His Toxic Addiction -
Chapter 157: Deal.
Chapter 157: Deal.
"Why do you have that look?" Nicklaus passed her a side glance before turning back to the road.
After the kiss, he had been watching her emotions even while driving, and her countenance changes each second.
Arissa relaxed in her seat, "I’m tired," she answered truthfully, "What were you saying concerning Mr. Adams?" she turned to him with expectations.
He haven’t called her since that auction and that was the same period Nicklaus warned her about him but still, she had tried to call him. Her calls kept on going over to his voice note and she left countless messages there which have been unanswered to date. It was surprising and even if he wasn’t able to get in touch with the Knewman couples, he would have at least let her know while they look for other means possible than to keep her waiting in the dark.
Also, for the documents to send her father to jail, he hasn’t sent her the remaining one and that’s the only document that would send her father to life imprisonment.
The rest of the documents she have seemed useless to her because, with the rate of his corrupted power, he might buy the judge as so far from what she already knows, he already has seventy-five percent of the law on his palm and all of these slowed down her plans.
Hearing her question, Nicklaus’s hand on the steering wheel tightened as he locked all emotions away. He was about to face her with the truth and who knows, he would have to start from scratch again to keep her calm around him.
Having all those thoughts, he decided not to risk their relationship. Maybe when he comes back, he would tell her everything.
"It was nothing serious. I only wanted to keep an eye on him," he kept his voice casual to lessen or take away her doubt.
Arissa turned to him, "Why do you have to do that?" suspicion grew in her eyes, "Has he been working with my father all this while?" she asked with a hard voice as her expression turned fierce.
"No," Nicklaus answered immediately, "I just don’t trust him," he put in to soften her emotions but the reverse was the case as she only thinned her lips, her face painted with the saying that she doesn’t believe him.
"Look_"
"You once said I should be wary of him,"
"Yes," Nicklaus affirmed.
Arissa’s face turned confused, "Wasn’t working with my father the reason?"
When he said that to her, she never thought about it. She had thought Nicklaus was just blabbing so he could feed his ego with his dominance but that wasn’t enough reason to follow Mr. Adams around. There was something more and Arissa was sure of it.
Nicklaus kept shut as he did not reply to her claim nor did his expression gave him out as now, he was back to his signature indifferent poker face which only helped to strengthen Arissa’s suspicion.
"Talk to me, Nicklaus, does he still work with my father?" she asked him as little panic grew in her heart. If he was still working with her father, then she was as good as doomed.
The fact alone he called Jocelyn that day already shows he could track Adele down whenever he wishes and if he was working with her father and just tricked her all these while...
She tried not to complete her thinking and her blood turned chilled as cold sweat ran down her vein. Her face became visibly terrified as she connected the dots.
Truly, Mr. Adams has been working with my father while he manipulated me into believing him if not, why can’t he provide that document? Why were Adele’s parents at the auction and as smart as he was, why wasn’t he able to spot them until Collins did? She questioned herself.
Nicklaus turned to Arissa and the car came to a sudden halt, "Arissa," he called her name as fear grew in his heart for the first time in many years.
"Adele," Arissa muttered to herself, "The nightmare," her tears dropped, "The documents," she continued muttering as she stared ahead frozen like she just saw a ghost. Only her lips moved.
She was like a robot right now which surprised Nicklaus. He knew she was mentally exhausted but he never thought it was up to this rate where she would break down on little shit like this. He understands her viewpoint but it wasn’t enough for her to break down this way.
Mr. Adams not being by her side against her father isn’t enough reason for her to break down this way. Shit! It was scary.
Looking behind him, more cars would get to him soon so to spend time with her with no deterrent, he drove to the closest side of the road before taking off his seatbelt.
"Arissa," he kept a hand on her shoulder, "Look at me," he urged her as he rubbed her shoulder soothingly trying to cajole her and when she did not react, he continued, "Arissa, listen here,"
He tried to pull her into his arms but she violently pulled away. Well, he had expected that but he never expected her next question - not after seeing her breakdown that way.
She used the back of her palm to clean her tears and then, she asked, "What other information do you have?" Her tone was icy cold and sternly dominant which made Nicklaus finally let out a breath of relief.
He would have gladly told her all he knew but at that moment, he remembered something so, he said, "I know more than you can imagine but_" he paused and this got Arissa’s attention because she sharply turned to him.
Her right brow lifted, "But?"
"We would first have to make our marriage work before I disclose any information to you," his tune was serious which made Arissa frown.
"No,"
Nicklaus chuckled, glad her real self was back. Though he doesn’t all round like her stubborn self, he preferred them over her breakdown self. Shit, she scared him back there.
"No, what? I have all the resources and the choice is yours to either make use of it as my wife or to let go. Think wisely, this is a nice offer I’m giving to you," he negotiated.
Arissa’s jaw dropped, "Nick,"
"Hmm," he got back on the road again.
Arissa took in a deep breath, "I hope you don’t lie to me," she forewarned him.
It was Nicklaus’s turn to get caught off guard as his face dropped as if slapped, "Why do you think I would lie to you?" he slammed at her sternly. Though she was just making sure, he still felt insulted by the question.
"Better," Arissa said in a grave tune. For Mr. Adams to waste her time this way, she would use the sweat and emotions he toiled with to make him pay, and let’s not forget, she almost died from an arrow all thanks to him.
"And?" Nicklaus turned to her, staring into her eyes enormously.
"If we do this, it doesn’t affect our divorce right?" she asked staring into his eyes. She needs to know what she was getting into. Thought there would be no feeling between them, she can’t just jump in.
"It surely won’t. I’m no charmer in the heart and again, we won’t do feelings. Our feeling would end only on lust," he assured her before turning back to the road.
He wasn’t sure about what he said especially with how his heart slammed his ribcage but he have to say that and get her into the deal of making them work first before other things.
Arissa turned away from him to her glass, "Deal," she accepted.
It won’t be a hard task. The moment she get what she wants, she would back off....or, so she thought.
