I Am Tired Of Being A Hero -
Chapter 143: The Case
Chapter 143: The Case
Three days passed just like that. At home, very few things had changed, he still maintained bringing home an animal a day for Asher to try. Yesterday he had brought a very venomous spider from another country.
You can shape-shift into it, poison your attacker, and slip away but how could he have expected that Asher was scared of the spider? His entire face turned pale and he hurriedly ran behind him, forcing Ravi to put the spider in the cage.
One of the few things that had changed was that Lana was helping Asher with his small and large targets, it turns out that during the day they had gotten much closer and after getting her word that she would not perform any kind of experiment on his word, Asher just let it be.
Yesterday, Lana was over at their place and when she saw the spider, her eyes had glowed so much that Ravi just had to give it to her.
Sage had started following them to the library, a disgruntled expression on his face as he proceeded to list every reason studying would not benefit his future. Over and over and over again.
At this point, Ravi was almost about to agree with him, if anything that would get him out of complaining every day.
"He is an intelligent child but he has always had a problem with words and letters. The library has some audio textbooks so I asked him to check it out. He will be taking his college entrance exam soon." Malik’s gentle voice had sounded over the phone.
Ravi had rolled his eyes after hearing it. Malik had a conference in Baston, a town near Alstria, leaving Ravi with his two family brats.
Once he came back, Ravi had a lot of words for him.
At work, everyone was bordering on boredom but no one wanted to say anything to jinx it. The only crime Ravi had witnessed was the person who ran a red light. The protestors were just too peaceful, using social media and standing near the police station chanting quietly.
Occasionally, they would go to the premises but nothing else.
If there was any change, it was Arlen. The Captain had been more tense as the days went by. He was hiding something, Ravi knew and it hurt, hurt so terribly that he was not privy to the information.
It clearly spelled their status, they were just friends. Just friends.
"I am going out for lunch, do you want anything?" Lisa asked as she stood up. Ravi stopped glancing at Arlen’s office and turned to her.
"Noodles?" That was her go-to lunch meal.
Lisa shook her head, "I am richer now. If you call me big sister, I would even treat you to lunch." She grinned and looked at the handsome man sitting next to her who pretended that he could not even hear one word she was saying.
"Big sister." Someone suddenly said in front of her and She visibly froze.
"Who is your big sister? I am not. Please don’t call me."
Just before they could fight again, Arlen entered the office, that tense expression on his face was still visibly present, even more than usual.
"We have a case." His voice was oddly calm and strained. He was followed by a middle-aged woman, her eyes were red but she had a strong bearing.
"This is Mrs Taylor Russell. Her daughter had been missing since yesterday morning."
Sarah instantly stood up to lead the woman into the private room.
"It is a Missing Person Case? Should we contact the Missing Person Department at Alstria?" Tom asked.
The Davenport Police Bureau was a very small police station with just three teams and a recently acquired forensic doctor. Alstria was a much bigger city and had more than three police bureaus, the headquarters having more specific police departments like the Missing Persons Department.
Ravi half expected Arlen to refuse but he nodded, "Contact them. This is a high-risk missing person case." He reached out for Sarah’s laptop and connected it to the projection. You all might be familiar with the missing person. You can see her outside. This is Alexis Russell, she is nineteen years old and she goes to Davenport Community College She is the president of the Local Business Protection Organization and a board member of the EarthAid-Avalon branch."
On the projector, the image of a beautiful young woman soon appeared on the screen. She was wearing a light pink sundress and white sneakers, raising an "Eclipse is not welcome in Davenport’ Placard above her head. Her light brown hair was in a loose bun and sharp amber eyes stared through the projection screen.
"Oh no!" Draco said, hurrying to the window to look at the peaceful protesters, "She is the one who organized the protest right."
Arlen nodded his head, "A 7-day, no breakfast protest against the decision of the Eclipse corporation opening their branch here in Davenport."
Lisa gasped, "Is it possible that they..." She sneakily looked at the closed office door where the mother was before raising her thumb to slice through her neck.
"Let us not come to any conclusions. We need to find her as soon as possible before other protesters hear any news about this. This investigation would be quiet and quick. I am effecting a gag order on everyone, do not discuss this case outside with anyone or the press, even your partners, understand."
They all nodded.
"It has been a peaceful protest so far, we have to make sure it remains as one. Her father is coming over, Sergeant and Officer Brown, the two of you would be in charge of interviewing him. Officer West and Officer Johnson, the two of you should blend into the crowd of protesters, find more about her, go to her college, know her friends and those she has problems with."
"Is it possible that she just left, you know the stress of the protest maybe was too much."
"I do not think so." The expression on his face was oddly cold and calm, "But we would also investigate in that direction, let’s not leave any stone unturned."
