Chapter 93: Worthless pursuit
Arissa’s breathing scattered when she heard Jocelyn’s speech and unlike when it came from Nicklaus, she now saw the dangers in what she did yesterday.
Arissa stood up and walked towards Adele’s bed. Standing before the bed, she placed a kiss on Adele’s forehead and as if a fire quenched from her inside, she suddenly had peace but that did not stop her mind from wandering around both Jocelyn and Nicklaus’s similar reasons.
"We should heed out. Don’t you think?" Arissa suggested as she kissed the back of Adele’s left palm. If the miracle would happen as the doctors concluded, she has only one more month to wait before her sister would wake up.
Jocelyn’s eyes widened, "Who would stay with Adele then? Collins is out and we can’t risk it,"
"I have two guards outside and I kind of trust them. One would stay with her while we go with the order,"
"Guards!" Jocelyn kind of yelled with visible surprise, "Why did you let other people know this place, and now, you are suggesting we leave her with them? That’s impossible. I don’t think that’s safe and wait, who’s guards are they?"
Arissa shrugged her shoulders as she rubbed her palm on her forehead listening to Jocelyn’s thousands of questions.
At the end of Jocelyn’s questions, Arissa just continued staring at Jocelyn with a bored expression.
"Don’t give me that look," Jocelyn cautioned, "You know well that if we risk just a little information to the wrong party, your marriage would be in vain and definitely, your parents might have her which if they do, you might turn into their milking machine,"
Arissa smiled and walked towards the couch. Getting to the couch, she stretched her hands forward and pulled Jocelyn up and the moment her best friend was up, she pulled her into a tight hug.
"I thought you were not a hugger. What changed?" Jocelyn teased as she hugged Arissa back and melted into the hug.
Arissa chuckled and held Jocelyn tight, "I don’t know, I just miss you so much, Lyn. This is hard for you. It ain’t your problem but it just seems like I always pass my bad luck over to the people around me,"
Arissa complained and unlike when she was with Nicklaus, right now she was able to control her emotions even if she felt like crying.
Jocelyn parted the hug, "you don’t have to think that way." she scolded, "Even if you don’t ask, I would forever be here,"
"Hey," Arissa stepped away from her with a pout, "Enough with the emotional talks,"
Jocelyn let out a good laugh and Arissa smiled. She could not wish for anything more than the people around her to always be happy.
"Let’s grab some ice cream then. LA parks are still the best anyways,"
Jocelyn looked over at Adele, "So, is it right if I trust Mr Adams?"
"_its trickish Lyn. Ever since I knew him, he had only been loyal to my father. The sudden help he’s offering seems to be of guilt and it still doesn’t sit well with me,"
"Hmm," Jocelyn nodded, "so, you feel there’s a hidden motive attached to his help?" she asked for clarification.
Arissa nodded.
"Grab a jacket or anything while I talk to the guards outside," Arissa implied when she saw Jocelyn was about to go into some long thoughts concerning this Adele and Mr. Adams issue.
Grabbing her purse, Jocelyn kissed Adele on the crown of her head and at that moment, a reluctant and grumpy-looking bodyguard in a black suit walked into the ward.
Giving the bodyguard a wry look and easing her tension a little, she walked out of the ward and the moment Arissa saw her, they left the hospital with the remaining guard.
Getting into the car, Arissa just pinned her face on the tinted glass as she relished the freedom that comes with riding on a motorcycle.
"I miss my motorcycle," Arissa complained.
"Huh? What happened to it?" Jocelyn asked and Arissa glared at the driver as he opened the driver seat.
"Nicklaus has it. After yesterday’s incident, he wants me to be followed around like I’m some two years old toddler who can’t take care of herself," she explained with a heated glare on the poor bodyguard.
Jocelyn noticed the glare and rather than saying anything, she searched for her phone inside her purse.
"It wasn’t as if I needed his help," Arissa continued and with the way she was looking at the guard, she was letting him know that he has the chance to let his ’boss’ know everything she’s saying about him.
"He’s such an ass," Arissa scoffed and Jocelyn raised her face to her.
