Chapter 54: Chapter 54 Teacher... shadows like you
Alina’s eyes drifted toward the quietest corner, where a tiny shadow seemed to hug the legs of one chair.
Sable.
He was so small, almost hidden in the way his dark hair fell over his big eyes. His little hands played with the edge of his uniform sleeve, tugging at the fabric like it might hide him forever. The soft shadows that always seemed to follow him curled gently around his feet, like a blanket made of dusk.
"Sable," Alina called softly, her voice as warm as candlelight. "Would you like to share next, sweetheart?"
Sable’s big dark eyes peeked up. For a second, he didn’t move at all, just blinked, his shadow flicking nervously around his ankles. But when he saw Alina’s gentle smile and the tiny nod from Rocky, who peeked out from behind his desk to encourage him — he swallowed and slowly, slowly stood up.
His feet made no sound at all on the floor. He padded into the open space, so quiet you could almost hear Boo holding his breath.
Drake leaned forward so far he nearly toppled off his chair. "He’s gonna disappear again, I bet—"
"Hush," Luna snapped softly, in angry tone.
Sable shifted his tiny feet, hugging his hands to his chest. "M-my name... is Sable..." he whispered, his voice so soft it felt like dusk itself. "I’m... a shadow demon."
Alina’s chest squeezed, warmth flooding her heart. She nodded encouragingly, lowering herself to his level. "So brave, sweetheart. Can you show Teacher and your friends what your shadows can do?"
Sable peeked at her, his lips pressing together before they curved into the shyest, tiniest smile~~ one he only ever showed her.
He closed his eyes. Around his feet, the shadows thickened, like midnight ink swirling in the afternoon sun. They danced around his tiny shoes, curled up the edges of his sleeves, and in a blink — pop! — Sable’s small body vanished completely into the pool of shadows.
Rocky’s eyes went huge. Boo squeaked, "Where’d he go?" spinning in a circle, trying to spot him.
Drake whispered, "Did he turn into darkness?"
Even Vlad Jr. tilted his chin, faintly impressed.
Then, with a soft rustle, the shadows under Alina’s own chair shivered and out peeked a tiny head. Sable’s big dark eyes blinked up at her, his baby horns poking out of his fluffy hair. He was hugging the leg of her chair like a sleepy kitten made of dusk.
"Oh sweetheart!" Alina giggled, her hand pressed to her heart. She reached down, brushing his soft hair back, her fingers passing through the faintest wisp of darkness. "So clever. Such a gentle shadow."
Sable’s cheeks warmed pink, his tiny mouth curling into a shy, proud smile. He whispered something so soft only Alina could hear: "Teacher... shadows like you."
Alina nearly melted right there on the floor. She scooped him into a soft hug, feeling the tiny swirl of shadows tickle her arms like a soft breeze. "Teacher likes you too, sweetheart. You’re amazing."
Sable squeaked a tiny laugh, then slipped free of her arms, scampering back to his desk. His shadows followed him like little sleepy clouds, settling at his feet once he sat.
When Sable slipped back into his seat, the classroom felt like it was glowing with warmth, each one sitting straighter, feeling proud of their tiny show of magic. Alina’s heart was still fluttering when her eyes drifted toward the Lucian.
Unlike the others, he hadn’t bounced or squeaked or even blinked during the whole time. He just sat there back perfectly straight, tiny hands folded on top of his desk, red eyes cool and calm, a little frown sitting on his delicate brows as if he were judging everyone with a seriousness far too big for his tiny body.
Alina felt a soft laugh bubble in her chest. She stepped closer, her voice gentle but teasing. "Lucian? Sweetheart? Would you like to share next?"
Lucian’s eyes flicked up at her, crimson and so deep they almost looked black under the light. He blinked once, then shifted in his seat, his tiny shoulders stiff, like a little grown-up. He didn’t huff like Luna or puff his chest like Drake. He simply stood, straightened his tie with his baby fingers, and walked forward with that quiet Nightshade grace.
The whole class fell silent. Even Boo hovered closer, eyes big. Drake’s tail flicked, and Felix’s fox ears twitched curiously. This was the principal’s son, after all.
His chin tilted just enough to look like he was scolding them all without saying a word. He cleared his throat–so tiny, so serious and spoke, his baby voice so calm and cold that Alina had to bite back a smile.
"My name is Lucian Nightshade," he said, each word crisp and clear like a tiny prince giving a royal decree. "I am half-demon."
He paused, eyes sweeping over the circle like he was inspecting them. Then he lifted one small hand, showing the faintest shimmer of dark energy curling around his fingertips... it looked like mist, but darker, heavier, like a tiny piece of midnight. It twined up his wrist, flickering like a flame made of shadows.
Rocky squeaked, hugging the edge of his desk. Kelpie peeked out from behind his hair, fascinated. Sable leaned forward, eyes big and round like two polished stones.
Lucian lowered his hand slowly, the dark mist fading. "I have power over shadows... but not like Sable. Mine are different. Stronger. They listen to me."
Alina knelt down, her eyes warm as she looked up at him. "And do you always use them carefully, sweetheart?"
Lucian’s tiny mouth twitched, "Yes. I never lose control." He said it so matter-of-factly that Boo snorted, whispering, "He’s a boss baby."
Drake rolled his eyes, mouthing So cool at Vlad Jr.
Lucian ignored them all. He stepped closer to Alina, his small hand brushing the hem of her sleeve–something he never did. "Teacher..." he said quietly, only for her to hear. "Did you like it?"
