Chapter 93: The one where Ravi is tipsy, not DRUNK
Ravi blinked twice. Just now, he had seen two Malik staring at him. He looked at the table and saw bottles staring at him, the tray of grilled fish had already been plucked clean by him, leaving behind bones.
"One, two, three..."
"What are you doing?" Malik said, his voice still calm and gentle even though there were more than four bottles of soju in front of him. He had said that he did not like rice wine but had ordered soju instead.
"Counting how many bottles that I drank?"
"Five."
"This is all your fault." Ravi grumbled as he rubbed his forehead. Somewhere along the line, Malik started pouring wine for him the moment his bowl was empty.
Refilling it over and over again. Ravi came from a culture that dictated one to drink when another person poured wine for him. Normally, he would not care but thinking that he would take advantage of this person without giving him any money, he drank the wine happily. Plus it was good wine. He rubbed his forehead.
Malik drank down his last bottle but there was no redness in his cheek like Ravi’s, his green eyes were clear, very clear like he was not drinking wine but water, "Ah! Sorry. I wanted to check something."
"Something. So, did you check it?"
"Yes, it was another failed attempt. Who knew you would be so stubborn even when drunk."
What rubbish was he talking about now? "I am not drunk. I am just tipsy. My mind is a little blurry but I am not drunk." He did not trust this person enough to be drunk in front of him and Ravi knew how he was when he was drunk.
After Luxor, he had drowned himself in so much wine, he could not tell reality from fantasy. It would be as if he was being swallowed by the flow of the river, sinking and hearing nothing but thundering water. The scariest thing was that he had no desire to struggle, he just wanted the water to carry him to wherever he wished.
He liked wine, but he did not like being drunk. He preferred it like this, to tether at the edge of tipsiness, aware and yet blurred.
Malik smiled and paused, the emotion wafting from the person in front of him for a second causing him to shiver. It was the kind of sadness that he had never felt before, a deep anguish and pain. Malik felt as if his heart was aching, it was as if a thistle was taking root in his heart, sprouting, and then cruelty ripped out to leave a gap so large that it could never truly heal.
It was for a second before the emotion was hidden from his touch. He felt the person in front of him, what had this person gone through, how can one so young have so much pain? This kind of pain, can you get it in a short lifetime?
His fingers still trembled at the intensity of it. Oh! How he wanted to feel more but he was not sure if he could bear it for long. If Malik could not bear it, then the person, just how?
"Yes, you are not drunk."
"I am not."
"I agree with you. You know when I was in the Capital, I got lots of money to listen to their problems. Can you tell me what happened?"
Liar. If he really had money in the Capital, why would he be eyeing the little money that he had, "I told you that I am fine."
’Here, have some more wine."
"Trying to get me drunk would not work."
"I have no such intention, we would pay for the bottles, we might as well finish it."
Turns out that the two of them were both thrifty when it came to money. This person’s true form might have an entire river filled with precious jewels and here his incarnation was, counting every penny, the thought made Ravi chuckle as he let him fill his bowl.
He drank it down in three gulps and slammed the bowl on the table.
"I don’t like her."
Malik smiled, "Oh! A colleague."
"She is not my colleague, she just came today. She is a part-time forensic officer."
Malik felt like laughing, "Oh! Your Bureau must be very happy to have a forensic officer in this small town. Your Captain must be very happy."
Hearing about Arlen made Ravi grit his teeth and this time he poured the last drips of wine into the bowl himself, "He is happy. Bought her a fridge and a coffee maker." He gritted his teeth.
"She must be good at her job. Is she pretty? How old is she? If she is single then it might be good for them to have a relationship. It might get her to stay and would take some burden from your team."
Ravi lowered her head, yes, she was pretty and single and good at her job. When they left, they saw a blue Audi parked in front of the bureau that must belong to her. She must be rich as well, from a good family probably.
They would be a good match together.
Ravi’s stomach twisted even more in knots. He..he thinks he hates her.
"And your Captain, I have been hearing a lot about him."
"Really?"
"How he is young and handsome, that his family in the capital is rich. Many women and men in my college want to date him, they made a chart and more."
Date him. Date Arlen. He could imagine it, him smiling at other people, bringing them flowers, having sex with them, the thought of it made him...
The loud crack made him jolt and he looked to see that the bottle in his hand had been shattering.
"What happened?"
"Nothing." Ravi said and he looked at his hand. The shards popped off and the skin closed back but it was still so uncomfortable.
He looked at Malik, "No wonder you lost your job." What, ’it would feel better when you talk to me’, if his mood was at 30%, speaking to Malik lowered it to 10%.
Malik had already been tethering on the edge of laughter but the last words pushed him over the edge.
"Hahaha! You think so?"
