Chapter 55: Chapter 55 Mr. Spike

Alina’s heart melted right there. She cupped his tiny cheek, feeling the warmth of his soft skin under her palm. "I loved it, Lucian. You’re very strong... and very gentle, too. That makes you special."

Lucian’s eyes flickered with unknown emotions. He gave the smallest nod, then turned with that perfect demon prince grace, walking back to his seat like a miniature king who’d just blessed the room with his presence.

Alina watched him sit down, her eyes shining.

She stood tall, clapping her hands softly. "That was wonderful, my darlings. All of you are precious and amazing in your own ways. Now, who wants a snack?"

Everyone’s faces lit up when they heard it, and they all started cheering.

Alina smiled and carefully took out the little box from her bag, the same cookies she’d baked that morning instead of getting some much-needed sleep.

"Alright, my sweethearts," she said, her voice warm and honey-sweet as she held out the box. "Two each, okay? Be gentle."

Vlad Jr. pouted at only getting two... but he still held out his elegant little hand for a cookie.

Drake bounced up and down on his toes, tail wagging so fast it slapped Luna’s leg.

Luna growled softly but took her cookies with her tiny wolf teeth showing.

Sable peeked up with big eyes, taking his cookies so delicately that his shadows curled around it protectively, like a sleepy blanket. Rocky squeaked a shy thank you and hugged his cookies to his cheek for a second before nibbling.

Felix just lifted his cookies in a lazy salute and took the biggest bite, smirking with crumbs on his lips. Kelpie’s damp fingers made his cookie a bit soggy, but he didn’t care, he just smiled at her like she’d handed him the moon.

Lucian took two and gave her a quiet thank you.

And Boo? Boo didn’t take his right away. He floated near the ceiling, spinning lazily like a baby balloon. He watched everyone giggling with cheeks full, cookie crumbs dusting their tiny uniforms. Only then did he drift down and hover in front of Alina’s desk, taking his cookies and nibbling on them while floating in the air.

Ring~ Ring~

When the breakfast bell rang through the hallway. One by one, the babies waddled out– Luna shifting into her tiny wolf form and trotting after Rocky, Drake bouncing so hard his tail almost tripped Kelpie, and Vlad Jr. dusted off his uniform as if crumbs offended his vampire pride.

Alina stood by the door, her hands resting on her hips, a tired but soft smile tugging at her lips. She watched them go, feeling that warm, sweet ache in her chest, they really were the cutest monsters she’d ever seen.

She walked back to her desk to grab her bag.

But she wasn’t surprised when she felt that telltale cold puff on her shoulder. She didn’t even have to look–Boo’s giggle gave him away.

She tilted her head, one eyebrow raised. "Boo. Gossip time?"

Boo floated upside down in front of her face, his wispy hair drifting like a ghostly halo. He grinned so wide his baby fangs peeked out. "Teacher, teacher — this one is soooo good."

Alina rested her elbow on her desk, chin in her palm, trying to look very serious. "Hmm. Better than the ninety-nine wives story?"

Boo tapped his chin, then leaned forward and whispered, "I heard Principal Nightshade... talks to his plants."

Alina blinked. "His... plants?"

Boo nodded hard. "Yes! The big, scary ones in his scary office. He goes, ’Grow faster or I’ll chop you into pieces’ — but then—" Boo slapped his ghost cheeks for effect — "he pats them on the leaves! Like, ’Good boy, grow big for Daddy.’"

Alina nearly choked on her own laugh. "What?! He talks to them like pets?"

Boo did a little spin, giggling so hard he hiccupped bubbles. "Yes! He says ’You’re the only one who listens to me.’ And then he mumbles about how everyone are annoying but his plants never talk back."

Alina clamped her hand over her mouth, her shoulders shaking. Oh goodness — if Dante only knew what Boo was saying about him...

"And Teacher," Boo added, drifting closer to boop her nose, "when you go to his office? Look for the little plant behind his desk. It’s the favorite. He gave it a name."

Alina’s eyes lit up with amusement, and she widened them just to make him feel happy. "A name? Boo — what’s the name?!" fre.eweb novel\.c om

Boo leaned in close, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Mr. Spike."

"Mr. Spike?!"

Boo spun away, giggling like a mischievous bell. "Yup! Don’t tell him I told you or he’ll lock me in the darkest drawer. Byeee Teacher!" He blew her a loud kiss and drifted straight through the wall, leaving Alina gasping, giggling, and covering her red face.

She pressed her palm to her chest, half-wheezing from laughing too hard. Oh my goodness, she thought. My terrifying boss talks to his plant named Mr. Spike...

Though Boo’s silly gossip about Mr. Spike had nearly made Alina burst out laughing in the hallway, she shook her head, muttering to herself, It’s just Boo’s imagination... right? A scary demon principal talking to his plants? Still, she couldn’t stop the tiny giggle that kept tickling her throat.

Trying to focus, she walked toward the staff room but just as she was about to slip inside, a passing assistant called her name. "Miss Hart! Principal Nightshade has called you to his office."

Oh, of course he did... she thought, her heart sinking straight to her toes. She took a deep breath, fixed her uniform, and pushed the door open carefully.

Inside, the air felt thicker, colder like a hush of shadows wrapped the whole room. Dante Nightshade stood behind his large dark desk, the morning light slanting through the tall windows, catching on his broad shoulders and the faint glow of his elegant, curved demon horns.

He was looking down at some files, his chiseled jaw tight, his deep voice rolling out, "Miss Hart—" But Alina didn’t hear the rest.

Because her eyes had already darted past him.

There it was. A big, potted plant in the corner behind his desk — a thorny-looking thing with spiky green leaves fanning out.

Mr. Spike, Boo had called it.

Alina’s lips twitched so hard she had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep a straight face. Boo, you little liar. Or— wait, maybe you’re not...?

"Miss Hart!" Dante’s voice sliced through her thoughts like a blade of ice.

She jolted. "Huh?!"
