Chapter 97: The Lady
Chapter Ninety-Seven – The Lady
(FLASHBACK)
(Black Claws Kingdom – Fifteen Years Ago)
The walls, painted in yellow and maroon, spanned through the whole Kingdom, enclosing the great Kingdom.
There were smaller shorter walls that divided the werewolf packs but at the center was Black Claws capital, the only pack that had Lycans. It was a quiet day.
But then a shrilling scream destroyed the peace of the inner palace.
A three year old, long black hair, pretty hazel eyes and gentle features was running fiercely in the halls, some maids chased after him.
The boy barged in a class where a five year old practiced calligraphy with an older man. The older man turned to the three year old. "Prince Sorren, you shouldn’t be here—"
But the boy ran in, just as the maids joined him and the class became a field of racers chasing after the Prince Sorren.
He ran to the five year old, hiding at his back.
The maids got to the five year old, panting. "P-Prince Stefan, please... tell him to return Luna Queen’s rose water pot. She needs it right now."
They looked miserable even if they’d been running for only an hour.
Another maid tried coming close but Prince Stefan blocked her, turning to his younger brother. "Where is it?"
Prince Sorren had a small pout on his face, "I-It finished."
"What?!" The maids cried, holding their hair. "W-We can’t tell the Luna Queen that. She’d kill us!"
The old man frowned at the disruption in his class, he held a cane. "Well, young ladies, Prince Sorren, you’ve gotten your reply. Leave my class—"
"Prince Sorren, did you really finish all of them?" a maid asked hopefully. "It’s hard to extract rose water, you see."
"I used it on my plant! It’s finished!" Prince Sorren yelled, running out of the class again.
"Maybe he has some left!" a maid chased after him and the rest followed, continuing the chase again. Prince Stefan could only chuckle before continuing his class.
By afternoon, the palace had returned to it’s peaceful at atmosphere but trouble still stirred in a little body.
Sneaking out of the palace, Prince Sorren held a cup. He bounced out confidently. "I’d get my own rose water!"
The forest in front of him was known to be home to many flowers and plants. The Prince had seen the maids go in and return with plant water for his mother and the Queen.
He had his cup tightly. No one would get some for him and his plant so he’d do it himself. The last thing a Prince like him should be was a burden.
But he began having second thoughts when he had gone a mile into the forest but there was no sign of flowers. In fact, it seemed they had been cut off.
He heard the sounds of shears and his eyes widened. The flowers were actually being cut off! He hurried to the sound.
The forest wasn’t exclusive to Black Claws but since it’s walls surrounded it, but with a passable entrance, anyone who came in usually dropped by the King to pay respects.
It wasn’t an ironclad rule but many do this to also gain invitation into the palace and receive a guest’s treatment.
The little prince frowned. So who was this lady barging in without making prior greeting and then cutting the flowers?
"Hey!" he stomped his feet as she saw the back of the lady. "You shouldn’t do that!"
Slowly, the armor cladded lady turned to the small boy. Her bright green eyes were the most prominent of her features, but they looked sad.
Seeing a sword by her side, wearing an armor with an emblem he feared, Prince Sorren slowly stepped back, losing his guts. "Liberation Squad! Y-You shouldn’t cut..."
The lady only stared at him. Sorren didn’t make eye contact, he noticed her come close and tried running but she was in front of him already.
"Ah! Don’t touch me!" he raised his hand over his face.
But then he felt a soft hand on his head.
"What a beautiful child." The lady made a small smile.
Prince Sorren gazed into the lady’s eyes, noticing the darkness rearing inside. Her demeanor reminded him of his mother. Was she a mother?
"You shouldn’t cut flowers." he scolded. "I need them."
The lady walked back to where she had been. Sorren held back the hand that held the shears. "Don’t cut them."
"They are medicinal." The lady said shoving him away.
The Prince fell back, hitting his back on the ground. His eyes began to water. Was the lady sick? Was that why she needed the plants? But then, did she need to take all!
"Mommy! Brother! Mommy!" he began crying, out of pain from his fall and the fact that the flowers were mercilessly being taken from their roots.
The lady turned to the crying child, she looked regretful. "I’m sorry, beautiful one but my lovely daughter needs this. I can’t face her without bringing help. I’m really sorry."
Prince Sorren’s screams became louder, making the lady frown. At that rate, the child could summon the whole Kingdom. She’d have to console him.
She returned to him, shears in hand. "I’m not taking all the flowers. And by using shears," she raised it up. "It’d grow back again. Okay?"
Prince Sorren’s screams only got louder, making the lady grunt lowly but then her lips parted. "Ah...Ah!!"
The Prince eyes shook as he saw a sword penetrating the lady’s armor. "Zena Zacht! Leave my son alone, bastard!"
The Prince recognized the woman’s voice and ran to her. She held a bloody sword that she drawn out of her victim. A crown was on her head.
"Mommy!" the Prince hugged her, hiding his face in her dress.
The armored lady fell on her knees, holding her stomach. She spat out blood and terror filled her eyes. Her strength drained from her, more rapidly than it should.
"What did you do to me?!" she yelled, grabbing her sword.
"Zena Zacht!" the Luna yelled again.
The lady dropped her sword, falling to the ground.
The Luna glared down at her like a predator. "I would’ve let you return to the liberation squad and warn them to avoid me and my son. But I’d rather kill you!"
On hearing ’kill’, Prince Sorren shuddered. "Mommy, no! I only wanted to take flowers but she cut..."
"She cut you?!" his mother finished before him. Her legs slammed down at the lady. "This liberation squad bastard! Don’t worry Sorren. If you need manure for your plants, we can use this bastard!"
Sorren shuddered again, hiding his face. All he wanted was for the lady to go away so his mother would stop being scary.
"You’d pay for this!" the armored lady groaned, taking out a scroll. "You’d pay!" she threw the scroll to the air.
A bird caught it, flying away.
The Luna raised her hand to the bird. "Zena Zacht!"
The bird slowed down, almost falling but another bird caught the letter and flew away.
"Stupid messenger birds! Even if you call all liberation squads here, my husband would kill them all to protect my son and I!" the Luna shouted.
"How about I call my husba—" the lady’s eyes rolled to a close before she would finish her words.
The Luna scoffed. "I wouldn’t hesitate to cut anyone down to protect my child. Sorren, let’s go. I’d treat your wound."
Sorren was carried by his mother. He looked back at the dead lady, tears brimming in his eyes. Was this his fault?
