Chapter 273: I Would Save You In A Heartbeat.

Arissa had difficulty speaking.

A lot of words assembled in her mind to give to him as a reply but the problem she had was how she would let them out without giving herself out that she wanted to spend her days with him.

Nicklaus stood straight. He stared into her eyes for a short moment and said. "What do you want? You can tell me about it," his voice and expression now soft.

He was ready to listen to whatever she wants and if it should be something within his power, he would make it possible.

Arissa’s face turned sad. She closed the distance between them, "I do not want you doing anything with my parents,"

Nicklaus’s face dropped and so did his emotions. His eyes hardened and so did his heart.

Nicklaus pinned his blazing eyes on her. He held her arm and harshly dragged her to himself.

"Why?" he growled at her, "I am your husband, who do you think should protect you at this moment if not me?"

Arissa’s eyes widened at how quickly his anger could go from zero to a hundred. Her gaze darted between her arm and his eyes, pleading with him to lose his hold a bit but Nicklaus acted blind to her eye talks.

Rather, he tightened his hold and searched her eyes, "Tell me! Speak to me, Arissa. Do you intend I stay back and watch you get hurt?"

Arissa gulped, "Nicklaus please, my arm hurts," she managed to speak up. She felt like he would crush her bone anytime soon and it terrified her.

As if scalded by her skin, Nicklaus hurriedly let go of her arm and took steps away. Disbelief etched his face, his Adam’s apple bulged up and down.

His expression changed from hard to hurt in a second and he began to believe Geal’s words. Perhaps Geal was right.

Arissa caressed her arm. "I do not want you to get involved with my family. I’ve said this so many times," she said in a second, almost crying.

Nicklaus shook his head, "This is your fight which makes it our fight. If you don’t want to give your parents what they deserve, I will."

Arissa tried to smile rather than cry. His words covered her with guilt and sadness overwhelmed her.

"For fuck sake, Arissa! Say something," he said sternly, "Tell me what you want, sign the papers or you let me into your life, down to your parent’s affair,"

Overwhelmed, she stood frozen.

"Just promise me you will save yourself first," Arissa managed to say, feeling dazed. Her heartbeat tripled and she felt suffocated.

Nicklaus’s lips parted in silence surprise. He blinked slowly, taking her words in. Did she just reject processing our divorce, he thought to himself.

A wave of excitement coursed through his bones, paralyzing him. His lips curled into a smooth smile that touched his eyes.

He closed the distance between them and held her to himself, "All I ask is that you are kept safe," he said soothingly rubbing and kissing her hair.

Arissa grew unnaturally still in his arms. She blinked in surprise, "What about you?" she questioned from his arm.

"We should talk about you _"

Arissa forcefully pushed him away, "About me? We have been talking about me all these while and now it should be about you." She held his gaze, "How about you?"

Nicklaus looked away from her gaze, "Arissa."

Arissa’s heart ached. "Not now, Nicklaus. Give me an answer, what about you?"

Nicklaus looked into her eyes. The pain in her eyes made his stomach contract into a tight ball. "I’d put you first in a heartbeat, Arissa. No questions."

Arissa gasped and then she did something he never expected. She took steps closer to him, "You are just so stupid," she cursed hitting on his chest.

Nicklaus stayed still and let her hit him. He felt pain but not from her hits or anything physical. The pain came deep from his heart.

"I hate it when you act this way," she continued still hitting him hard, "Do you know what you do to me whenever you act this way? Do you know what you would leave damaged if my hopes concerning your actions were not real?"

Arissa pressed both hands on his chest and pushed him away. Nicklaus took two steps back to give her the space she wanted and then he watched her from afar.

Arissa bent to the floor and picked up the papers. When her eyes fell on his signature, the tears she had been holding back finally released themselves.

She sniffed and looked up at him, "How long have you signed this?"

Nicklaus clenched his fist when he saw her tears gushing out so strong and so real. She had always wanted a divorce, he was sure she had it on the top of her bucket list so why the tears now he offered it to her freely?

Confused he took a step forward.

"Do not take another step," Arissa cried holding her hand up, signaling him to stand still, "Tell me how long you had this signed."

"An hour ago," Nicklaus muttered.

Arissa laughed, a heartbroken one with more tears, "An hour ago? You were preparing this and that was why you refused to answer my calls or texts?"

A short silence lasted between them when Nicklaus did not reply. He gazes down at the papers and away to the sky.

"Arranging our divorce did not cause me to ignore your calls or texts," he faced her, "Your words this morning did. I figured you wanted to say more,"

"And about that, I am sorry. I shouldn’t have said those words but I was only scared and confused." She apologized immediately.

"That shouldn’t have been an issue. I’ve said it before and would never get tired of saying it. I would readily destroy whoever tries to hurt you. Should_"

"Nick wait," Arissa cut him off, "Are you in love with me?" She dropped the question and her heartbeat stilled.
