Chapter Ninety-Six – Hard To Get

It finally got to evening. Stefan tapped on the table impatiently, waiting for the day to finally be over. His eyes went to the lady laid on Sorren.

"Why would it be Zara?!" he groaned for the hundredth time.

Sorren frowned. "Take this as a chance to let go of the trauma she caused you."

His brother didn’t appreciate the joke so Sorren added. "We don’t know what she was asking the werewolfess also but she probably noticed she wasn’t supposed to be there. It’s your responsibility to handle it for your mate."

Stefan’s shoulder drooped. He would have avoided Zara if Laurel hadn’t take that girl.

Zara stirred awake, her hand went to her head as she felt it would split open. What had attacked her, a Delta to High Moon Kingdom? She tried to remember.

If it wasn’t a rogue or she would have caught it’s pungent scent first. Then a face came to her mind. A pretty face.

She sprang up from where she laid, almost hitting Sorren.

"So she’s up. Handle this." Sorren said to Stefan, leaving. "And sorry for hitting you, young lady. Excuse me."

Zara held unto him demandingly. He was the one. Her lips parted. "P-Pretty Princess."

Sorren raised a brow. What did she just call him? And what was with the disturbing smile on her face.

Her hand was pulled away from Sorren. Zara turned to the man sitting by her. Her hands went to her cheeks.

"Ara! Alpha Stefan?" She turned back to the pretty one. "So, is this that Sorren—"

"No." Stefan pulled Sorren protectively. "We need to talk, it has nothing to do with him." He pushed Sorren away.

Sorren had a blank expression as he was pushed away. He sighed, walking off and looking for something to keep him busy. Maybe that Zara was crazy like his brother said.

Zara’s eyes followed Sorren, a wide smile on her face. "That’s definitely Sorren. He’s as pretty as I imagined. You see, hot men are good but pretty ones are better—"

"I don’t care about your fantasies, Zara." Stefan cut her short. "So, what were you doing with the girl? She’s a guest of mine."

"Oh, was she?" Zara became serious. Wasn’t the requirements for guests only three people?

She had seen the young lady that sat on their table, she recognized her, the pretty girl from the inn. Zara really wanted to speak to her.

That day, the girl had no scent. That was really strange.

However, on going to their table when the chaos started, Zara only found another strange girl seated there with no scent as well.

She took the girl outside to talk before being attacked by the pretty Sorren. Zara sighed. "You brought four people?"

Stefan realized what she meant and shook his head. "I met the last one here. It’s complicated."

Zara stared at him intently, before grinning. "It’s fine then. I just got curious when she didn’t seem like someone I knew. No worries."

Was it really only that? Stefan nodded. "Okay."

Zara hurried out, from a door opposite Stefan. The Alpha sighed in relief that she didn’t go towards Sorren.

Unknown to him, Zara followed a short cut back to the other passage. She gleamed wickedly when she sighted him, running his hand in the fountain.

"Sorren!" She called playfully.

She tried hugging him but he moved, and she nearly fell into the fountain. A small frown came to her face. "You’d let me fall? It’d ruin my dress."

"Oh then, I should let you touch me? It would have ruined my clothes too." Sorren replied, not sparing her a glance.

His eyes were on a plant growing under the fountain. He was curious on it’s biology, and why it’s natural habitat was under the fountain.

He barely had time for the clingy female Lycan besides him. And Zara sensed it.

She ran her hand through her hair. "Ah, and I was looking forward to meeting you."

How had she heard about him? Sorren wondered but didn’t try enquiring. He looked from the plant to the sky. "I’d be heading back now. Today was awfully active."

Awfully active? Zara smirked. He was the low energy type? She nodded. "Same. We’d talk tomorrow, right?"

"Get me detailed information on that plant, and I’d indulge you." Sorren requested. "Tomorrow then."

Zara looked into the fountain. "That plant?" she turned to him but he was already gone, she clicked her tongue, "Playing hard to get."

They would stay another day at High Moon Kingdom. Laurel sighed. She had overheard Stefan and Sorren talking about it after she woke from seven hours sleep.

Strangely, all she wanted to do was return to her pack and make sure Stefan agreed that Green Valleys will be a subsidiary pack, or even a village, under Black Claws.

That way, the citizens and the maids could leave in peace. They could no longer take the pack from him as it was registered under High Moon Kingdom.

Her stomach rumbled and she stood up, staring at it accusatorily. She stuffed herself in the ball. Were all that snacks gone?

She looked besides her at the werewolfess who was asleep on the bed. Laurel smiled. The girl must be sleeping peacefully, knowing she was safe from Asher.

Slowly, she left the bed and creeped out of the room. The moon was really high, or perhaps the mountains’ plains were really low.

"That’s why they call here High Moon, huh?" Laurel smiled, moving outside. She noticed Sorren was out there. Was he talking to the horse?

She tried creeping close to him, a mischievous grin coming to her face but then he turned to her.

"Did you sleep well, princess? Imagine my maid sleeping while I had to feed the horse?"

Laurel’s grin fell, she folded her arms. "When we return to Black Claws, I will no longer be your maid. I’d make sure Stefan do as I tell him."

"Such a demanding lady. I pity my brother’s future with you." Sorren rubbed the horse’s mane.

Future with her? Laurel’s cheeks heated up. She brushed it away and fell quiet. Was it okay to bring it up now? The reason her mother died?

She cleared her throat. "I followed you to High Moon Kingdom. You should tell me who killed my mother and why she died. You said you knew."

"Hmm. It happened a long time ago but I still remember."

Laurel raised a brow. Was he there when it happened? He should be really young when it happened. Could she trust his memory? "So who killed my mother?"

"Luna Susan."

The princess frowned. A Luna? "Who is that?"

Sorren turned to her. "My mother."
