Chapter 208: Mixed Signals.
Terrified from the strangling nightmare, Arissa was pulled back to reality with a strong seat up and a horrified small scream left her throat.
Her body trembled, and her head tore from a splitting headache. Her body tensed up also as sweat pumped heavily out of her.
The nightmare with Nicklaus kept on reoccurring like a normal event and each time it does reoccur, she sees nothing more than Nicklaus himself lying in the pool of his blood.
It was frightening and alarming.
She turned to her side and picked up the phone she kept beside her before dozing off. She had been waiting for Nicklaus to call which caused her to end up sleeping with her phone.
"10:45," she murmured seeing the time on her screen.
A sigh escaped her lips when she heard her stomach grumble loudly. She climbed down from the bed. Picking her hand towel from the vanity table, she dried her nightmare sweat before going out of the room. With a low sigh filled with anxiety, she stood before Nicklaus’s door.
"Why isn’t he yet back?" Arissa was concerned.
There was no sign someone was behind that door. She walked into the elevator and decided to wait for him in the living room. Waiting in her room would be a bad idea, she might just doze off again.
About to press the elevator buttons, she decided to change locations. Staying alone in the living room would be boring as she wasn’t a lover of movies. Arissa decided to go to the nursery first. It wasn’t intentional, something pulled her there. When she get there, she would text him or call if needed.
Walking out of the elevator, surprise lay over her face when she saw the nursery door open. Everyone was supposed to be asleep or was Mrs. Wyatt not yet done with the decorations?
It wasn’t even like the baby would be coming soon. She needs to end her contract with Nicklaus first before he could get married to someone else again.
Hence, her mouth poured open when she saw the last person she expected in there. She stood away from the door for a moment, watching him.
He was stunning in his gray shirt and pajama pants. His outfit indicated he had been home for a while. Wait, why is he even here? She asked herself.
When he bent to the stuffed fluffy toys arranged on the floor, her heart trembled at his interest. "Do you like it?" Arissa asked leaning on the nursery door.
Nicklaus’s shoulders stiffened when he heard her voice. He let go of the white teddy he was examining before standing straight again.
He turned to her. "I do, you did this?" he asked her.
Arissa shook her head, "Your mother did."
Nicklaus picked up a small monkey teddy from the floor and placed it on the bigger ones. "I told you to retire early for the night," he reminded her as he arranged the teddy.
Arissa leaned off the door and took a step into the nursery. "I tried to but I wasn’t able to sleep,"
Nicklaus’s brow creased at her reason for being up. "Hope you had dinner." his voice was calm.
Arissa did not answer. Nicklaus turned fully to her, "Why didn’t you have dinner?" his voice was a bit hard.
"I wasn’t hungry," she rubbed on her stomach, "But I think I would be able to let a few things sink in now," she lied, letting it off that she had been waiting for his arrival.
His voice was already hard and she doesn’t want his expression to tag along. That would only happen if he should know she had waited up for him.
Nicklaus’s expression softened. "You waited up, didn’t you?" he called out her lie.
Arissa turned red at the truth. She zipped her lips and just walked towards him. Standing before him, she stood on her tiptoe before stealing a kiss from his cheek.
She giggled and her inside calmed down a bit. Nicklaus froze and thanks to the kiss, he saw underneath the strong facade she used in hiding it all.
"I_"
"You are frightened," he told her, wrapping her into his arms. He remembered Alfred’s visit today and his expression turned shades darker and unconsciously, his hold on her waist tightened.
Arissa took in a deep breath when he held her so tight. His care was heartwarming but his reaction was scary. Did something happen to make him this concerned?
Nicklaus’s fear grew when she just stayed quiet. His hand caressed her face. "Did something or someone frightened you?" he asked in a more gentle tune.
He calmed down with the fact she was in his arms and whoever dared would burn along with the world. She has helped them a lot, it’s now her turn to receive all the help she deserves from the next person.
Arissa shook her head. "It was just a little nightmare. I think I’m fine now," she hugged him and pressed her ear on his chest, "Would it be possible for us to spend the night together?"
Nicklaus froze.
She placed her chin on his chest and looked up at him, "I just want someone around until I fall asleep. Is it possible for you to help me with that?"
’She wants me around?’
Arissa needed his presence alone. That way, she won’t have to fear about something happening to him. "It would be just for a few minutes. You are free to leave the moment I shut my eyes," she coaxes him.
Nicklaus was a bit surprised by her request. She keeps on giving him mixed signals. This minute she pulls out the calm and okay vibe. In the next minute, she no longer wants to see him.
She was playing a game with him. A game that left him confused. He loves and enjoys the game until she becomes difficult to figure out.
Right now, her offer was tempting. He had always wished for it, for a night he would sleep by her side and now it offered itself to him, his tongue couldn’t speak again.
