I Am Tired Of Being A Hero -
Chapter 142: Doughnuts
Chapter 142: Doughnuts
They went back to the doughnut store and got some more varieties of doughnuts before stopping for a cup of soy milk and heading back to their office.
8:20 a.m
They are officially late.
"We went on patrol." Arlen said smiling when he saw Ravi check his phone for the thirtieth time.
"Isn’t that lying?" Ravi said, the corner of his lips moving upwards.
"Not technically. We did a patrol on our way back."
Ravi chuckled at the mischievous smile on Arlen’s face, he looked at the crowd that was near the police bureau were still there. The girl was no longer giving the speech but she was standing with a group of people on the stage, carrying the placards up high.
He looked away and climbed the staircase.
"Ravi, let’s have a nice day at work today." Arlen said before opening the door, "Officer West, after you."
Ravi hesitated a bit, outside those doors, they were Arlen and Ravi, two friends but once he walked in, they would become Captain Sinclair and his subordinate, "Officer West." He sighed and walked through the door.
"Good morning, Captain!" Soon, the calls filled the office as everyone stepped on what they were doing, to smile and salute Arlen and he smiled back, greeting everyone in turn.
"Sergeant, Officer West is late, deduct. Deduct." Draco almost sang as he swerved in his chair, a huge grin on his face.
"He was with me." Arlen said, turning back to give Ravi a small wink. "Everyone did an incredible job last week. These are from the Chief as a way to keep up the good work." He placed the boxes of doughnuts next to the coffee table and soon headed into his office.
"Hello!" Lisa said as she leaned over to Ravi’s station. "So, the Captain..."
Ravi felt as if his tail had been stepped up and he sat upright, looking at her, "What about the Captain?"
Lisa looked at him and looked away for a second, "We have not spoken since Thursday. You know, since the day you jumped into a burning house to save him. You did not pick up my calls, you did not pick up anyone’s calls."
Ravi felt a hint of guilt, "I apologize for that. I was just... tired. I feel better now."
Lisa pouted, and looked in the direction of Arlen’s office before chuckling, "You have changed, partner."
Ravi had a tad more patience because of his guilt, "How so?" He asked as he opened the computer, clicking on files.
"Before, you would not have apologized."
Ravi’s fingers froze and he looked at her, "I wasn’t that bad."
Lisa’s eyebrow raised as a response to that statement without speaking.
It made Ravi chuckle and Lisa pointed at him.
"That. That too. Before you don’t laugh, Draco even said that you might be a serial killer masquerading as a police officer."
Ravi rolled his eyes, "And you listened to him. He exaggerates for a living. People change every day, Lisa. You don’t need to read much into it. How was your weekend?"
Lisa grinned and she tucked her hair behind her ears, on her ears was a delicate rose design made of sterling silver with a sparkling green gemstone in the center.
"It is pretty."
"Thank you, my boyfriend gave it to me."
Ravi widened his eyes, wasn’t it just last week that she had gone out on her face date with the man and now they were already in a relationship? His eyes could not help moving to Arlen’s office.
They have not even gone on a date together. There was a bitter feeling in his chest. Just one date together.
"Congrats."
Lisa beamed, "Thank you. He is the only person that I have dated who is very comfortable about me being a police officer. He enjoys me telling him about work."
Ravi raised an eyebrow, "Have you done a background check on him?"
Lisa rolled her eyes, "Do you take me for a fool? Already done. He is clean, no priors, not even a speeding ticket."
"Oh! Okay. What is his name, what does he do?"
"Ethan Kim, He is a visiting doctor, he works in Alstria and comes here to help. He is really the best person I have ever met and he likes me so much."
Ravi had a strange feeling but he did not want to dampen Lisa’s enthusiasm because of his own envy, "I am happy for you!"
"Thanks, Ravi." Talking about her boyfriend made her happy and she stopped pursuing the topic and stood up to help herself to the doughnut.
"Draco, how can you carry one whole box to yourself? It is called greed." She shouted, hurrying to Draco’s cubicle.
Ravi looked at his partner, it seemed like getting a boyfriend did nothing to change her office rivalry with Draco.
If he ever...he looked at Arlen who was concentrating on a tablet. He would change, he was not sure how, but he knew his whole world would change completely if he ever...He swallowed and looked back at the files.
"Oh, it is so good. Captain, where did you buy these?" It was Lisa who was running to Arlen’s office and after getting her information, ran back to where the box was. She did not get any for him, she knew he did not like doughnuts.
After making her coffee, she fetched a cup for him and sat down with a small box of doughnuts.
"You are not normal. They are so good. This one is called glazed doughnut and it is so sweet and so soft." She tore it apart, "See how light and fluffy, it is like a pillow."
"Enjoy your pillow." Ravi said and faced his work.
"Officer Adams, are you going outside?" Twenty minutes later, Lisa shouted from across the office, "Can you get something for me?"
"No. I am going to the Forensic lab."
Lisa pouted, "You are always running there. Don’t you like us anymore?"
"Perhaps if you remove yourself from this place, Officer Adams would be more inclined to stay."
"Draco! If you talk every ten minutes, would you self-combust?"
And like that, the two of them started arguing again. Sarah, who wanted to answer, gave up and walked through the corridors to the Forensic lab.
Ravi looked at Arlen’s office, only to see the Captain smirking mischievously at him. The two of them looked at each other and smiled.
It felt really good, their eyes and hearts sharing a secret only they knew.
