Beatrice stared at her husband with a weak smile, wondering what she did to deserve a man as patient, loving, and as kind as he is.
He had always made sure to be there for her, even at moments she doesn’t need him, he made sure to be around her so if perhaps she accidentally slack or fall, he would be right behind her to cheer her back on her feet again.
She would thank God for him - Stephen - her husband. God giving her a man like him maybe was already so much grace, mercy, and love from him - God - and that was why he took her daughter as a trade for the world’s best husband.
People said marriage was hard and was no bed of roses but believe her, her life with Stephan was more sweet and comfortable than lying on a bed of roses.
Yet now, reminiscing all, the good Stephen did for her, her heart shattered into a million pieces as she realized she was about to leave him shattered. She knew he was acting all tough but she saw through that encouraging smile he gave to her.
Behind that encouraging smile was a man about to break down from fear, heartbreak, and tears. She smiled, funny how once, she had seen his diary from high school.
There, he wrote about his first love. The name of the girl wasn’t included but whoever that girl was, the girl would be extremely lucky to have someone like Stephen beside her.
She wasn’t that first love of his and yet, he treats her this way which makes her imagine how extreme he can go for that lady.
She smiled again, a sad one.
Stephen took her hand in his before wrapping her bony palm with his. He placed a gentle kiss on it as he smiled back at her to encourage her.
Yes, he has to encourage her. They still have a lot to do, a lot of things to do with their daughter, and a lot of memorial places to visit with her after finding her. He also wasn’t ready. He can’t bear the blow of staying on earth without her so, God has to do something.
He knew she would leave him soon. He could feel it but denying it to himself felt good. If she could survive last night when he came in with her, he was sure she would survive a few more days but...then what?
Would he still tell her to hold on a little before he finds their daughter? Would he just break her heart again as he had always done?
He sighed, pushing those thoughts to the back of his mind. He knows his Beatrice, she’s a strong woman and right now he would need her to show him how strong she can be. She needs to survive this and not give him some weak smile like all hope is lost.
"Thank_"
Stephan stopped her from speaking as he placed his hand on his lips, indicating that she shouldn’t talk yet.
"Save your strength, let the medicines work," Stephan told her in a shaking voice as he also wished the medicine would help permanently.
Beatrice smiled again.
"You have to be strong, for me. Tell the angels to wait and that we still have a lot of things to do. Tell God, beg him, tell him you have to see our daughter and spend time with her before_"
"Stephen," Beatrice cut him off in a weak voice and a weak smile, "I have to die to speak to God," she whispered trying to be loud.
"No, you won’t. Don’t say that," Stephen refused her words in pure horror, "God let you pass the night even when I lost all hope. That alone, is enough for you to believe him. I want you to pray with me, that was what I meant about talking to the angels and God. You don’t have to be dead first to talk to God, Trice, get yourself together and believe in him once more," he pleaded with her hastily as his tears left his eyes.
Beatrice smiled, "I can’t do what you are asking me to, Stephen, He turned his back on us our_"
"No, he never turned his back on us, he loves us and wants us to acknowledge him," Stephen explained patiently as his hand wrapping hers trembled, "God would listen to you, Beatrice, if you speak to him,"
Beatrice weakly shut her eyes before opening them again, "Do I need to speak to him?" she asked, "Wasn’t he the same one who claimed he knows the hearts of men? Why can’t he help us without us asking?" she argued further in a tiny weak voice.
"Yes, he said that. He sure knows our wants but he was still the same person who said we should ask and it would be given. Knowing our heart doesn’t mean he doesn’t want us to pray to him," he refused to back down, "Beatrice, please who knows, he might listen faster. The prayer of two accends faster," his tears rushed out and he shifted closer to her and bury his face on his fist that protected her palm, "He would answer us," he choked out hopefully as he had successfully been broken without repair.
"Ah_" Beatrice breathed from her lips, "You have been praying throughout the years but he said nothing," she added one more reason she wouldn’t pray, "I only needed my daughter_" she coughed, more blood staining her hospital gown.
Stephen was heartbroken when he saw her cough that way. At times, he also had doubts about God - maybe God refused to answer him for reasons best known to him but he believed he would answer Beatrice.
Stephan has known Beatrice for more than thirty-five years and all these years, she has been spotless, she was without sin if you ask him so perhaps God would answer her when she speaks to him.
He was also tired of these sufferings. The only thing keeping him sane and alive was her - Beatrice - so, if God desires to take her, he wasn’t sure what he would do as he could already foresee himself tur suicidal if that happens. So, if God truly loves him as he says, he begs God to help him find their daughter as he knew Beatrice would have peace of mind when that happens, and that alone, that peace can be able to miraculously wash this cancer away.
There’s nothing God cannot do and Stephen strongly holds on that faith.
Beatrice bit her lower lips from pain when she saw Stephen cry that way and without hesitation, she accepted, "Let’s pray," she uttered those words for the first time in a long time.
