Chapter 101: Chapter 101 I can’t let that happen
She paused.
"...Then I will also take leave," she muttered with a huff, trying not to let the nervous energy in her chest leak into her tone. "Because I respect you both. Even though I’m not scared at all!"
On the other end, there was a moment of silence. Vlad Jr. didn’t answer right away.
Was he going to say, "Okay, let’s go"?
She waited for him to say no. Even though she was scared, she didn’t want him to know.
"No, Luna," Vlad Jr. said firmly. "There’s not just one worm. There are many. Otherwise the kindergarten wouldn’t have been closed."
Her ears twitched sharply. That single sentence made something flip in her belly.
"So we are in actual danger?" she whispered, her voice dropping to a hushed breath, like she was afraid the worms might somehow hear.
"Very," Vlad Jr. confirmed, sounding exactly like a tiny military commander who knew more than he let on.
Luna narrowed her eyes. Her lips pressed into a thin line, and after a beat, she growled under her breath. "...Fine. But when I come back, I’m biting at least one!"
"Understood," Vlad Jr. replied without hesitation, like a fellow soldier acknowledging orders.
There was a pause—long and heavy. Neither of them said anything for a while.
Then, in a voice a little quieter than before, he cleared his throat. "Bye, Luna."
The call disconnected with a soft click, and Luna was left holding the phone against her small chest, the faint heat of the screen warming her skin through her cute pyjama shirt. She stared down at it for a second before letting out a stubborn grumble.
"I wasn’t scared," she muttered to herself, setting the phone aside, her nose wrinkling. "I was just... being strategic. Smart wolves don’t throw themselves into danger like fools."
She puffed out her cheeks and crossed her arms as she leaned back into her pillow, the soft fabric sinking beneath her. Her gaze lifted to the ceiling above, eyes tracing the faint shapes in the paint that looked like little clouds or maybe wolves running through snow.
"If those worm things ever come near us," she added under her breath, "I’ll bite them so hard they’ll cry for their slimy little mommies."
She rolled onto her side, trying to relax, but her brain was still turning.
And then, suddenly—another thought popped into her head like a cold splash of water.
"What about Rocky?"
Her brows twitched down, and she made a face like she’d tasted something sour. Rocky, that little guy, was terrified of literally everything. He’d turn into a rock just from hearing thunder. What if he went to kindergarten tomorrow and the worm monsters came crawling in? And he had already turned to stone?
Her stomach turned.
"What if... the worms slithered over his rocky surface?" she whispered in horror.
"Ugh!" she groaned, sitting up straight and shaking her head as if to get the image out. "That’s too disgusting. I can’t let that happen."
With no hesitation, she grabbed the phone again, her dad’s big device felt too large in her small hands, but she held it like a mission. She swiped through the contact list, determined to find Rocky’s number and warn him.
But as her eyes scanned the names, her little brows scrunched tighter.
There was no Rocky.
She blinked. Scrolled up. Scrolled down. Nothing.
Count Vladimir? Yes. Dad’s Beta? Yep. Even the Toad Prince from that weird cousin’s birthday party.
But not Rocky.
She clicked her tongue in frustration, tapping the phone against her palm as if that would magically make the contact appear. "Seriously? No Rocky?"
Then her eyes froze on one name glowing softly on the screen:
King of Tides Corvus.
"Hmph." Her lips curled slightly. "That must be Kelpie’s dad." She had heard that Kelpie’s dad was the King of Tides.
Without another second of hesitation, she tapped the call button.
***
Deep under the shimmering layers of the ocean, in the quiet blue halls of the Tide Court, King Corvus was pacing the floor of his coral-draped war room.
Around him stood a group of mermen, serious expressions on their faces as they held bundles of half-eaten seaweed that glowed faintly under the water’s light.
"Someone’s stealing our medicinal seaweeds again," his voice rumbled, "Search the borders. It must be—"
A buzzing noise interrupted him. His waterproof phone lit up with a soft pulse. The king frowned slightly. He disliked these strange devices, always preferred telepathy or scrolls, but these were necessary now to stay connected with other races.
He glanced down at the screen.
Incoming Call – Alpha Ryker’s House
He picked it up, expecting a formal discussion about treaties or bussiness agreements.
"Hello," he answered, sharp and formal, his voice lined with authority.
But the voice that came through was anything but formal.
"Hello! Luna speaking!" said a bright, cheerful tone, innocent and lively.
The king blinked, taken off guard.
Little Luna? Alpha Ryker’s daughter? Calling him... personally?
He straightened, his serious face softening into something gentler. His voice lost all sharpness.
"Luna? To what do I owe this call?" he asked, surprised and curious.
"It’s about Kelpie. Can I talk to him, please?" she asked sweetly.
The king’s brows lifted in surprise. Kelpie?
A small smile pulled at the corners of his mouth, rare and full of warmth. Well now. This was certainly interesting.
He turned immediately to a nearby guard and handed him the device. "Deliver this to the little prince. Now. He has an important call," he instructed with quiet excitement.
Not long after, in a quiet clearing near the coral beds, Kelpie was underwater, playing with jellyfish, tracing circles of light with his fingertips. His Blue hair curled and floated around him like soft strands of seaweed.
A guard approached and handed him the phone. Kelpie blinked in confusion, hands still damp.
"H-Hello?" he asked softly, the phone pressed awkwardly to his ear.
"Kelpie!" Luna’s voice came clearly. Her tone had returned to its usual bossy yet familiar vibe.
Kelpie flinched. "Luna?? You... called me?" he asked, wide-eyed.
Luna never called him. She only scolded or ignored him most of the time. She had once declared that he was too soft and squishy to be trusted in a real pack.
"Yes, yes. I just talked to Vlad Jr. Remember how we were sent home early yesterday? It’s because the kindergarten was actually attacked by worm monsters!" she said, her voice tight with drama and seriousness.
Kelpie’s pale face turned even whiter. His eyes grew wide, and his damp fingers clutched the phone tightly, as if it might slip away at any moment.
"W-Worms...?"
