Chapter 226: Adele’s Parents.
Arissa scanned the familiar surrounding. This was the hallway to the ward she saw those loving couples in. Why were they going down this lane?
She turned to Nicklaus with questions in her eyes. She won’t have felt this way if he had only tagged her along. He said he wanted her to meet someone and that made her nervous.
A few days ago, she came here but had none of these feelings while right now, even her feet refused to move. Her feet were reluctant to leave the floor, it was as if she was going to discover a big secret or commit a large crime.
If not Nicklaus held her hand to move, she would have refused to walk. Even her heart could not stop beating so loud.
Nicklaus turned to her feeling how uneasy she was. Holding both sides of her face, he placed a kiss on her life bridge.
She calmed down a bit after the comforting kiss. "Do you know the couple in there?" he asked close to the ward door.
Arissa shook her head in denial.
"Then relax," Nicklaus urged. "You look so pale and tensed up like you committed a crime," he added in a serious tone.
Arissa moistened her lower lip with her tongue. "I can’t help feeling this way," she confided in him.
Nicklaus frowned. "Is there something you’re scared of?" he questioned searching her eyes.
"No,"
"Then what is it?" he asked, softly tucking strands of her hair behind her ear.
Arissa sighed. "I don’t know why you tagged me along. You said you want me to meet someone and it leaves me uneasy,"
Nicklaus chuckled. He looked around the quiet hallway and his eyes collided with Nathan standing at a lone hidden corner.
"Uneasy, why? Did you hurt someone?" he said jokingly, eliminating the small air passing space between them to lighten her mood.
Arissa’s brown eyes bored deeply into his black ones as she felt him wrap his hand around her slender waist.
"Who do we want to see?" She mumbled searching his eyes.
Nicklaus blinked at her with complicated emotions running through his eyes. His free hand pinched the skin between his brows in thought. He can’t find a way to arrange the news and break it down to her.
He released a breath and wrapped his other hand over the previous one on her waist. He pulled her closer with their faces inches apart.
"Promise me you won’t freak out. This would be sudden," he warned her.
Arissa kept on searching his face. "Why?"
He drew in a sharp breath, pulling her unimaginably close to support her, he said, "I want you to meet Adele’s parents in person. They are in that ward."
Arissa’s ears rang when she heard Nicklaus’s words. She choked on her saliva and the world stood still. Time froze and even her heart did.
Her pulpits stood still looking at Nicklaus. No sound was heard, she did not even breathe and it was until her eyes stung from not blinking that she recovered herself.
"You lie," she said aloud in a shocked voice.
Nicklaus frowned upon her words. He had expected a reaction as shocked as this from her but why would she call him lie so fast?
Has he ever lied to her? She always jumps into fast assumptions and that was one of her shortcomings.
"Nick," Arissa tugged his shirt, "Tell me you’re lying,"
Nicklaus’s eyes went from her fist on him to her eyes, "Have I ever lied to you?" he questioned her.
Arissa froze. Her fist on his collar let go, and she turned pale. "I feel dizzy," she told him, her voice weak and shaky.
Nicklaus’s hands on her waist tightened. He brought a hand to her face and wiped her sweaty forehead with his palm. "Relax,"
Arissa raised her face to him, "I can’t_" she choked, "I can’t relax," tears slipped from her eyes.
"Arissa," he pressed her face to his chest and rubbed her back in a circular soothing motion, "Calm down, I’m here."
Arissa burst into tears. "Why did you help me?" and to think she had only been hurting him made her feel guilty and the guilt sucked her dry.
Nicklaus patted her head, "I don’t want to see you sad, stressed, or unhappy." he kept his reply short though he had numerous reasons.
Arissa melting heart melted wholly with nothing left. The liquid from her melted heart spread across her body, touching every part and making her simple-like feeling blossom into something stronger.
She lifted her now red face to him. All red and teary, she looked more adorable to Nicklaus. He stared down at her with admiration in his eyes.
"You would have told me this earlier," she scolded him.
"I’m sorry," he apologized, not offended by her scolding him rather than a thank you.
Arissa sighed. "Now I look like a mess," she cried out with a rich chuckle at the end.
Nicklaus smiled, "You’re cute. There ain’t anything out of place in you," he said seriously. Unable to resist his cuteness anymore, Arissa placed a strong deep kiss on his cheek.
Nicklaus’s grip on her waist tightened and she could guess what was next. A heavy kiss with his hands roaming about. She loves it when she does that but now, she was more than anxious to visit the couple.
"The couples first, I want to meet them," she told him, preventing him from kissing her.
Nicklaus agreed to her words by letting go of her waist and taking her left hand. He led them to the ward and Arissa stood beside him. No, more like a tremble behind him.
She wasn’t ready for this. She wasn’t ready to meet Adele’s parents. How would she explain to them that she was the daughter of the couple who hid their only child from them and caused them pain?
What if they are an angry couple who would take out their anger on her before involving the police? Why was Adele’s mother in the hospital for so long? Was she sick?
She planned to search for them but reality was faster as she never knew someone was already in that before her.
"Are you ready?" Nicklaus questioned, snapping her out of her thought.
Arissa shook her head in confusion. "I mean__ yes," she accepted with a racing heart.
