Chapter 274: His Unforgetable Wifey.
Nicklaus gawed at her in disbelief. His lips slightly parted, and he stood there unblinking, trying to process the words Arissa just asked. His heart stopped and his mind panicked.
Staring at him, hard knots constricted her throat, making it hard for her to breathe. A sticking wave of terror welled up from her belly when she recollected what she had just asked him.
"Forget I said that," she looked down to her feet, "I should not have asked that, it was a thoughtless question,"
Nicklaus did not say a word in acceptance or denial. However, his lips parted to say a word or more but only air escaped his lips and it broke Arissa further. She had always known she was alone with her feelings.
"I understand." she smiled brightly, "You love me but you’re not in love with me," she concluded that he loved her to feel better.
At that moment, Arissa envied his ex. If she uses her title as a wife to feel better, it’s meaningless. She holds the title alone but that woman holds his heart and that’s the only thing that matters.
This time around, Nicklaus nodded at her words, giving out the wrong message.
Arissa smiled, "I’m grateful you can love me." galaxies spread across her eyes, and her inner bones awakened with gladness.
This should be a start. If Nicklaus can love her, he can also fall in love with her, right?
Nicklaus let out an apologetic chuckle. "That wasn’t what I meant. I do not deserve love and the same goes for everyone. I am not capable of loving anyone," he lied to her and himself.
Arissa’s eyes widened. She was strangled with her saliva and her heart skipped a beat. He doesn’t love me, she thought and instantly more tears escaped her eyes.
"Then why..." If before she had shed tears, now she began to shed oceans, and gradually, her heart shattered. She tried to return to her normal self, but it wasn’t possible.
His words threw her off balance like a heavy rock thrown on a peaceful sailing ship.
"Arissa what’s wrong?"
"Just why..." her expression scattered, "If you do not love me, why do you care about me so much? It doesn’t make sense,"
She took a slow step backward and continued, "I can’t understand you. Why risking everything to keep me safe when you’re not capable of loving?"
Nicklaus’s lips turned thinned, "Arissa, I... end your tears, and let’s talk," Her tears tightened his heart, and seeing them made his thoughts disassembled and everywhere.
Arissa took her hand to her face and wiped it but more tears escaped her eyes, "I can’t end it," she cried looking up at Nicklaus with her teary eyes, "Tell me why you care so much,"
Rather than holding her gaze as she cried more, Nicklaus stared down at his rug and listened to her go on.
"I do not deserve all of these. I also do not deserve your care because I do not matter to you," she managed to say, pushing through her choking tears.
Hearing her now, Nicklaus raised his face to her and the encouraging emotion his expression held was priceless, "You matter. And I appreciate you for coming into my life as a wife. You don’t need to do this alone, I will walk with you and let you know that you deserve all that I do for you and more,"
Arissa sniffed, "But you do not love me," she pressed on that, her cheeks turning more red.
An unexpected small laugh left Nicklaus’s lips when he saw how cute she looked, standing there, staring at him with her all-red face, and if not for the reason she cried at the moment, he would have taken a thousand snaps of her.
Arissa’s heart broke the more when Nicklaus laughed. She felt he laughed at her foolishness for thinking he could ever love her.
Nicklaus walked over to her, held her in his arms, and pinched her cheek. She kept on asking if he loved her and to Nicklaus, no greater sound had been heard and he loved it.
His thumb brushed over her blush-pink lips, "I do not love but for you, I can make an exemption," he told her.
’Haven’t you already made this exemption?’ his mind asked him.
Nicklaus expected Arissa to nod with a smile after he said what she might have been wanting to hear. But the next words that left her mouth left him in awe and made him love her more deeply.
"I’ve got lots of flaws, Nick,"
Nicklaus smiled and dried her tears with his thumb, "Diamonds are still valuable, even when they are flawed. So how much more my wife? Huh?" he teased her to brighten the atmosphere and to make her feel more worth it.
And then his voice changed from cheesy to serious, "Your flaws are your perfections, Arissa. It makes you exceptional and tags you as my unforgettable wifey." he pinched her red nose tip at the end of his speech.
Arissa’s smile finally turned into a laugh and Nicklaus stayed silent, staring at her with gentle fondness that could make the next person want to be loved by him.
"Does this mean you are no longer mad at me?" she asked after the laugh, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Nicklaus chuckled, "I still am. You would need to get punished for me to let go,"
Arissa blushed, understanding his language when he talked about punishment.
They both stayed quiet and so did their surrounding. They stayed quiet, watching into each other eyes with great love and gentleness.
"Don’t ever try what you did this morning again," Nicklaus spoke up first in a warning tune, "Always put yourself first and if you repeat covering up your enemies, I won’t forgive you this easily,"
"Noted," Arissa agreed eying his lips. She salivated over it and before she could take in a gulp, Nicklaus seized her lips.
