Chapter 127: If Possible, Live Apart.
"Son?" Mrs. Wyatt called in surprise as she opened the study door. She just thought about passing by and when she saw the lights on, it tore her heart.
She wish one day, he would be alright again. She prays it won’t be too late when he finds that happiness, she prays to be here the day he would smile again.
With a heavy heart, she walked towards Nicklaus, "It’s late. Finish those tomorrow, you have to sleep,"
Nicklaus raised his face from his laptop, "I really can’t sleep,"
Mrs. Wyatt shake her head in disagreement, "You have to sleep, son, it’s almost four am," she pleaded with him.
Nicklaus looked at his mother standing before his table and with a low sigh, he started back at his laptop again, "I just can’t sleep, the nightmares seem to have multiplied,"
Mrs Wyatt’s brows furrowed, calmly she walked closer to him and stood beside him, "Why? Are your pills finished?" she asked worriedly.
Nicklaus smiled bitterly as he restrained himself from breaking down again, "Mother," his voice was low but Mrs Wyatt heard it perfectly, "We would get divorced soon," he informed his mother.
"Nicklaus?"
Nicklaus turned fully to face his mother, "We can’t make it work, it’s not possible. For the benefits, that’s a piece of cake. I can take care of it," he said.
Mrs. Wyatt’s eyes widened, "Why do you decide on that?" she asked him, staring softly at him.
Nicklaus turned away from her and focused on the wall, "We both agreed to this, it would be best for us,"
Mrs. Wyatt frowned, "What do you mean you both agreed to that? Why would you agree to the divorce, knowing what it would cost you?"
Nicklaus turned to his mother, "I’d secure the position in a month," he assured her.
"Oh! So you know you haven’t secured the position yet and you want to get a divorce! Are you ever thinking?" she scolded him, "I thought the both of you were okay, why the sudden divorce?"
Nicklaus ran his hand through his hair as he gulped. This woman was akin to a wingless dragon when stepped on.
Nicklaus tapped his left foot on the floor as he pondered on what happened earlier between him and Arissa.
"She brought up the offer," he defended himself.
Mrs. Wyatt’s brows tightened from anger, "Then make her stay,"
"I don’t want her anymore," Nicklaus snapped as he stood up from his seat with all annoyance, "I can’t endure this,"
"Nicklaus, you know you can’t decide on this," she straightened him up in a stern voice.
"I can decide to have another woman," he bragged, "I can get married this second to a woman who would see me and not some selfish bitch you brought to me as a wife," he unleashed, and Mrs. Wyatt’s eyes widened from outbursts.
"What happened?" Mrs. Wyatt questioned in surprise. Nicklaus doesn’t say many words like this especially not with emotions.
He rarely shows emotions and hardly says many words. He had always been a man of few words but now, her son just said more than expected with raging emotions.
What happened between them?
"Son," Mrs. Wyatt moved towards him to hold him but Nicklaus just stepped away and glared at her, "You can talk to me," she pressured him.
Even if the way he kept on pushing her away hurt her, she won’t stop trying. She also wants to one day know her son like the back of her palm like every mother does.
She also wants to spend some quality good times with him. She doesn’t know if it’s too much but she won’t stop praying to the heavens for a change in his life.
"Just leave," he ordered before turning his back on her.
Other mothers would gasp or tell if they were told this from a child of theirs but not Mrs. Waytt. She’s used to this side of him so, sending her away was the best he could do for her.
"Son? Just talk to me," she pleaded with hope as she walked towards him.
Two steps away, Nicklaus stepped further away from her. Mrs. Wyatt was neither frustrated nor angry as she tried to keep on persuading him to speak up.
She knows Nicklaus. Her son won’t take the rash decision when he knows what’s at stake.
"I just don’t want to be with Arissa anymore," he snapped at Mrs Wyatt. Saying this hurt him but if it would make her selfish self happy, then she can have her way.
Mrs. Wyatt shakes her head in denial, "You can’t have your way on this, Nicklaus. Be with Arissa for at least a year. When the position is solid, I’d join in processing the divorce letters," she promised.
"And that’s what I’m saying. We’ve helped the Lincolns already, at due time we would get the benefits but for now, I want a new woman as a wife," he explained.
Mrs Wyatt sighed, "Nicklaus no. The board members already know Arissa as your wife. You can’t just switch partners,"
"Mother_"
"Nicklaus, if you divorce Arissa, I would personally terminate every deal you have with the higher-ups," she promised in fury as she was fed up with his attitude.
Nicklaus scoffed, "You won’t dare," he challenged.
Mrs. Wyatt smiled, "No matter the love I have for you, if this is what would straighten you up, then I would do it. The higher-ups only want a wife from you to make sure you are responsible. Divorcing Arissa under just a month and a week shows your deep irresponsibility,"
She paused.
Nicklaus faced her with her pause. Achieving what she wanted - all of his attention, she continued,
"No matter what happens, cope with her if possible, live apart," she suggested, "For your sake, the contract would be reduced to just a year and after that, I promise it would all be over,"
Nicklaus’s face was poker while she said all of this. Without blinking, he listened to her. Moving to him, Mrs. Wyatt’s heart trembled.
Right now, she felt like the worst mother but she has to do it. She wants him to have all the extended conditions she and her husband could give to him now then maybe, if he ever wants to look for his mother in any part of the world, it would be possible.
"Son," she called lowly before placing her hand on his wrist, "I also wish you do not have to feel this way but please, if you do not want to do this for yourself, do it for me. It’s my first time asking you to do something," she hinted before taking a sniff in.
"I know you don’t care about me_"
"I care about you," Nicklaus cut her off.
He might not know what love is called, but he cares about the woman presently standing before him and always want to see her happy and smiling.
"I’d postponed the divorce," he promised.
Surprising Mrs. Wyatt, he stepped closer to her before enveloping her in a hug.
