Chapter 265: Her Feelings

Alice noticed the changes in Enzo’s treatment of her. For the past few days, Enzo had been quiet in the house.

Whenever she would arrive home, Enzo was already sleeping. And before going to work, Enzo didn’t accompany her for breakfast.

Alice had been wondering why Enzo was giving her cold treatment lately. Surprisingly, she was bothered by this. She was used to his caring and sweet sides.

So today, she decided to confront him.

"Enzo, can we talk for a moment?" Alice asked Enzo who was cooking in the kitchen.

Enzo stopped what he was doing and followed Alice to the living room.

"Is there something wrong?" Alice looked at him worriedly. "Are you upset with me? What have I done wrong?"

Aside from being strangely quiet, Alice was also puzzled as to why Enzo had been no longer intimate with her lately. She noticed that Enzo had been distancing himself even though they were sleeping in the same bed.

She also caught him one time– Enzo leaving the bedroom and staying in the living room to continue his sleep. For some unknown reason, Alice longed for his touch and kisses. And it wasn’t normal anymore.

Meanwhile, Enzo stared at her, meeting her gaze. He hesitated for a moment before speaking.

"Alice. Do you really love me?" Enzo looked very serious when he asked that question.

Alice frowned upon hearing that. "What is this all about? Why? Are you thinking I am cheating on you?"

"No. It’s not that. I just feel like... you are hiding something from me. And your feelings are not genuine," Enzo said frankly.

Alice was caught off guard by Enzo’s last remarks. She didn’t know what made him doubt her.

"What do you mean? Do you think I’m just faking it? For five years?" Alice asked him in disbelief.

Enzo smiled faintly. "I think I’ll be honest with you... since I owe you my life."

"I understand now... why you kept on rejecting my marriage proposal. I saw you with Dominique Smith. I already knew that you were working for him and... you have the task of monitoring me. For you... I am just a mission you have to fulfill."

Alice was shocked when she found out that Enzo had already learned of her connection with Dominique. She didn’t know how to explain herself. She was caught in the act.

"Alice, I think... we should stop this. Stop pretending that you care about me. That you love me. Let’s break up." Enzo had conditioned himself for the past few days for this confrontation.

Finally, he mustered up his courage to end things between Alice and him. Of course, he was still hurting because, for the past few years, he had loved her for real.

Enzo stood up and was about to leave when Alice suddenly grabbed his elbow thus stopping him.

"Enzo, wait. Let me explain!" She begged as she held him tightly.

She thought she would be willing to break up with him. But now, she was hesitant to do it.

Enzo clenched his fists. He was also confused about his feelings right now.

Without further ado, Alice hugged Enzo from behind.

"I’ll prove it. My feelings for you are genuine. If you want to marry me... then let’s do it! I will marry you!" Alice didn’t know why but she just felt the need to make him stay by her side.

’Am I doing this for my mission or I just don’t want to break up with him? I am already used to being with him... spending time and living with him.’ Alice couldn’t figure out what she truly wanted.

On the other hand, Enzo was taken aback by her sudden proposal. He couldn’t believe that Alice told him that she would marry him. He just stood there, trying to process her words.

"Enzo, Listen to me. Please. I can explain it. Dominique Smith is not an enemy. He is not a bad guy. He just wanted to protect you against the enemy who wanted to kill you."

"Yes. At first, I did it for my mission. But after spending more time with you... I think I’ve developed real feelings for you. My feelings for you are genuine." Alice tried to convince him. She couldn’t afford to lose Enzo right now.

"The reason I am hesitant to marry you is because of this... my secret identity. I knew it. Once you find out, you will start doubting me."

Enzo didn’t know what to feel right now. "Then why didn’t you tell me the truth? If you truly care for me then you should have confessed to me."

"All this time... I question myself. What am I lacking? Why can’t you accept my proposal? Don’t you want to be with me? Grow old with me?"

"And that’s when I realized... that maybe... you don’t really love me. I’m just part of your duty. And your loyalty will always be with Dominique. Not me." Every word he said was like a dagger hitting his heart. He couldn’t hide his bitterness in his eyes.

"I can no longer pretend that we are a couple in love. Everything about us is a lie. Let’s stop seeing each other, Alice. Let’s break up now." Enzo needed time and space for his heartbreak to heal.

His trust was already broken. Alice couldn’t fix it easily.

With a determined look on his face, Enzo removed her hands that were wrapped around his body. Then he walked away, leaving Alice behind.

Alice stood frozen in her spot. She couldn’t believe that this was happening. She always took him for granted. She thought she never loved him for real. But why? Why was she hurting right now?

Who would have thought that breaking up with Enzo would affect her like this? Her heart tightened as if she was being suffocated right now.

Her gaze was still fixed in the direction where Enzo had walked away. ’Why didn’t I realize it sooner? I don’t want to end things with him. I don’t want him to leave.’ Her tears started to fall from the corners of her eyes.

At that certain moment, Alice found out that she had fallen in love with Enzo for real.
