Chapter 283: What Would The Higer-ups Do?
Arissa took in a deep breath. If she heard right, Mrs. Wyatt was technically saying she could never have a normal married life with Nicklaus until the contract expired.
Her expression turned sour, she felt like to faint as she felt strength leaving her body from the pain her heart felt.
Signing the contract that afternoon, she had been confident that she would conquer all of these easily and leave the country with her sisters to where no one would find them but now, it seems that bringing that plan to reality was not an easy feat.
She felt stupid but Arissa knew she tried. She did everything she possibly could to stay away from him.
From that night she first knew him, he made her blush, giggle, daydream, and feel like a woman when with a man in a way no one ever did. She expected never to meet the first man she felt an emotional connection with within just a night but who warned her that that man would become her husband.
Also, the connection she felt with him on that night was her top reason for avoiding all intimate connections with him.
However, all of her struggles equaled nothing. At the end of the day, her stupid heart committed what she dreads the most.
She has fallen in love with her husband and she knows it. She can no longer deny it nor reject her feelings.
Last night, she felt that urge to tell him how she felt. Her confession was just at the tip of her tongue to let themselves out and luckily, she successfully sent them back to the pit of her stomach.
Also, she fears the outcome of everything. If someone as reserved as Nicklaus could have fallen in love so deeply once upon a time, she believed he wouldn’t fall in love with someone new so quickly and more still, if he could manage to make them work, it wouldn’t count on her attitude. She might still snap out any time and cause him to fall out which can ruin their progress. Entirely.
Hence, Arissa would tell you she felt best this way and since Mrs. Wyatt declared they could not terminate the contract nor get divorced so quickly, she would have to bear with her feelings for the main time.
In the earliest days of her marriage, she felt alone, broken, and pitiful but not anymore. She had learned to strengthen her heart and the second she did, she began to see Nicklaus for who he was.
"We did not accept you for our son because of your parent’s profits return they would give to us nor because of their class. We accepted you because the higher-ups chose you to be the person next to Nicklaus," Mrs. Wyatt’s voice brought Arissa back to reality.
"Why is that?" Arissa questioned with dread of what the reply might be. She should be grateful for the information but she felt like Mrs. Wyatt was putting some details away and holy crabs, what do she care if the higher-ups chose her or not?
Arissa wanted to know what Nicklaus signed in his contract, ways they could terminate the contract, and more consequences if they chose to but Mrs. Wyatt decided to jump over to why she was chosen as his wife.
Everything sounded a bit suspicious to Arissa.
"Because they wanted to tie down your father’s wealth with theirs from the union and that’s the benefit we always reminded your father about."
Mrs. Wyatt paused.
Arissa looked at Mrs. Wyatt like the old woman had lost her mind, "How did you get my father to accept something as cunning as tieing his wealth down to someone else legally?"
Mrs. Wyatt smiled, "It wasn’t us, dear." She dragged her hand to herself, "The higher-ups planned out all of this the moment Alfred’s company crumbled. They had suspected he would look for someone to ask help from and when he approached us, it was like an open platform for them," she paused so Arissa would take in all she had said.
"Go on," Arissa said softly, signaling she was following.
Mrs. Wyatt nodded and continued, "Your father was told nothing about the benefits. He did ask questions but we spilled nothing. The only thing he knows was that he signed a series of documents and would offer us whatever we needed, whenever we decided to take our benefits from him,"
Arissa pondered over Mrs. Wyatt’s information about the contract and all of it before nodding slowly to accept it.
The higher-ups ups or whatever they called themselves were clever. Very clever.
Arissa relaxed further into her couch, "I_"
She was cut off from her speech when Rue knocked on the door before walking in with the tray of juice as Mrs. Wyatt ordered.
She placed the tray before them and left the room.
When Rue left, Arissa asked, "How did they think my bankrupt father then would be able to create much wealth they could feast on?"
Mrs. Wyatt chuckled, "That’s left for them to reply. It’s from their business mind and I only have little knowledge of that." She awkwardly tried to end the conversation.
She knew more and everything but Mrs. Wyatt decided to end the conversation where it was now. She was only making things easier for her son who seemed to already be fully in love with the woman before her.
She never believed her son would get this better. When the higher-ups presented the offer of a new promotion for Nicklaus as bait, she rejected it but now, she was grateful for all of it.
The changes he underwent made her so proud as a mother and for the first time since she became his mother, she finally felt like one.
Arissa looked at Mrs. Wyatt weirdly, "And, let’s put it this way." She licked her lower lip thoughtfully, "What if I no longer want a divorce after the two years?"
She paused, feeling her rebellious side growing stronger concerning this contract and not terminating it.
She took in an exhale, "....what would the higher-ups do?"
