I Am Tired Of Being A Hero -
Chapter 133: The Diamond in Davenport
Chapter 133: The Diamond in Davenport
Arlen sat calmly as he gave the men and women a thorough do-over. They were dressed in light blue combat suits with the signal of an ocean blue cloud, his family crest on the chest area, mixed with the disdain in their eyes, it was very comical.
Very comical. Yes.
But it’s not worth it for him to come here so early. He had plans, he intended to make breakfast for Ravi and Asher.
Eggs and Pancakes.
His pancakes were amazing, that was what his roommates had always said and it is not possible that they all would be lying to him. He swallowed, although it had nothing, nothing on Ravi’s food.
Heaven, everything the man touches turns into paradise. A delicious, perfect paradise for the taste buds.
"Captain. Are you listening?" The chief of the bureau asked. He was one of the few who knew his identity in Davenport but not completely. To Chief Ambrose Pritchard, he was Sinclair from the capital, one of the branch families, the man had asked him so much about the main family that Arlen did not know how to keep up with his smile.
"Yes. The Kyanos was moved to a bank here, and you want to enlist the help of the officers under my care. Let me go ahead and refuse. Team 1 would not be participating in this charade. Thank you!"
"I think so too. I have read their files. The highest is this Captain here that is a Level 3 Weather Manipulation. Aurora, they would only get in our way." The tallest man among them said he had messy brown hair and green eyes. The mask on his face was molded perfectly, not allowing one to glean his true features.
Aurora seemed like the leader, she was the shortest and the strongest. She looked at Arlen calculating, "Chief, let me explain our situation. The Phantom posted on their page that they have their eye on The Kyanos. It was moved here, in the utmost secrecy, we were only sent because a high-profile superhero team disappearing from their post might have led the Phantom to Davenport. We are not much so we would need the help of the local police. Captain, your team would not be at risk. We are here, and we have the best defense tools protecting the diamond. There is a time limit on the Phantom Page and in one week, we would move the diamond back to the Georgiou mansion. We can not handle everything so we need to know we can count on your team. Is that okay?"
Arlen blinked and looked at the woman, she was 5 ’5 with short red hair and red eyes, "You do understand that the Phantom played tricks so you can move the diamond. It was much safer in the Georgiou mansion. If you ask me, it is best if you move it back there. This whole thing is only going to cost precious Davenport Lives." Arlen sighed, rubbing his forehead. The Georgiou family is not foolish, he hoped they were not counting on him to lift a hand to help because he would not.
"Well! We did not ask for your opinion, Captain. The Kyanos is a National Treasure, you are obliged to protect it." The third woman in the group said with a frown.
He rolled his eyes and stood up, "What national treasure. It belongs to a family."
"It brings more than a hundred thousand tourists to Avalon every year."
Arlen looked at them, it seemed like these heroes were a family guide or something, "And at least 70% of the money goes to the Georgiou family." He gave the look that he would give a foolish goat and the face of the tall guy turned so red that Arlen was sure that he wanted to attack him but he didn’t.
Arlen looked at the Chief, hoping that the words in his mind were stated clearly in his eyes. These people should carry their problems to another place.
The Chief looked away from Arlen pretending that he could not see him, "The Mayor had already called. Okay, we would do anything to help."
Arlen looked at him, not hiding his disappointment as he opened the door and left. Could he go back to Ravi’s? He made a huge mistake, he should have forgotten something, if he forgot something, he would have a reason to go back. He groaned at the thought of his foolishness.
Not five minutes after he left, he heard his name and he turned around to look at the group of four people, heroes. Just standing on the pavement, they attracted all sorts of attention. Even in this small town that did not have a Heroes Association, who did not know heroes, who did not want to take a picture of them.
He sighed and turned, "What is it?" He soon noticed that the expression of the four heroes had changed, they were standing upright, the way one did when they saw their immediate superior. His eyes narrowed and he turned around to see a man crossing the street, he had a calm temperament and his steps were measured.
When he saw Arlen, he let out a very soft sneer.
The group of heroes looked at their leader and then at Arlen. Nova was about to open his mouth to ask if their leader had met such an arrogant police officer before, his eyes widening as their leader straightened his combat suit, put his feet together, and stood upright, before paying a standard military salute to Arlen.
"Captain, hello."
Arlen chuckled, "Vega! It has been years."
Vega smiled. It had been eight years since he last saw this brat. When he had gone to serve his compulsory national military service, he had already been a hero for more than 2 years. He felt like it was beneath him.
On their first night as Special Team 7, this 18-year-old boy who they had looked down on all day, and bullied earlier in the day, had given them a beating. At night, he could still feel the pains at times. He had given them such a thorough beating and forced them to call him, ’Captain.’
He had initially taught that the runt of the team would run all the errands but it turns out, they would run all the errands by themselves and also run the errands of the runt. If you complain, he would ask for a spar and whether you want that or not, it was another round of beating. They could not use their abilities and Arlen’s combat strength was insane to them.
He, the hero, had been the one who could not take it anymore and had secretly gone to report to the Instructor, only for the Instructor to pretend that he could not hear him at all. It turns out that one of the little brat’s fathers was a General and he had been coming to the military since he was young.
That entire place was just his backyard.
Since he could not be his enemy, he had used the other technique to become closer to him, and in the two years of military training, he stuck to his side.
"Go back to the Hotel. I would like to meet you guys there."
Arlen watched the rest of the group go, "I was itching to give them a beating, why do they look so condensing."
Vega chuckled, "Because they are young and already have signed contracts with a family like the Georgiou, what many other heroes can not do. You have to understand, that not everybody is a Sinclair."
Arlen rolled his eyes and then looked at his old friend with a smile, "So you signed with Georgiou. Who said something about private heroes not having the title of heroes?"
Vega laughed, something flashing in his eyes, "I was young and foolish. I have a family. Georgiou pays well so I went with them. Come, Come, let me treat you to a meal."
Arlen looked at him for a second but still took him to a nice restaurant, "Why did you choose to come To Davenport?"
On their table were a few simple dishes such as radish kimchi, pickled onions, pickled cucumbers, red pepper sauce, two big bowls of beef soup, and two bowls of white rice.
Vega looked at the dishes in front of him, his spoon not touching any of them and he looked up at Arlen, "The tech we got from Sinclair Tech com, needs something called cosmic energy, they said it is in places where Nests erupted. Two Nests erupted in Davenport. They have a lot, the thing is safer here in Davenport than in the Georgiou mansion. I am here, Relax."
Arlen still had that off feeling but he smiled, he took out his phone to snap the food before he picked up his spoon and tasted the soup. He nodded at the taste.
Arlen took a spoonful of rice covered with the soup, and used his chopsticks to add some kimchi and cucumbers with the pickled onions on top. His eyes glowed as he said to Vega proudly, "It is best eaten like this. Why are you not eating, you don’t like it? We can ask the cook to make you something else. We are friends."
"Friends?" Vega chuckled, "I ate on the plane. Do not worry. Just enjoy the meal."
