Chapter 216: His undoing.

Cassandra’s ears picked up the words that escaped Jocelyn’s lips, trying to catch a glimpse of what was going on inside the ward without being suspicious.

She already felt suspected because, for the past few days, Jocelyn always came up with an excuse to stop her from seeing the patient.

Jocelyn watched the nurse’s attitude from the side of her eyes while she acted like she was all focused on her call.

Her suspicions about the nurse were now confirmed by the nurse’s overly curious attitude. Ending the call with Arissa, she smiled at the nurse before going back into the ward.

Casandra’s smile fell the moment the door was shut. Her professional look went off, replaced with a sinister one.

Seeing no one in sight, she took out her cell phone and reached out to Alfred.

"She’s awake," she informed the moment the call was connected, "I think this makes it easier for you," she added in an annoying voice.

"How DARE YOU!!!" Alfred thundered from the other end, "How dare you give me this news after I paid you to kill her?"

Casandra clicked her tongue, "Don’t talk like you ain’t owing me," she said. "I did all I could. You are not just worth going to prison for,"

She continued, "As I said, you now have an open space to kill her better,"

Alfred calmed down, but not entirely. "That was supposed to kill her off better," he argued with an anger-filled voice

"Like she had a Cardiologist attack?" Cassandra rolled her eyes, "That would arouse suspicion the most," she deadpanned like he was stupid.

Alfred’s rage grew. She had been a nurse for a while now. If she knew that method would arose suspicion, why didn’t she say it earlier?

Did she just realize it today?

"I can’t go to jail for child kidnapping," his voice trembled from fear for the first time since dealing with Adele.

He was scared but he refused to accept it.

Cassandra let out a mocking chuckle, "As I said before, I think it’s best to kill her in the open." she feigned a tired yawn, "Have a good day ahead while you plot some more bound-to-fail dramas. Don’t forget my remaining pay," her ending statement was stronger than a warning.

....

Nicklaus who couldn’t help but be full-time captivated by the new woman beside him could only spend his time on her while he tried to figure her out.

He knew she had this glow in her but never suspected an energy as beautiful as this in her. She wasn’t speaking nor could he see her face fully as she was just staring out the window.

However, he could feel the new energy from her inside. She doesn’t feel like the cold and detached wife he once had.

Right now, she was more harmless and extremely cheerful with a gradient smile never leaving her lips.

Sneaking his phone out of his gray suit pant, he carefully positioned it at a nice angle, and with a tap on his screen, he stole a picture. Secretly, he took two more pictures of her.

When he was done, a smile graced his lips as he watched the pictures. She was picture-perfect, with the best view he has ever seen since he graced this earth.

Eyes filled with admiration, he turned to her again before facing ahead. Lukas who had seen all that happened from the review mirror could only smile at his boss’s sudden cuteness.

Lukas was proud of his boss. The man seemed an all-through new leaf which was too good to be true. Due to how his boss treated women coldly in the past with much disgust, and how the couple never go a second without arguing, he had never seen this coming.

The car was quiet, but the air was warm and comfortable as they both respected each other’s privacy.

Nicklaus reached for Arissa’s hand. Taking it in his, he squeezed it gently to have her attention. "You seem spaced out," he noticed.

"I’m not." she covered the back of his palm with hers, "I just can’t wait to get there,"

Nicklaus’s eyes darted to that small action. She might not know this but it just made him like her more. It was as if she was giving him a sense of protection and togetherness.

"Get where?" He asked.

Nicklaus was still clueless about where they were going or who they were going to meet. He had forgotten to ask these questions earlier as he had been so over the moon with her reason to leave the house with him.

"To the hospital," she told him.

"Adele is awake," it dawned on him.

Arissa nodded at him with a toothless smile, tears filled the brim of her eyes almost immediately. Nicklaus stared at her for a while before wiping the falling tears off her cheeks. She would be his undoing.

"Then you have to be happy and not cry,"

Arissa choked. "I’m not crying because I’m sad,"

"I know. Either way, I don’t want to see you crying," his warm fingers on her face froze when he heard himself and Arissa’s eyes widened at his words.

He opened his mouth to say something but thought better against it as he just stared into her wide eyes with unspeakable emotions speaking by themselves.

Arissa stretched her hand to his face. At the skin-to-skin contact, she blinked while Nicklaus stiffened. An extraordinary feeling ran down her spine.

She felt linked to him in every aspect, both emotionally and she could tell he felt it by the way he stiffened.

Slowly, Nicklaus’s hand pulled away from her face, his heart beating so fast. Arissa’s eyes fixed on his retreating palm and back to his eyes.

Her thumb danced on his moist lips and the spark in her stomach spread into every fiber of her body. Her heart skipped a beat.

She breathed with a smile. "Nicklaus,"

Nicklaus’s eyes went from her eyes to her hand covering his. From her reaction, he understood she felt it.

"We’re almost there," he said randomly with a deep breath to stop his lips from spewing out some careless words.
