Chapter 611: Chapter 609: Something’s Off That Wasn’t Detected_1
"Let’s split up and search."
As soon as they entered the four-story office building, the group discussed and agreed. None of them objected as splitting up meant whoever found the food first could sneak a snack.
After everyone nodded in agreement, a man with a tattooed face quickly ran up the stairs with a knife, carefully searching room by room on the second floor.
Parting from his companions, the surrounding air became much quieter, and the tattooed man became more alert.
Tap, tap, tap~
His footstep echoes heavily in the air, causing an oppressive feeling.
Squeak~
A dust-covered door was pushed open. As expected, there was nothing inside. The tattooed man was already ready for this outcome. After casually sweeping his eyes around, he exited the room.
The once quiet office building became lively with their arrival, there were rustling footsteps and voices upstairs and downstairs.
He faintly heard two people having a conversation on the first floor.
"Ah, if we find it, you can go first, I’ll follow."
"Of course."
"What about Brother Gao?"
"Nothing, if he can’t find it, he’ll simply join the game."
"Right, right, right, I don’t want to cause trouble."
"Look at you, you haven’t seen a woman in eight generations. Trust me, if there’s meat for me to eat, there’ll be soup for you to drink."
"Right, right."
Seems like the two were discussing allying themselves. It wasn’t hard for the tattooed man to guess that a Level 3 New Human knew that they couldn’t defeat a Level 4 Spider Zombie on their own, so they sought an alliance with a Level 4 New Human. Not only will this increase their chances of finding food, but it also meant they would get a more substantial portion.
Truthfully, the girl carried by the spider was quite stunning—something rare in this world.
Before or at the beginning of the Apocalypse, such pretty girls were not uncommon. However, as the apocalypse went on, many were turned into playthings. After being used for a while, they lost the luster they had before the Apocalypse.
Just the women alone could make them forget all their worries. What more of a girl who still retained her beauty from before the Apocalypse?
These "bandits" seemed to be hunting the Level 4 Zombie, but in reality, they were starving wolves hungrily eyeing their prey.
Rustle ~
Listening to the sounds upstairs and downstairs, the tattooed man emerged from the room and went to the central office area in the corridor to continue his search. This time, he took note of the thick layer of dust inside. No matter where the spider was hiding, there would be traces of dust being swiped away, which could be used to find his target.
Noting this, the tattooed man stopped his detailed search and instead started looking for places where the dust had been disturbed.
Squeak~
Rustle ~
As doors opened and closed, the tattooed man wiped the dust off his head. He had pretty much checked the entire second floor and couldn’t find any traces of the spider. His companions didn’t relay any information either, or perhaps one of them had already found the target but kept it to themselves so that they could snuck a snack.
At this moment, the faint noise from the first floor gradually disappeared. The tattooed man didn’t pay much attention. Just as he was about to give up on the second floor, he suddenly noticed a spider web at the entrance of the office right in front of him.
"Did I see wrong? Was this there just now?"
He squinted and walked over, unsure if he had seen this spider web. But regardless, he thought he might as well check it out since it wouldn’t take much time.
As he arrived at the spider web and looked upward, he noticed each interconnected thread had a little dew drop on it. This spider web seemed quite fresh.
As the tattooed man reached out to touch it, a voice suddenly interrupted him from behind.
"Hey, Old Bei."
A figure suddenly appeared in the corridor diagonally across. It was the tattooed man’s companion. Old Bei is the nickname that the tattooed man was known by within the group.
"What is it?"
He squinted at his companion, unsure of what he wanted.
"Did you find it?"
Old Bei shook his head but smirked inwardly. His companion was merely worried that he had been outpaced and didn’t truly intend to help at all.
Asking for information wouldn’t hurt.
The companion showed no sign of disappointment. Old Bei guessed correctly. His question was simply probing, or perhaps it had no hidden meaning and was just a straightforward question.
"Oh, I’m going up first then."
The companion gestured at Old Bei and headed toward the stairwell behind him. With Old Bei here, he figured that the entire second floor must have been searched. If the target wasn’t here, he might as well go up one more level.
After his companion left, Old Bei returned his gaze to the spider web. However, this time he noticed a thick layer of dust on the door, sparking a chain of thoughts.
"If I were being hunted and had to hide somewhere, the best option would be to avoid being found... A Level 4 Zombie is strong, but breaking through the wall would make a lot of noise. There hasn’t been any noise, so it clearly hasn’t left. It seems like this Zombie might be an intelligent one amongst its kind. If I were it, I would, out of a desire for safety, most likely hide on the highest level..."
Rustle...
With that thought, he withdrew his hand and headed up to the same direction as his companion. He only considered this possibility for a second. His companion couldn’t have possibly gone up the stairs so quietly so quickly. However, when Old Bei reached the top, he could no longer see his companion.
In his field of vision, from the third-floor stairwell to the mirror upfront and the office spaces on the side, there were no signs of anybody.
He felt something was off, but he couldn’t quite put a finger to it.
Rustle...
After a casual search around the third floor and finding no one, he noticed a trail of footprints near the stairwell on the other side. He touched his nose and followed the trail upwards.
The footprints continued all the way to an office door on the fourth floor. Old Bei looked up and saw a tightly closed door in front of him.
Knock, knock, knock.
"Hey, who’s inside?"
He knocked on the door three times, but there was no response. Old Bei bent down to listen, and he could faintly hear some movement inside.
His first reaction was that someone had already found the target and was sneaking a snack inside the room! At this thought, he felt a rush of adrenaline, not knowing whether it was excitement or anger. With a loud "bang", he kicked the door open, but the room was completely empty.
"What the..."
Clink.
A box by the door had collapsed from his vigorous kick, spreading dust all over the floor. Old Bei was stunned.
There was no one in the room. He shook his head. It felt as if his burning enthusiasm was suddenly doused with a bucket of cold water, leaving Old Bei helplessly stepping back out of the room.
Just then, a voice rang out.
"Old..."
