Chapter 231: His Kind Is Rare.
When Arissa walked into Adele’s ward with Nicklaus, Collins was already inside the ward with Jocelyn. He was staring at his sleeping patient - Adele.
When the door pulled open, Collins turned to the door. The hospital report files in his hand lowered themselves.
Arissa stood at the door with a smile while Nicklaus stood beside her, staring at the Doctor. Arissa walked into the ward with fast strides and enveloped Collins in a hug.
"You came," she gasped, wrapping her hands around him.
Collins was stunned by the sudden hug. Somehow, his eyes met Nicklaus’s unreadable ones. He stared away from Nicklaus and dropped the files on the floor. "I told you I’d always be a call away," he reminded, returning the hug to be more affectionate than mere friends.
Arissa laughed and pulled away from the hug. She teasingly held both sides of his cheeks and a small pout formed on her lips.
"You look stressed out," she noticed holding his gaze, "You still don’t know when to take a rest, do you?" she scolded him with a motherly voice.
Collins smiled. "And you look more beautiful and happy," he replied to her.
Arissa giggled at his words and Collins pulled her into another hug. "I missed you so much. Are you okay now?" he asked.
Arissa sniffed, "I am, I was just so happy and sad at the same time which made my emotions get the best of me. I’m sorry I got you worried," she apologized.
"Its_"
"Arissa," Nicklaus called from behind the two. Jealously was a vivid emotion on his expression, he was jealous she still cared a little too much about this doctor. He understands they are friends but...
Nicklaus’s expression got Jocelyn to choke on her laugh. She had just found a new source of entertainment.
Nicklaus and Arissa were anti-boredom for her.
Collins pulled away first and Arissa turned to Nicklaus. She stared deep into his eyes. His emotions were now unreadable which seemingly annoyed her. An unreadable expression from him screams a bad omen and she doesn’t want that expression between them again.
"Your files," Nicklaus said pointing to the floor as he tugged Arissa back into his arm.
Arissa frowned when Nicklaus pulled her in as if he wants her to stay away from Collins. Worst still, his face was back to the cold-faced man she knew at first. It was as if Collins triggered something in him.
Collins gave Nicklaus a peaceful expression. He understands Nicklaus’s emotions but he also has no plans to make Arissa his which means Nicklaus could relax.
He doesn’t have to be overly protective of her. By law, she’s already his wife and would forever be even after a divorce. There was no need for Nicklaus to hold her that close possessively as if there was a silent war between them.
Arissa pulled herself away from Nicklaus’s arm and bent to the floor. If Nicklaus was hurt by the act, he did not show it. Rather, he bent to the floor with her and helped her to pick the files. He passed the ones he picked up to her and helped her to stand straight.
There was a twist of emotions in Collins’s eyes while watching them and for Jocelyn, her lips parted in shock. The display of affection from Nicklaus was the sweetest she had ever seen.
So sweet that her eyes stung. She knew she had always been right siding with Nicklaus whenever Arissa complained.
How does Arissa manage to take all of this cuteness without melting away? Jocelyn asked herself, knowing herself, she knew she would have fallen head over heels had it been she was the one, contract or no contract.
His kind of man is rare. The type who adores a woman this deep is hardly seen and she wishes Arissa would realize this before it gets too late.
"Thank you," Arissa said to Nicklaus. Adding it with the ones she held, she passed them over to Collins.
Collins took the file from her after forcefully taking his eyes off Nicklaus. "Thank you," he managed to say.
Nicklaus took Arissa’s hand and rather than standing with her, he lead her to the couch to seat.
’He dots on her,’ Jocelyn noted with a smiling face. She could see how much he don’t want her stressed just by how he led her to the couch.
"Nicklaus," Arissa muttered.
Nicklaus made her seat first, "You seem stressed. Take a short rest and let me talk to Collins about what you want to." he told her as he tucked a strand of her flowing hair behind her ear.
Arissa nodded. "Thanks,"
Nicklaus knelt before her, took her long leg in his hand, and took off her sneakers gently. Arissa’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, forming an arch when he knelt before her and the moment he took her leg into his hand, her mind froze.
Her heart raced and she could not help the shiver that ran down her spine. Nor could she help the tingling sensation that spread like wildfire over her.
Dumbfounded and unable to say a word of disagreement, she watched him take off her shoes and left her with her white socks alone. It did not stop there, he massaged her toe saying, "You are stressed down to your toes,"
Collins turned away from them and faced Adele. He could deny it all he wants, but his feelings for her were still as strong as ever. It doesn’t take a day to kill feelings as strong as the ones he has for her.
Jocelyn was absolutely stunned, she stared at them dazedly before she took notice of Collins’s reactions. He looked broken, and it somehow hurt Jocelyn.
If Arissa’s parents haven’t sold her out, Collins might still have had some chance to be with Arissa but at the same time, if they haven’t, her friend might never have known this happiness that glowed from her inside.
Fuck, love is complicated. And for that, Jocelyn decided to stay away from all of it and keep her heart safe. The headache that comes with love wasn’t worth it.
