that, Amai-san went back inside and brought out more cakes.
In the end, there were twenty cakes to be delivered.
Not all of them were whole cakes, but trying to carry that many at once made me wish I had a motorcycle or a car. [T/n: You can buy them, though.]
Still, I could carry them all with both hands, so I figured I could manage.
“Um, could you give me a bag to put them in?”
“Eh? We have some, but if you put them all in one bag, the cakes will…”
“No, it’s okay! I’ll just borrow it!”
As soon as I finished speaking, Amai-san handed me a white cloth bag that looked like something Santa would carry.
“This is…”
“Actually, we prepared Santa Claus items for the store decorations and uniforms for the Christmas season, but we ended up not using them. I’m sorry to give you the leftovers…”
“No, it’s okay! Since you went to the trouble of preparing a costume for today, why don’t I wear it?”
“I-Is that okay?”
Amai-san’s eyes widened at my suggestion.
“Sure! I’ll just go change.”
I quickly took the Santa costume and changed into it where Akira had guided me.
The customers would be happier if I delivered the cakes in this outfit.
“Well, I’m off!”
I slung the bag over my shoulder, took the list of delivery addresses, and balanced ten cake boxes in each hand.
Of course, I secretly reinforced the boxes with magic so the weight of the cakes wouldn’t crush the others.
The customers and Amai-san, who had been watching, were surprised.
“Oh!”
“That’s amazing!”
“Even with all those boxes stacked on top of each other, they don’t look like they’re going to collapse…”
With everyone’s eyes on me, I moved to a less crowded area outside the store first.
Then, I quickly stored all the delivery cakes in the Item Box.
Now, I didn’t have to worry about the cakes collapsing during delivery.
However, if I walked around empty-handed, the other delivery staff might find it suspicious, so I borrowed a bag.
Now that I was ready, all I had to do was hurry and deliver the cakes.
“Everyone’s waiting for the cakes, so I need to hurry. But I can’t exactly speed through the streets…”
If I rushed too much, I might collide with people while driving normally.
Then…
I suddenly looked up at the sky.
“Yeah, let’s use the sky.”
I gathered magic at my feet and rushed into the sky.
Then, I started running through it.
I tried to move as inconspicuously as possible, but…
“H-Hey, what was that?”
“What? Did you see a figure cross the sky?”
“Was that Santa?”
“No way! It’s still daytime! Besides, Santa rides a sleigh, right?”
“Then what was flying?”
“Maybe it was just your imagination.”
“No, it was definitely something flying!”
Several people saw me.
I used my Presence Concealment skill properly, but they were sharp… Maybe they all happened to look up at the sky at the same time.
I was flying pretty fast, so they couldn’t have seen my face.
I flew through the air, hurrying to the cake’s delivery destination.
Just as I pressed the doorbell of the house where the cake was to be delivered,
“Hey, you’re late!”
A middle-aged woman appeared and said.
I was in a hurry, but I couldn’t help being a little late.
I bowed my head in apology.
“I’m sorry I was late.”
“If you don’t deliver on time, my schedule will be…”
?”
I tilted my head at the woman, who suddenly fell silent and stared blankly at my face.
Wh-What is it?”
Then, the woman’s eyes lit up.
“Oh my! You’re so handsome! Why are you at my house?”
“Eh? Ah, I’m delivering a cake…”
“Oh, I see! Well, I’ll forgive you this time, but be more careful next time!”
“Th-Thank you very much!”
She patted me on the back repeatedly.
…I didn’t really understand what was going on, but thankfully, she forgave me.
There were still more cakes to deliver, though, so I quickly said goodbye and headed to the next house.
Then, a woman and a child came out to receive the delivery.
“Excuse me! Cake delivery!”
“Okay!”
“Mom, the cake is here!”
The mother nodded as her child ran out energetically.
“Oh, here’s the cake.”
“He was really looking forward to this. Thank you.”
“Cake, cake!”
With the child smiling happily beside her, I handed her the cake, got her signature, and hurriedly left, rushing back into the sky.
I still had deliveries to make, so I had to hurry!
The child and his mother watched me rush into the sky right in front of them, their eyes wide with surprise.
“What? No way… He’s flying in the sky!”
“That’s amazing! It’s the real Santa Claus!”
Oh no… I was in such a hurry that I forgot to check if they went inside.
Well, it’s just the two of them, so it should be okay.
I told myself that, but I was more careful as I continued delivering cakes.
──And so, after delivering all the cakes, I returned to the store.
“I’m done with the deliveries.”
“What, already!?”
Akira and Amai-san were surprised by my early return.
Then, Amai-san looked worried.
“You really delivered them all, right…?”
“Yes, well… I don’t have any way to prove it, but…”
I did get signatures for delivery, but that alone isn’t enough to prove it.
I didn’t know what to do when, suddenly, the store phone rang.
Amai-san answered the phone…
“Hello, this is Sweet Magic. Oh, Yamada-san! It’s been a while! What? Oh, yes. No, he’s only here today. Yes… Thank you very much! Goodbye…”
Amai-san hung up the phone, looking somewhat dazed. She quickly came to her senses, though, and called out to me.
“Yu-Yuuya-kun…”
“Eh? Is there a problem?”
“No, that’s not it! I just got a call from Yamada-san. She’s one of our regular customers. She said she received a delivery from you. So… you delivered it properly…”
Apparently, the previous phone call confirmed that I had made the delivery, and Amai-san was surprised.
“Yamada-san asked me if Yuuya-kun works here. If you’re interested, would you like to work here?”
“Huh!? Oh, no, I mean… I’m flattered that you asked, but… I’m sorry.”
“I see. Yamada-san can be difficult, but she likes Yuuya-kun. Most importantly, if you can deliver so quickly, I’d like to hire you… But I guess it can’t be helped.”
Amai-san seemed to understand that I wasn’t interested and sighed as she gave up.
Phew… I’m glad… I didn’t think she would ask me to work there…
“More than that, thank you so much! You really saved me. Here’s your pay.”
“Ah… thank you!”
“If you ever become interested again, please let me know. Of course, you’re always welcome to come as a customer.”
“As expected of Yuuya! Even I, the ‘Prince of Sweets,’ can’t lose to you!”
“Ah, ahaha… Akira, work hard, too. Merry Christmas!”
After saying goodbye to them, I hurried back to the party venue.
