Chapter 292: The Only Regret
At Vozton City...
Enzo and Alice arrived at the place where Dominique and his family lived.
"Let’s check in first. After that, we can eat our lunch and go around the city," Alice suggested.
She would grab this opportunity to win Enzo’s trust once again. She wanted to have a fresh start with him. She just hoped Enzo would give her another chance to fix their relationship.
"Okay. But I want to go to the Smith Mansion. Do you know the place?" Enzo asked her as he took her luggage.
"Yes. I have the address here. Don’t worry. I didn’t tell my Boss that you went here." Alice was referring to Dominique.
Enzo nodded. "Good. Please keep this from him. I don’t want him to know that I am investigating his background and origin."
"I promise, I won’t tell him. I’m on your side. I tagged along with you not because I’m following his order. I’m here because I want to be with you," Alice admitted, reassuring Enzo.
Enzo fell silent upon hearing. He was supposed to feel something but strangely, his heart didn’t react just like how he used to before.
To ease the awkwardness, he just smiled at her. "Thank you, Alice. Now, let’s proceed to the front desk."
Alice just followed him from behind.
"Miss, reservation for Enzo Williams," Enzo inquired, handing his identification card to the hotel staff.
"Yes. Sir. Here are your keycards. Your rooms are on the fourth floor."
Alice frowned when she heard that. "Did you book two rooms?" She asked him in disbelief.
Enzo nodded. "Yes, I did. Why?"
"There is no need for that. We can share one room," Alice insisted.
"Here, Miss. Take this keycard. We won’t be utilizing this room. Refund us." She surrendered her keycard to the hotel staff.
The hotel staff just smiled awkwardly as she darted her gaze back and forth between Enzo and Alice.
"I’m sorry, Miss. But we can’t get a refund. The cancellation of the room should have been made a day before your check-in so that we can refund your payment," she said, explaining the hotel’s regulation.
Enzo just sighed and took the keycard back. "Alice. You should keep this room. I’ll use the other room."
Alice felt disheartened upon hearing that. She could feel that Enzo had started to change. If this was the old Enzo, he would be the one to suggest they share the room.
After they settled in their respective rooms, Enzo contacted the fire station that responded when the Smith Mansion was burned into ashes.
"Hello, Is Fire Marshall Ruben Gonzales there? Can I talk to him? I’m Enzo Williams, the one who set an appointment with him today."
"Mr. Williams, Fire Marshall Gonzales is still in the meeting. You can proceed here to our station directly to meet him. Your appointment with him is scheduled at 2:00 pm." The admin staff responded to Enzo’s query.
"Alright. Noted on this. Thank you." Enzo hung up the phone. He felt a little bit tense, bracing himself for what he would discover in this investigation.
’Is my father really involved in this tragedy?’ Enzo thought, taking a deep sigh.
He was worried that his sister wouldn’t be able to handle the truth.
’How I wish Dominique told me a lie. It will be hard for us to accept if we find out that our father did that cruel thing to his family.’
It did not take long before Enzo invited Alice for lunch. They chatted for an hour before he decided to go to the fire station first.
At exactly 2:00 pm, Enzo and Alice met the Fire Marshall who was assigned to investigate the cause of the fire in the Smith Mansion.
"Welcome, Mr. Williams. I’m Fire Marshall Gonzales. It’s my pleasure to finally meet you." The middle-aged man greeted him with hospitality.
"Same here, Mr. Gonzales. By the way, this is my friend, Alice. We traveled here together."
Alice politely smiled at the Fire Marshall. He invited them to sit down inside his office.
"By the way, how are you related to Dominique? Is he fine? It’s been so long since the last time I saw him. Is he living well?" Fire Marshall Gonzales asked them curiously.
"He is our friend. Don’t worry about him. He is living well in York City. He is a successful businessman now," Alice butted in.
Mr. Gonzales nodded, feeling glad to hear that.
"Actually, I am wondering why you contacted me, asking me about the fire that happened a long time ago. In fact, this case is something I will never forget." Mr. Gonzales started to share his thoughts with them.
He clicked his tongue and shook his head helplessly. "I felt sorry for Dominique at that time. I know it was so hard for him. He was the only survivor... and he lost his family." His tone was laced with sorrow.
Enzo and Alice exchanged glances with one another.
"What is the result of your investigation regarding the fire?" Enzo asked him expectantly.
Fire Marshall Gonzales placed the documents in front of the table. It contained photos of the aftermath of the fire.
"It was Arson. Someone deliberately burned the Smith Mansion. The arsonist surrendered three days later. And the case was closed."
"How about Dominique’s family? What is the cause of their deaths? How about Dominique’s statement?" Enzo bombarded him with so many questions.
Mr. Gonzales shook his head. "Dominique was too young to handle the pain of losing his family. He was traumatized. He couldn’t give the police a clear statement. However, I could still remember how the young Dominique mumbled the words ’Kill Albert’ so many times while he was in the hospital.
"He became violent as if he was possessed. That was the reason he was sent to the mental facility for his treatment. But he escaped two years later. After that, we didn’t hear any news about him."
Enzo clenched his fists when he heard that. Everything he said aligned with Dominique’s statement when he revealed the truth to him.
’No, this can’t be. Dominique is not lying.’ Enzo turned pale.
The fire marshall spoke again. "Regarding the cause of death of his family... it wasn’t investigated properly. Their bodies didn’t undergo an autopsy. They were cremated right away."
"In fact, I found it very suspicious at that time. But this is out of our jurisdiction. The police department was the one handling the case. Our task is only to investigate the cause of the fire." Mr. Gonzales explained to them.
"So, do you think... Aside from Arson, there is another foul play in the deaths of Dominique’s family. Did someone bribe the police officers investigating the case?" Enzo asked Fire Marshall Gonzales.
The middle-aged man fell silent for a moment. He was contemplating whether to share his honest opinion or not. The case happened a long time ago. And Dominique Smith didn’t request for a reinvestigation.
"Do you want to hear my honest opinion?" Fire Marshall Gonzales asked Enzo with a serious expression on his face.
"Yes. Tell me your honest opinion about this." He urged him.
Fire Marshall Gonzales took a deep sigh, staring at the fire investigation document.
"Mr. Williams... I have one regret at that time... I kept my silence... I never raised the possibility to the police... that the Smith Family had been murdered before the fire broke out. I never questioned their quick investigation..."
Hearing those words, the truth hit Enzo hard!
