Chapter 230: You Look So Broken When You Cry.
Nicklaus trapped her between his arms, "Smile," he ordered her when she stood straight from picking up her phone.
Arissa raised a brow at him, "I should smile?" she asked with a pout.
He ran his thumb over her plump and proportionate lips raised in a pout, "Yes, smile. One more time,"
Arissa blushed harder, "Why?" she managed to ask as warmth spread between her legs, causing her to clench them together.
His thumb and the warm air that escaped his lips and his body that was almost pressed on her messed with her mind.
"I want to see it," he eyed her lips with longing before looking into her eyes, "I guess I’m bewitched by it and want more of that feeling," he said with a genuine voice.
Arissa blinked, and her jaw drooped. She cleared her throat nervously, raised her hand to her non-itchy hair, and began scratching it.
"Arissa, smile," his voice was mixed with tenderness and loving impatience.
Arissa grew weak at his plea and before she knew it, her lips broke into a wide bright glowing smile with audible giggles leaving her lips.
Nicklaus swallowed at the beauty in her smile. He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear and smiled back at her.
"You look so broken when you cry," he said softly, massaging her red cheek with his thumb.
He went on. "I don’t want to ever see you cry. Even if we get divorced someday, I want this smile to forever be on your face. Can you promise me this?"
Arissa nodded. This wasn’t the first time Nicklaus said this but the feeling that came with the words this time stunned her. It sounded genuine and all-loving. It was as if her sadness could make him sad.
"Words Arissa." he corrected her from using her head to speak.
Arissa placed a hand on his shoulder, "I promise," she said looking straight into his eyes. "I also want you to know I’ll never forget you. Not even when I’m old, gray, and on my dying bed," she confessed.
Nicklaus trembled, his eyes stung at her words, "Thank you," he said and pulled her into another deep bone-crushing huge, "This means a lot to me," he buried his face into her neck.
Tears threatened to spill. For the first time, someone promising not to forget him made him feel loved. The Wyatt couple and even some of his one-night stands have said words like these to him but none could be compared to how happy hearing the words from her made him feel.
Arissa drew in a sharp breath to control her feelings. She hugged him back, "Mr. Knewman should be waiting," she reminded him.
Nicklaus released her from the hug even though it was hard to. Kissing the crown of her head one more time, he held her hand and knocked lightly on the door before opening it.
Stephen met Arissa’s eyes with hope. "Were you able to reach him?" he asked even before the couple would get to the bed.
Arissa nodded with a wide smile, "He’s on his way to the hospital," she told him.
Stephen blinked rapidly, trying to process the miracle he had just heard. His fingers trembled badly from great shock.
"He is?" he asked to be sure he heard well.
Arissa smiled, "He is." she got to the bed and took Beatrice’s dried fleshless hand in hers, "She just has to hold on a little more," she said in thought, staring at Beatrice.
Tears rolled down Stephen’s eyes. He could not believe that God could be that faithful to a mere mortal like him.
He stared at Arissa and back at his wife.
"She’s beautiful," Arissa whispered in a trance. Her hand moved to Beatrice’s bald hair and felt it with a smile. "And she is a strong woman," she added.
She turned to Nicklaus. He was also staring at her so their eyes immediately collided. They conversed with their eyes, asking the next person how to break the news to the man.
Nicklaus looked at the woman and back to Arissa. She had just told him she wanted Stephen to know at the moment.
’After the operation,’ Nicklaus picked a reasonable time the news should be revealed, still with his eyes.
Arissa answered him with a nod of her head.
Stephen gazed into Arissa’s kind brown eyes. She was an exact copy of Laura which stirred some emotions in him.
He ran his hand through his hair. The fact that Arissa’s presence made him crave his daughter the most did not sit down well with him.
He took Beatrice’s other hand in his. "I failed her," he said all of a sudden.
Arissa raised her face to him. "You failed her?" she does not mean to pry but she could not help it. There was more she wants to know about this couple. She already loves them and wishes she could heal them in the blink of an eye.
Stephen’s eyes turned blurry, "Yes, I did." he kept his reply short. "Thank you so much, Mr. Wyatt," he raised his face to Nicklaus.
Nicklaus stood away from the three awkwardly which made Arissa, Stephen, and Beatrice look like a little family with an older daughter.
"You should thank my wife," he said.
Stephen rubbed his wife’s hand, "I would never be able to thank her enough,"
Arissa raised a brow at them. Why was this about her? She did nothing. Nicklaus did all the work here and Stephen doesn’t need to thank her. At least until Collins says he can do something. The situation seems hopeless but in as much as Beatrice breaths, there was hope.
Arissa’s phone beeped, the sound of an incoming message. Turning her phone, she smiled seeing what Collins sent.
[I’m on my way to your ward, how are you feeling?]
"I need to leave for a while, Dr. Brodkin just arrived," she told Stephen.
Stephen blinked in disbelief. When Arissa said on his way, he had expected a day joinery and not minutes.
He nodded at the couple, "Thank you so much." he said again. Arissa smiled at him and kissed Beatrice on her head before leaving the ward with Nicklaus behind her.
