Chapter 293: Bedtime Story.
Seconds ticked by and slowly, it became an hour ever since Mrs. Wyatt left Arissa all alone in her room, after giving her some words of comfort and encouragement.
Arissa’s heart was heavy as she lay down on her bed, staring out her window in thought. She kept on wondering about what Mrs. Wyatt disclosed to her and it increased her fears of having kids.
She began to ask herself if all parents are the same. Her parents are monsters and going over to Nicklaus’s mother, she does not know what to name the woman as, and for fuck sake, why would Nicklaus call that woman his first love?
After hurting him as heavily and damaging him as she did, Nicklaus had love for her. Was he alright?
Arissa believed he must have been still little when he experienced all of these. It made her put herself deeply into his shoes and she began to understand and see reasons why he said no one would ever love him.
She clenched her chest when she remembered him questioning her if she could love a man like him. Had she known, she would have been honest with him that night and stopped him from feeling whatever negative way he felt.
Her train of thinking paused when a knock came through from her door. Her brow furrowed and she listened attentively.
Slowly, she heard her door pushed open, and she immediately caught a wind of who it could be. Knowing who it was, she instantly shut her eyes, pretending to be fast asleep.
She can’t face him, at least not now.
Nicklaus closed the door behind him and walked into the room. He fixed his eyes on the figure on the bed and his troubles vanished, a thousand miles away.
He walked closer to the bed and sat down on the leg side of the bed. He started at her softly for a short moment and when he saw how uncomfortable she slept, he stood up from the leg side of the bed and went closer to her.
First, he straightened her folded legs and tied her flowing brown hair that was poured all her face into a bun before tucking her warmly into her brown duvet.
Seeing her already asleep, he decided to let her be and go back to his room. He leaned down and placed a light kiss on her neck and that was when he noticed she was barely asleep.
Nicklaus smiled and kissed Arissa’s hair and then, he rubbed it with his hand in a very comforting manner, "Can’t sleep?"
Arissa beamed ghostly. How did he know I was awake? She wondered in her thoughts.
His actions, the way he tied her hair up so her hair did not disturb her sleep, and how he tucked her back into the duvet all surprised her, and calmy he unknowingly lessened her heavy heart until she was left with no heavier laden.
She wasn’t replying so, Nicklaus kissed her again, this time on her shoulder. "Want me to read you a bedtime story?" he finally asked when she refused to open her eyes and only smiled at each kiss he showered her with.
Arissa could not believe the suggestion he gave. Read her a bedtime story. Does he not have more meaningful things to do than making sure she feels alright?
She was almost close to tears. He has a heart of gold and how come she never saw it this clearly until recently?
She dropped her pretense and turned to him with her eyes now wide open, "Can you?" she asked, her voice somber.
Nicklaus nodded with a smile, "If it would help you to sleep," taking her hair strands off her face, he added, "I haven’t done it before and I am a thousand percent sure I sulk at it and would also bore you out until you fall asleep,"
Arissa released a small laugh hearing how bad his reading skills were and why wasn’t she surprised he hadn’t done it before?
Nicklaus chuckled and leaned down to place a kiss on her nose, "Since that’s already a bad idea, would you like me to cuddle you till you fall asleep?" It was already late and he wanted her to sleep and not stay into the night like he does.
Arissa twisted her lips playfully. Nicklaus’s faces stayed inches apart and she did her honest best not to stare into those dark and beautiful eyes he had there.
"Reading me a bedtime story doesn’t sound so bad itself but I think I prefer we cuddle, I want you to hold me the exact way you held me last night,"
She told him holding his arm and staring into his eyes. Nicklaus stared back, he saw pity in her eyes, and immediately his brows tightened.
Arissa noticed the change in his expression. She immediately checked herself to know what she could have done wrong for him to stare at her that way.
Her inner self told her it had something to do with how she looked at him, the emotions in her eyes, and immediately, Arissa fixed her emotions and started at him softly.
When the emotions disappeared from her eyes, Nickalus shut his eyes and opened them again before smiling at her.
He pushed that thought to the back of his mind, believing he missaw her emotions, and laid down with her on the bed. Arissa faced him, pressed her face onto his chest, and placed a deep kiss on it.
She smiled and raised her, "How was your day?"
Nicklaus’s eyes run over her. He was surprised to hear what she asked. He hasn’t seen that coming, ever.
His day wasn’t nice because he had to see that bastard she knew as a father and again, his mind was troubled all through the day for no just cause and he was only able to calm down when he stepped into this room and saw her.
"It was okay, my day went fine," he lied.
Arissa blinked at him as if sensing the lie in his words. She searched his eyes and parted her lips to speak, only to shut them up when she remembered he would not come out all open from the beginning and if she wanted to love him properly, she should be able to tolerate him trying to cover his real emotions.
However, her curiosity got the best of her and she let her words out, "Why do I feel like you do not mean what you said?" Her voice came out soft and coaxing enough.
