I Am Tired Of Being A Hero -
Chapter 110: Aftermath
Chapter 110: Aftermath
"Arlen! Arlen!" Someone was calling him. "Arlen, I..." He struggled to hear what the person was saying but the words were muffled, like a candlelight in a windy room, gradually dying out.
Arlen slowly opened his eyes, there was a faint light in the corner but the rest of the lights were turned off. He still felt groggy and tried to sit up, but his right hand was connected to an IV bag, the medicine dropping down the tube one drop at a time.
The Memories of last night soon filled his head and his ears turned red in embarrassment. He had been so foolish. If his family ever heard how he handled yesterday night, they might just disown him. No strategy, no thought, the only thing on his mind was that he did not want the woman to die in front of him.
He rubbed his head, if he was more talented or could control his ability a little more, even half of what Anouk could, what was saving a woman from a burning house?
The woman. His team.
Arlen pulled the cannula out and quietly got out of the bed, he wore his slippers and made his way out of the door. A nurse pushing the cart saw him and her eyes widened.
"Mr Sinclair, what are you doing out of bed?"
Arlen smiled at her, "I just wanted to know the situation of the woman I came with. A Mrs. Black? The police brought her."
The woman thought for a while, "A healer came from Alstria, she is fine but she would need rest as you do, Mr. Sinclair, just because you did not sustain any injury, does not mean you need to rest. It is 3 am in the night."
Did not sustain any injury, he could recall the pain from the burns on his body, and the glass cups that exploded definitely pierced his back and his cheeks, and the door, the flaming door? No injury?
He frowned, that really did not sound right.
But at least the woman was alright, she could be tried and she could be sent to jail. The case was 30 years old, any evidence must have already been lost to time. He yawned and thanked the woman but the nurse did not let go, she followed him into the room and tucked the blanket.
"My phone. Did I come with my phone?" As much as he wanted to prove to his family that he was capable of surviving without their help, he might need a little help so that he could get justice for Ryan Warrow. Although he too would be going to jail, probably for life. The only person he could contact and the person who would keep it on the down low was his brother-in-law.
"Mister. Just sleep." The nurse said exasperated.
The following morning.
The sound of car horns and bells woke Arlen up and he slowly sat up. The room was filled with light and Arlen could finally see the flower baskets all over the room.
He turned to the left and saw Draco sleeping.
"Officer Brown. If you want to sleep..."
Draco opened his eyes and smiled widely. He jumped to his feet and opened the door, "The Captain is awake!" He shouted and soon the door was open wider for the rest of the team to enter inside.
The Sergeant, Officer Adams, Brown, and Johnson soon surrounded his bed.
"It is good that you are alright."
Arlen smiled and looked at the door.
"Officer West did not come. He took a sick day. He is not feeling fine." Tom, noticing his gaze, explained calmly.
"Oh!" Arlen could not help the disappointment that washed over him. Did he do something again? Was Ravi angry with him? The smile on his lips fell and he sighed.
"Ryan Warrow?"
"He is in Alstria. The Heroes Association Branch there." Draco explained.
"Can I speak freely?" Sarah said, her hair was in a loose bun and she wore a red and white dress. Arlen had never seen her without her uniform, she was quite pretty.
"Sure. Did anything happen?"
Sarah took a deep breath, "Captain, Was your brain replaced yesterday? How could you jump into a burning house without any protection?"
"I was trying to save..."
"Save? Are you a hero? You just have abilities, that do not make a hero, you don’t train, you don’t have gadgets, you don’t have any backup? Did something happen? What would your parents, your friends, your lover, us? Did you consider any of this before jumping into a fire? We are a team, how can you do something like that without consulting any of us, take a moment and think of what would have happened if you had died or If Ravi had not saved you."
Sarah Adams was the calmest police officer, she was gentle and kind, and among all his team, she was Arlen’s favorite officer to deal with complaints or anxious people. She always had a way of making them calm down.
He had never seen her like this, so angry, he didn’t even know she was capable of scolding someone so thoroughly.
He felt like lowering his head when he paused. Ravi. Ravi saved him, "Ravi saved me?"
They all nodded.
"He just ran into the building. He is also crazy, Officer Adams, you should also give me a premium scolding when he comes back to work." Lisa said looking at Sarah before looking back at Arlen, "It was actually like a movie. The Captain jumped in and he ran after you. We just thank heaven that it rained or we are not sure what would have happened to the two of you. We wanted to bring him to the hospital but he said that his ability had healed him completely and he just needed to rest."
Saved him?
Again?
Arlen recalled when Ravi had pressed him to the ground, burying his head and body completely and receiving the bullet that was meant for him. And now, he had saved him again, running into a burning building to save him.
He seemed to see those hazel eyes staring at him. Calm, complex, and with a thousand emotions that he could not decipher.
At this moment, Arlen felt fear.
****
"I have a game of cards to win. That little brat has already won six times and I have no intention of letting him win again." A youthful voice sounded in the room before a shimmering purple light appeared in the room and two people walked through.
The first person had red hair and gray eyes while the other person looked older, with blonde hair and the greenest eyes that shone like emeralds.
Sage looked around the room that was ten times more luxurious than the room where Arlen was being attended to. The lights were soft and filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
He headed to one of the seats and sat down, leaning down and making all sorts of postures, "It is even more comfortable than a hotel seat. How nice it must be to have money!"
On the large king-size bed lay a woman in her early seventies. She slept peacefully, her chest rising and falling in a good rhythm for her age.
Malik sat on the bed and tapped her, "Mrs Maia. Mrs Maia." His voice was gentle like always as he shook the woman up.
The woman opened her eyes and saw the two of them, she frowned and moved to sit up, "Who are you, people?"
"Businessmen." Sage shouted from the seat, he was sitting cross-legged on one of the plush chair arms and when he saw that the woman was looking at him, he gave her a wild grin.
The woman did not look frightened, "Leave before I call the police. I am not in the mood right now."
"Yes. You are in a bad mood. You feel humiliated, and embarrassed that you were attacked in your own home. Your guards could not even do a thing so you are angry. Oh! That means you do not know."
Her eyes narrowed, "I do not know what."
"That your son is dead. He was burnt alive, In the end, he smelt a bit like roasted lamb. Have you had roasted lamb before? It is quite delicious." The man’s voice was still as gentle as it had been when he woke her up.
The woman opened her mouth and then closed it, different expressions flashed on her face before she reached out to collect the phone right next to her to call security. She was a businesswoman and she would have not made it this far without having the ability to control her emotions
She picked up the phone and the moment she tried to speak, she could not.
Her pupils instantly contracted and the hairs on her back stood up. A sense of fear that seemed to come from the biological instinct was born in the depths of her soul and the blood in her body seemed to freeze in an instant, unable to flow due to intense terror.
Malik remained calm and his voice was still gentle, "I hope I have your attention now. You see, we are businessmen and we made a deal with someone. A Lucas Harrow, are you familiar with this name, Mrs Maia Black."
