I Am Tired Of Being A Hero
Chapter 87: The new teamate

Chapter 87: The new teamate

"Good morning, Officer." A gentle voice greeted him.

Ravi paused and turned to look at the incarnation, "Good morning."

Who chose his clothes? Ravi suddenly thought as he took him in, ignoring the golden circle of his head, the long strawberry blonde coils were done in a low, messy bun.

He wore a light blue button-down shirt and v v-neck sweater that gave off a comfortable feel. The khaki trousers looked like they go on forever and a simple leather belt accentuated the look.

He looked very good this morning and blank green eyes stared at him.

"Good morning. I have a question."

"Ask away?" Malik said, there was a hint of amusement in his voice.

"How do you get dressed? No, scratch that, I meant, how food you choose your clothes when you can’t see."

Malik’s lips twitched, people were very sensitive to those with disabilities, they tried their best to make sure not to trigger them or carelessly mock them. The reasons vary from social norms to empathy.

This neighbor of his acted like he had not been inducted into the social sphere of this world and yet Malik can not diagnose him as someone with antisocial tendencies.

Interesting, he thought as he smiled at him. His mind was still like a fortress. To conquer a fortress, a head collision was not necessary, you could tunnel under. He wanted to know just what secrets were behind that fortress, what were his pains and his deepest, darkest desires, not the faint ones leaking out, like how he so much wanted to rush to work now.

"Sage helps me at times but I can use the voice application on my phone to order. Thank Heavens for technology." His tone was light and gentle, not at all angry with his question.

Thank Heavens? Ravi’s curiosity was spooked by that phrase. The true self of this incarnation next to him had a lot of identities, King Yama, the first of the Ten Kings, King of Qin, Judge of Humans, and the Brother of the Netherworld Emperor. What fewer people knew was that he had ruled the Netherworld for ten thousand years while Emperor Lysander was being punished in the lower realm for angering the Heavens and bringing them to the Netherworld.

King Yama had held it down. He had ruled so flawlessly that everyone venerated him from the depths of their hearts and yet when the Netherworld Emperor returned two hundred years ago with his husband and heirs, King Yama had stepped down without any complaint.

"Why?" Ravi had asked Alya then. This was power impossible for someone like him to even imagine. Why would he give up so easily?"

"Because it is useless for His Majesty to hold onto the position."

Was the Netherworld Emperor that strong?

Alya must have read the expression on his face because she explained, "You are thinking about it the wrong way. The Netherworld Emperor is not determined by strength but by the Dao of the Netherworld. The cultivation of the Nether Dao is the greatest. Only when your Nether Dao reaches the peak can you command the Seven Seas and control the Six paths of reincarnation. If not, the Netherworld would not bend to your will."

"Then King Yama Nether Dao cultivation is lower than the cultivation of the Netherworld Emperor."

Alya was quiet, "King Yama never cultivated the Nether Dao."

Ravi’s brow furrowed, "Then how?"

"I don’t know. Nobody knows how he controlled the Netherworld for ten thousand years."

And now the person from the legends was in front of him, well, a piece of the legend that has no memory of who he is.

Fuck! He is going to be late. His chest pounded faster as if there was something very very urgent.

"Mr..."

"We are neighbors, let’s be informal."

"Then Malik, about Asher, can we talk about it later? I need to get to work." He would rather after work when his entire mind can be focused on the discussion.

"After work, I have to go to the Bookstore to get some things."

"I will go with you." Ravi hurriedly said, "Okay?"

"Okay."

Malik watched the man rush out and the smile on his face disappeared. His emotion amplification ability worked extremely slowly on the man as well. But at least it worked.

His stay here would not be boring, he could tell. He hummed a tune as he walked slowly to his office."

***

Ravi hurried to the office and paused in front of the door. Just now, there had been..not an influence but something close.

Did he imagine it? It had been a while since he mentally cultivated. He should do that sooner than later. He got there by ten minutes after 8 but nobody noticed because they were extremely busy.

This is the second Arson case in less than a week and already five people are dead.

"But the Captain and the fire department arrived less than fifteen minutes before the Fire started, didn’t they?" He asked Lisa who nodded.

"They are still investigating how it happened and whether there is a possibility that it is a mutant." She bit her lips in worry. Everyone had been running up and down.

Unlike the first case when the Captain came, their town media house had already set camp in front of the Police Bureau, the Chief who never left his office was giving an interview in front of the police Bureau with Arlen and everybody was running up and down.

Ravi looked out of the window, was it possible but he looked even thinner than he had been yesterday?

He let out a sigh.

Being a police officer was really tough work, especially if you are like Arlen who really cared about the job. Any other person in his team would rush over to another job that offered better pay and smaller working houses.

Sarah had always thought about quitting because of her daughter, Lisa was more interested in being an influencer nowadays, Tom was looking to retire as a civil servant and get a huge pension, and Draco, well Draco liked the fast pace of the job.

As for him, ten more months for his mandatory service and he would find another cashier job if he could. Well, that had been his plan. Now, he was a little uncomfortable leaving Arlen here alone.

Did he even sleep last night? Has he eaten? Ravi’s heart was filled with worry

He continued to review Websites and gather information from social media about the victim. In this attack, there had been no survivors. The father-in-law, the husband, and the wife had all died in the fire.

It was terrible.

Ten minutes later, Arlen entered the office with the Police Chief. The middle-aged man had a lot of things to say and spent more than ten minutes advising them before ending it up with, "The entire town is watching, let us do our best and bring this person to justice before they harm another person."

"Yes, Chief!"

The moment he left Arlen stood in front of the group, "The chief has exempted us from all the ongoing investigation and asked that we focus on the Arson case. We would be cooperating with the fire department and we would also ask help from other teams if we need it. During these coming days, it would be very stressful and we would be stretched thin, running up and down but we have to catch who is setting this fire and protect the citizens of Davenport. In order to help for the upcoming days, I brought something I am sure everyone would like."

Voom!’

Draco sped up before returning, carrying a very heavy brown carton. Arlen helped him leave it and place it on the table next to the water dispenser.

"I brought a very good and fast coffee machine."

Ravi lowered his head and tried to endure it but he burst out laughing, Lisa soon followed and the rest of the office laughed for a good 30 seconds. The gloominess that had been present ever since yesterday night seemed to have vanished slightly.

"Captain, you are the best!" Lisa said as she ran over to snap some pictures.

"And after we bring the arsonist to justice, the Chief has promised the team a day holiday and a beautiful dinner with his card." Arlen added.

Everyone else glowed even more fervently at his words and he smiled.

At that moment, the door opened and a young woman walked in. She looked to be in her early thirties and had short black hair that fell over her face and piercing brown eyes. Her high cheekbones and strong jaws gave her a more androgynous look.

She glanced over at them, her cold features softening a bit when she saw Arlen.

Arlen saw her, "Good timing."

Ravi swallowed Arlen’s eyes when he looked at the woman and was extremely happy. It glowed as if he saw something he liked, Ravi could feel his stomach suddenly coiling into knots and he held onto the table.

Why was he so upset at the thought? That same possessiveness, he thought he had dealt with it but at this moment, it burned in his chest even more hot.
