Chapter 227: A Harsh One.
Arissa was bearly able to control her emotions. When the door was opened from the inside, she stood thunderstruck by guilt on her parent’s behalf.
She took in the man said to be Adele’s father and she swear the man before her was not okay. He was being eaten from the inside. Her heart immediately bled for the man, his whole collarbones were pointy with sacks of black bags under his eyes.
He could pass as someone customized for a zombie character in a movie. A wave of sad emotions filled her heart. She somehow imagined this for a grieving couple but never expected it.
How much this man have suffered was glaring on his face. His wife on the hospital bed with a lost daughter would never be a story she would want to hear about.
"Mr. Wyatt," Stephen acknowledged with a flat sad tone the moment he opened the door. "Thank you so much for coming, Mr. Wyatt," he stretched his hand for a handshake.
Nicklaus took the man’s hand with his stern mask back on. "It’s okay. I’m also grateful you would let me see your wife with no special condition,"
Stephen nodded before his eyes darted to the Lincoln Princess. He did not let Nivklaus in for no reason. He let him in because Arissa was Laura’s daughter and maybe Laura might tag along to see her best friend.
Arissa looked into the man’s green eyes that was exactly Adele’s set of eyes. Her dizziness immediately returned.
"This is Arissa, my wife," feeling Nicklaus’s warm hand squeezing her own, she was drawn back into reality. A harsh one.
Arissa smiled at Stephen, "Mr. Knewman," she said stretching her hand to receive his. When he took her hand, her tears almost dropped.
From her point of view few seconds after meeting him, she saw a nice person in him. Her lips were drawn into a thin line, "Thank you so much for letting me in,"
Arissa extended her hold on the man’s hand, trying to comfort him with her handshake. Her heart bled so badly as if pierced from a thousand places.
Nicklaus’s brows ceased when he started at their handshake. He forced himself to know this was a grieving man but he couldn’t as in the next second, he possessively pulled Arissa to himself, abruptly ending the handshake.
Arissa did not think much about what just happened but Stephen did. It gave him a lot of memories. Times, when he was always that way with Beatrice revisited him.
Pushing that memory aside, he invited the young couple in. "Come on,"
It was difficult for Arissa to walk in. Her sneakers began to feel heavy for her legs to lift. She felt remorseful, the couple’s suffering should have come to an end earlier if she had paid more attention.
She fixed her eyes on the woman on the bed. So skinny and pale. Her skin was also turning purplish but miraculously, she still breathes.
She clenched Nicklaus’s hand for support as she walked toward the woman. She doesn’t want to seat, she wants to see the face of the lady.
Collins once made a report about a lady’s uncanny resemblance to Adele and she was curious to know if it was this woman. Finally standing before the woman, she saw the whole of the woman’s face, and her feet halted so quickly.
"Nick_" she gasped.
The woman on the bed was lifeless, technically lifeless. Arissa could not comprehend how she breathes. Her whole skin was purple with dark circles under her eyes.
Forgive her, but this woman looked like a ghost. However, that did not hide Adele sticking resemblance to her.
Arissa’s knees grew weak.
If Adele looks like her mother this much, how were her parents able to hide her over the years? Goosebumps covered her skin.
She became scared. Scared of her parents.
How could they cause so much suffering to people and are still skilled enough to act clean before the world?
Most importantly, what happened to this woman, why is she dying?
"Arissa, I said relax," Nicklaus whispered watching her reactions. His hand on her waist tightened but not too tight to bruise her. He held her that way for her to remember his solely beside her and she could cry on him.
"Nicklaus," she turned to him with teary eyes. "I_" she choked again. She wrapped her hand around his back and buried her face into his chest, "She’s dying," she cried.
Each of Arissa’s sobs slapped Nicklaus’s heart and left more scars on it. "I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you earlier," he apologized.
Stephen sat down on his usual seat and started at the couple before starting back at his wife. He did not think much about Arissa’s reaction. Anyone who sees Beatrice now won’t be able to walk away with dry eyes.
Mr. Wyatt had called him a few days back to spend a few moments with him. He never knew what for but when he saw Laura’s daughter, it made sense.
Seeing her cry so much, he remembered his daughter and his heart began to bleed again. His daughter would also have cried this way seeing her mother in this condition. He shut his eyes and let out a tears filled exhale from his lips.
"This is all the doctors could do. Her brain is damaged already and her breathing leaves me marveling at God with more adoration for him," he stated absentmindedly.
Nicklaus turned to him, "Have you tried other doctors?" he asked. Little hope encircled Arissa’s heart. She peeped at Stephen also waiting for his reply. This woman’s death would hurt her the most even if she hadn’t known her fully.
Stephen sighed. "I did, they all referred me to a particular person after doing all they could for her. They referred to him as my only hope in humans and but for the past weeks now, after sending lots of emails, I haven’t gotten a reply," he grieved.
He went on, "Dr. Brodkin_"
Arissa cut him off, "Dr. Brodkin?"
"Yes," Stephen answered, "Dr. Collins Brodkin. He’s an extremely busy person but my only savior in the human race. If he could just take one glance into my emails, I would no longer have to be scared." he held Beatrice’s hand, "she’s giving up,"
Arissa dried her tears with hope. "He took care of my sister’s operation days ago. I still have his contact with me. If you could lend me a minute, I would try calling him," she shared.
Stephen sniffed in pain, "Thank you, God." he thanked God first, "Could you please help me call him? Even if he won’t reply,"
Arisa nodded, "Sure,"
