Chapter 691: Chapter 687: Battle with the corpse beast _1
Upon seeing that the Mother-nest truly had no interest in them, the evolved creatures finally let their guard down. They began to ignore the Mother-nest and wander away, while a few decided to settle down on the body of the Mother-nest.Some parts of the Mother-nest’s body had naturally formed caves which provided ideal habitats for the evolved creatures. Some even fought over these desirable living spaces.
Tang Ye, who was on the back of the Mother-nest, found all this amusing. As he shifted his gaze, on the eastern side of the Mother-nest’s body, he saw countless tendrils intertwined with one another. Some burrowing into the ground, others wrapping around large, evolved trees.
The Mother-nest’s body quivered several times, startling the evolved creatures that had just settled down. They swiftly retreated, growling with cautious alarm at it.
At this moment, Tang Ye noticed that their surroundings began to change. He was unsure of the exact changes, but it seemed like the life energy from the area where the Mother-nest was now located was starting to fade away.
"I... I really like this place, Zombie King... Thank you~"
The Mother-nest sent Tang Ye a message of unfathomable meaning. Tang Ye furrowed his brow but was quickly distracted by the roar of zombies from below, causing the evolved creatures to once again get frightened.
In no time, zombies with grey skin, black blood veins, and eyes as white as snow charged out. They roared in excitement; they had finally spotted prey after a long time!
Many of the zombies had never seen real prey before. They emerged late and didn’t know what food looked like or tasted like. However, they could feel an overpowering hunger deep in their genes!
Those beasts! They’re our food!
The sight of the evolved creatures sent the zombies into a frenzy, crazed and bloodthirsty. They had been starving for so long that they had grown used to the feeling, or one might say they were born accustomed to hunger. But suddenly seeing food ignited such a strong desire that all they could think about were the beasts in front of them.
Eat them!
The madness drove the zombies, making them very fast. The evolved creatures were caught off guard. Even though they sensed an inexplicable killing intent from these strange creatures, they inexplicably felt a primal fear deep in their soul. It was the scent of a natural predator!
As if they were born to be the food of these monsters!
By the time the evolved creatures gathered their wits, the zombies charging out of the Mother-nest’s body had already jumped onto them and started to bite madly.
Blood splattered and a strong stench of blood filled the air.
Previously, the Mother-nest in Liang City concealed most of its body beneath the ground. But now, it found a new home and the parts of its body meant to be buried did not bury. As a result, the exit of the Mother-nest body was a few dozen meters off the ground.
The zombies were not many, but they should not be underestimated. Disregarding all terrains and driven by their hunger, they leaped out like a waterfall from a cliff.
Roar!
After ten odd seconds, a giant evolved creature finally reacted. It roared and led various other creatures to counterattack. Eventually, the evolved creatures and zombies were entangled in a bloody mess, their fights cruel and brutal, much like hell.
Around the same time, Tang Ye finally noticed that something was off. He noticed a tree wilting very slowly. So slowly, in fact, that those who were not carefully observing may not have noticed. After a long while, Tang Ye finally connected the dots.
It wasn’t just that tree. Other trees were also slowly losing their vitality, very, very slowly!
Tang Ye glanced once again at the fierce battle between the zombies and evolved creatures below. He shook his head, guessing that the Mother-nest drew its sustenance from the plants in the area, absorbing the nutrients it needed for survival. That’s probably why it had no interest in live creatures.
Just like how zombies, however vicious and hungry, would never think of devouring vibrant and green plants. They didn’t know if living plants were edible. Conversely, most of the zombified plants wouldn’t attack humans either. Of course, we’re leaving out some evolved plants. They would evolve to the point that they attack humans and other animals.
"This place will probably turn into a zombie paradise soon."
Tang Ye chuckled, speculating that given its terrifying propagation ability, it was a matter of time for the Mother-nest to take over the evolved forest. Furthermore, Tang Ye wasn’t sure if the reproduction speed of the Mother-nest had reached its peak. It most likely didn’t.
This was because Liang City no longer had any living plant in sight, devoid of any life, not even eligible for zombification. Theoretically, the resources that the Mother-nest could draw from Liang City had been thoroughly depleted. To conserve its energy, it might have decreased the production of its zombies.
If the Mother-nest had abundant resources, it wouldn’t be surprising if it mass-produced zombies!
Not long after, the trees in this vast forest would one after another wither away, losing their vitality and leaving only their dead trunks standing on the decaying soil. Surrounding them would be countless zombies!
Tang Ye could already imagine such a scenario!
The battle between the zombies and evolved creatures below had already reached a climax. Whether it was herbivores or carnivores, the evolved creatures all came forward to fight their mortal enemies, killing off one zombie after another. However, there were too few zombies in the Mother-nest after it moved.
In a short while, the zombies gushing out of the Mother-nest’s exit began to decrease. Gradually, it got to a point where only one zombie would jump out every minute or two, and many of them unluckily landed head first and died on the spot!
In that interval, Tang Ye saw some bizarre zombies that he hadn’t seen before. They looked terrifying but were quickly torn apart by high-level evolved creatures once they entered the battlefield. Their remains scattered everywhere.
This battle was a defeat for the zombies. Not only were they outnumbered, but the levels of the zombies were also low. Among the myriad of zombies, Tang Ye only saw two Level 1 zombies. One of them was torn into shreds by countless birds the moment it appeared.
Among these were silver-armored zombies created by the Mother-nest, which inherited Tang Ye’s ability to regenerate. They managed to survive in the battlefield for a few minutes due to their tough skin, but were later torn to pieces by a three-meter-long leopard.
However, these silver-armored zombies inherited an ability from Tang Ye - resurrection. After being killed, they revived once. Upon their second death, the silver skin began to fade into black, finally turning into a thin, black, human-shaped corpse.
The leopard didn’t have it easy either, as the silver-armored zombie inflicted three gashes on it - one behind the ear, one on the belly, and the last on its hind leg.