"So what? You are scolding him for helping you?" Jocelyn questioned in disbelief.
Arissa shake her head in a negative response, "That’s not the reason why. The thing is whenever he gets involved with my life, it just turns into a disaster. An argument must always come up," she sighed tiredly.
"What’s it?" Jocelyn asked with worry hearing Arissa detected sigh.
Arissa looked over to Jocelyn. Recognizing the expression on Arissa’s face as the tired one, Jocelyn took her friend’s palm into hers.
"I feel like he doesn’t trust me," she added and her voice was sadly solemn and it left her surprised on why she cares if he trusts her or not.
Arissa thinned her lips as she took strength from the comfort Jocelyn’s palm offered to her.
Jocelyn smiled at Arissa’s worries, "Tell me everything,"
With her gaze on their entwined hands, Arissa told Jocelyn everything that had been happening between her and Nicklaus. But for some reason, she exempted what happened at the office because no matter what, she knows Jocelyn would instantly kick against her idea of an open relationship.
Jocelyn blushed as she immediately had a new light with the way she looked at Nicklaus.
"To some extent, Nicklaus is right. He’s only worried about you and the possible dangers if you continue being reckless," Jocelyn mentioned and Arissa raised her face to her friend with a glare
Jocelyn shrugged meeting Arissa’s glare.
"What? I mean, I’d do the same if I were in his shoes. It’s not like he doesn’t trust you," Jocelyn justified her reasons.
"There you go!" Arissa stated, "He isn’t you and you’re not him. I and Nicklaus, are only bonded by a loveless marriage and our case is different,"
"There isn’t any difference," Jocelyn opposed, "You are now his wife and he has to protect you first,"
"Really? Our one night of passion never made us an item. You know well the reason we are now together," Arissa remarked.
Jocelyn rolled her eyes, "It doesn’t matter. Since he now wants you to make it work, why don’t you?"
"I can’t," Arissa gave up as she relaxed on the couch. Arguing with Jocelyn was useless because the girl would just continue with endless points.
"It’s now a month since I’ve known him but he’s still a total enigma to me," she sighed, "_we can’t make this work. It would only be a worthless pursuit if we try,"
Jocelyn shook her head, "Of course, you, can make it work. Who said you can’t? All you have to do is try to avoid his arguments. From all you said, if I should truthfully judge it, you are the one starting all of the arguments by being too high-strung,"
Arissa parted and with disbelief, "I shouldn’t have told you anything. I can’t believe you are taking someone else side. You barely know him and that’s why you are saying all this. He’s always controlling and I can’t stand it. We would only waste each other time, can’t you see?"
"I’m sorry, but I still think I would stand with him on this one. You both have one year and eleven more months to spend and here you are talking about time. Come on! That’s a whole lot of time," Jocelyn argued, "Come to think about it, he lacks nothing a lady would look for in a man and if maybe his humor isn’t your standard, then you can back off but for now, try to minimize all arguments." Glancing at Arissa, she giggled, "And you both look strikingly good together,"
Jocelyn picked up her phone, "Here, take a look. I cleared the gossip,"
Arissa’s eyes widened when she saw the post Jocelyn showed her. It was some annoying picture - precisely on the day Nicklaus ended her date with Collins and currently, Jocelyn reposted the pictures on her page and it was already ranking 32M likes and 100k comments and loading. Most of the comments were positive with thousands of reposts.
"You_!" Arissa was speechless, "Why did you post that?" she asked as she scrolled through the comments. Unlike the other day, Jocelyn’s fans are extraordinarily supportive.
"Oh my! It would be so nice watching you two bicker. You call it an argument but it’s already so cute,"
"Seriously?" Arissa asked in disbelief.
And Jocelyn did well to first of all take her phone from Arissa’s possession. Arissa would not hesitate to delete the post if the comments irk her so, the best thing to do was to prevent that by taking her phone away.
"Just be at peace with the things you can’t change," Jocelyn advised. Nicklaus was involved, and Jocelyn added the last part to her thoughts.
Arissa twisted her lips and closed her eyes while she waited for them to get to the park.
