I Am Tired Of Being A Hero
Chapter 95: Harvesting Corn

Chapter 95: Harvesting Corn

The two of them headed to the farm through the kitchen door. The rows and rows of corn made a small field, each stalk was tall and adorned with plump ears of corn ready for harvesting.

He broke off one of the corn and lowered the outer green leaves, the corn was fully exposed, revealing full and round kernels of golden and yellow hues, one look and one could tell that it was going to be very delicious.

Ravi bent down and picked several stones before he began to transform them, first into a pair of gloves which he gave to Asher, and then two baskets and a sharp knife.

"What is it?" Ravi asked Asher who was playing a game of look at the corn field and then look at him.

The child looked hesitant but still asked, "Are we going to sell them?"

Ravi had once thought of it and shook his head, "No, people don’t buy things from Harlem."

That look again.

"Just ask, if I can, I would answer. If I can’t, I will tell you. Looking all hesitant is distracting me." He grasped a ripe ear of corn, pulling it downwards and then snapping off the stalk before throwing it to Asher who hurried to catch it with both hands.

Was it a football? Ravi wanted to laugh.

Asher put the corn carefully into the basket and asked, "Why won’t people buy things from Harlem?"

"Because a Nest erupted here so they think it is cursed."

The moment Asher heard Nest, he looked left and right before moving closer to Ravi. Ravi could not control his laughter this time and laughed, causing the young teenager’s ears to turn red in embarrassment.

"I am not scared of Nests."

"Sure." Ravi said, his knife slicing through husks and throwing the corn to the child who caught it easily this time.

The child was right, the cornfield always grew bigger and larger than he wanted. It had a very high yield, Ravi could not possibly finish them all, he would eat what he could, and the rest, well, he would send them to the Davenport Orphanage on the outskirts of town.

Asher thought for so long before his eyes brightened, "I can do it."

"Do what?" Ravi asked, looking back at him. He was so thin, what did he think he could do?

"Sell it." Asher wanted to prove his use any way that he could, he could not continue to stay here for free, "Nobody knows I live in Harlem so I can sell them."

Ravi paused and looked at him.

Asher swallowed, "I...I would not run away with the money, I swear."

Ravi raised an eyebrow, "I did not think that you would do that. Ah! I forgot." He instantly vanished, his atoms rearranging back in his spot a few seconds later, he passed a bill to Asher.

Asher whose heart had been pounding when Ravi disappeared, looked at the money, confused, he reached out and collected it. Does Ravi want him to buy something for him when he goes to sell the corn?

Ravi smiled, he recalled he had watched parents do this back when he was younger, "That is your pocket money for the week and for doing chores." To think he would say this one day.

Asher shook his head, and passed back the money, "I.. I can not take your money." He already had so much to repay him for, how could he take money?

Ravi raised his brows, "Do you think it is so small?"

Asher shook his head so much that Ravi had to reach and hold his head, he was genuinely scared that it might fall out.

"Okay. Okay. Stop shaking your head. Take the money, I am the one giving it to you."

Asher heard the commanding voice and his body trembled against his wish. He put the money in his pocket, he would keep it and return it to Ravi when he did not want him anymore.

Ravi smiled and patted, "And why I think you selling the corn is a beautiful idea, it is also a crime. There are laws called child labor laws."

"Child labor laws?"

"Yes, I would buy a book for you to read about it when I get home. I would also buy some other things for you. On the weekend, we can go and shop for the remaining." The child had a good point though, he needed to earn more money. Can a police officer’s salary raise a child? But he did not even have a college certificate, his high school diploma was even fake. What to do?

Rob a bank?

Of course not.

"Shopping? I don’t need..."He paused at the look Ravi gave him and whispered a soft thank you.

They worked very fast and in thirty minutes, the two baskets were already filled with corn.

"I would carry them into the kitchen."

Ravi looked at those thin arms, would he not just fall when carrying the basket?

"No. We would spread them in the sun and then park them in the shed."

"Shed?"

Ravi blushed, he had transformed the wood to make an even better patio for himself to rest and paint. There was still wood remaining.

He touched a stone and it began to transform, the stone grew larger, and its rough edges softened, giving way to sleek curves and intricate metal details. In less than a second, a cart stood in front of them.

Ravi smiled and lifted the basket into the cart.

Asher looked at him and then looked at the cart in awe.

"Well, what are you waiting for, push it?"

The teenager placed his hand on the cart and pushed it, the cart moved, he pushed it even faster, running after and his face broke into a huge smile.

Ravi smiled in turn, he recalled that he had also loved this when he was small, they would play rock, paper, scissors, fighting for who would have the luck to push the cart after the sister.

Asher drove the cart through the corner to the front of the house. He placed the cart next to the chairs, a look of reluctance on his face.

"You can play with it all you want." As he was still speaking, the gate creaked open.

Was it Lana or Malik? Ravi turned and his entire body froze.
