Chapter 56: Chapter 56 Play time
"Miss Hart!" Dante’s voice sliced through her thoughts like a blade of ice.
She jolted. "Huh?!"
He lifted his head slowly, his crimson eyes narrowing at her. "I asked you what happened in your classroom. Or do you prefer to stand there gawking at my plant like an idiot?"
Alina’s ears burned red. She pressed her hands together, trying not to glance at Mr. Spike again. "S-sorry, Sir. Um... Yes — the, uh, incident. Well... Boo and Drake started fighting. They called each other’s flowers ugly and then Drake... um... accidentally used his fire. And Kelpie tried to help but you know, water everywhere..." She trailed off, her voice small.
Dante sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He looked like a devil carved out of marble– so perfect, so cold, so terrifying. And somewhere in Alina’s mind, Boo’s voice whispered: Grow big for Daddy, Mr. Spike!
She almost snorted, but caught herself just in time.
He lowered his hand, glaring at her. "And do you know how to prevent such carelessness next time?"
Alina’s throat tightened for half a second but then she exhaled, her shoulders softening. She clasped her hands gently in front of her and lifted her chin, her hazel eyes steady on his.
"They’re just children, Sir," she said softly but firmly. "Even if they’re supernatural, they’re still little ones. They fight, they play rough, they make mistakes — that’s how they learn. I’ll watch them better. I’ll guide them better. But they’re still learning... and so am I."
Her words settled into the room, quiet but true. And for just a heartbeat, his glare faltered, not gone but softer, like he was weighing her words instead of dismissing them.
He didn’t praise her, of course. He just tapped his desk once, almost thoughtfully, before looking away.
"Good. Then do better."
"And don’t forget about the meeting after your classes," he said, voice low and dark. "We will discuss this in detail. Am I clear?"
Alina swallowed so hard it made a tiny squeak. "C-clear, Sir."
He flicked his hand dismissively, eyes already back on his papers. "Then go."
Alina dipped her head. She turned to leave, but her eyes couldn’t help sliding back to that thorny pot of green in the corner.
Mr. Spike, she thought, fighting the wild giggle in her chest as she hurried out the door, I hope he didn’t scold you too...
After breakfast, it was time for play. Alina gently gathered everyone and led them out into the garden.
The air was fresh and cool, the thick trees casting dappled shadows over the soft grass. Flowers in every shade dotted the edges, swaying gently like they were listening to the laughter about to fill the space. A faint breeze carried the scent of forest and morning dew.
Alina found her favorite spot, a simple wooden bench beneath an old oak. She sat down, folding her hands in her lap, her eyes twinkling as she watched her babies scatter across the garden.
Luna, of course, was the first to bolt. In her tiny wolf form, she dashed in happy, wild circles, her silver-gray fur gleaming in the sunlight. Her small paws kicked up tufts of grass as she ran lap after lap, her little tail flicking like a fluffy flag. Every so often she’d stop, look back at Alina with her bright eyes, then run even faster — just to show off how quick she was.
Drake tried to catch her once, but gave up halfway, flopping onto the grass and giggling when Luna zipped past again like a little storm cloud on legs. Boo drifted lazily after them, pretending to float along like a spooky balloon, sometimes poking Luna’s tail with a giggle just to annoy her.
Rocky sat by the flower patch, arranging tiny pebbles in neat rows, his round cheeks pink from the morning sun. Kelpie dipped his fingers into the small fountain nearby, giggling when the water danced around his hands. Felix lounged under the shade of a bush, tail flicking as he watched the others with sly eyes.
Sable curled in a shady patch of grass, shadows swirling like sleepy kittens around him, content to simply watch and listen.
Lucian, of course, sat on the garden steps, legs crossed, arms folded like a tiny demon lord surveying his territory. But every so often, Alina caught him peeking at the flowers... just a little, like he didn’t want anyone to see he liked them.
While Luna kept zipping around the garden like a tiny silver rocket and Drake was busy pretending he was king of the playground, Boo found himself floating lazily above everyone’s heads, arms folded behind his ghostly head, pout on his round little face.
"Booooored..." he muttered to himself, his small voice echoing just a little. He drifted lower, scanning the garden for something, anything fun to do. That’s when he spotted Rocky, sitting all alone by the flower patch.
Rocky was hunched over, round cheeks flushed pink as he arranged his precious little pebbles into neat, careful rows. He’d even lined them up by size — smallest to biggest with his tiny hands moving so carefully you’d think the pebbles were made of glass.
Boo drifted closer, his misty tail swirling behind him. "What’re you doing?" he asked, his upside-down face appearing right in front of Rocky’s nose.
Rocky squeaked, nearly dropping his biggest pebble. He looked up shyly, peeking out from under his fluffy hair. "Um... p-playing with pebbles," he mumbled, his voice as soft as a feather. He hugged one of the bigger stones to his chest like it was a treasure.
Boo made a dramatic hmph. "That’s boring!" he declared. But when Rocky’s round eyes went wide and watery, Boo wobbled in the air, suddenly feeling bad. He floated lower, chin resting on his ghostly hands. "Can I play too?" he added quickly.
Rocky’s whole face brightened, his tiny shoulders relaxing. "O-okay..." he said, his voice so quiet it made Boo smile.
Boo flopped next to him or rather, floated right beside the pebbles like a lazy balloon. He poked one with a ghost finger, watching it roll back into place. "So... what’s the game?"
Rocky’s cheeks turned pinker. "Um... lining them up... b-by size," he explained seriously. "And by colors too."
