Chapter Ninety-Three – A pillar
Zeno turned to Sorren, wearing a deep frown. "I am."
Laurel looked from Sorren to Zeno. There was definitely unspoken tension in the air, though she couldn’t place it.
What’s up with this Lunaria? And bred Lycans? Did he mean forcefully or mates breeding?
Sorren finally looked away from Zeno. "Bred Lycans? I didn’t think they were still around even after the practice stopped."
"Where did you expect them to go to? The practice stopped only fifteen years ago." Zeno looked away from him as well.
It made Laurel exhale that the tension was gone. "So werewolves and Lycans live together in your pack?"
"Those don’t matter where I came from." Zeno turned to them again. "What Asher is doing is wrong."
Laurel raised her hand. "No argument there. He nearly killed me when I saved a werewolf girl from his clutches. He’s crazy—" she stopped when Sorren looked at her.
"Still, your pack, Bloody Moon Pack is currently under the King." Sorren spoke. "You’d put your Alpha in serious trouble if Asher realizes who orchestrated this."
"He’s not my Alpha. Haven’t you heard of Bloody Moon Pack?" Zeno turned to Laurel.
She held his gaze. She should know about them, right? But strangely nothing was forthcoming.
"I don’t know if it was your mother or grandmother, but a Lead Warrior Luna of Green Valleys Kingdom was once part of Bloody Moon."
Laurel’s eyes beamed. That was her mother. Slowly, she began realizing the connection.
"It’s not a pack but a sect. A liberation squad. Lycans and werewolves are part of it." Zeno added.
"So this was all planned by those entities? To kill Asher, a Lycan King?" Sorren raised his voice. That meant Bloody Moon Pack was a spy to the Lycan Kingdom.
But if they were only trying to stop Asher’s practices then that should be okay. It was really conflicting.
Zeno looked down. "No. This was all me. Because of my cousin. But I’ve been told to return."
That must’ve been the message from the hawk. Laurel felt relieved. She must have read of Bloody Moon Pack from her mother’s old letters she usually read as a kid.
She glanced at Sorren and whispered. "What will you do now? Are you going to tell your King—?"
"You think I care what happens to Asher, either?" Sorren cut her short. "It’s rather interesting to have learnt about the Liberation squad. I won’t even tell Stefan."
The Princess nodded in agreement. That one was a goody two shoes sometimes and would inform the King. She noticed a gaze on her and turned back to Zeno.
"Princess." He suddenly called.
Laurel looked around her. Was there any other Princess he was calling? "Y-Yes." Couldn’t he just say what he wanted to say without calling her?
"At our liberation squad, there’s always been an open pillar, the one your mother or grandmother left." Zeno said. "If you ever feel like it, it’d be given to you."
Given to her? A pillar? She will become a member of the Liberation Squad? She wanted to speak but Sorren blocked her with his hands.
"Don’t hope on it. She has her own plans to be there for the werewolves of her pack. Being in the liberation squad would totally defeat those goals."
Laurel looked down.
"Well, I just wanted to let her know. The former pillar’s death came as a shock to the superiors so they left it open, Hoping it wasn’t true. How wonderful it’d be to be I inherited by her daughter." Zeno smiled. "I’m just saying."
That’s a very interesting offer but Laurel knew she’d have to decline. She knew nothing about her mother but now, she was being given opportunity to walk in her footsteps.
From her mother’s letters she had read, the liberation squad surely meant a lot to her. Her mother would also be proud to see her daughter inherit it.
And her mother’s death? Laurel looked at Sorren.
Her mother’s death affected many people and Sorren knew what happened. She’d have to ask him about it later.
"I’d keep that amongst my future options." Laurel chuckled nervously. "But yeah, don’t hope on it."
After that Zeno disappeared into the forest. Laurel waited there till she couldn’t catch his scent anymore.
Strangely, she felt more curious about him since he mentioned her mother and being a bred lycan.
She looked at her hands. Those Lycans she killed were fighting for a good cause, weren’t they?
But she had to kill them because at that point, they weren’t clear on that. That was the nature of war. She noticed Sorren shake his head, she looked up.
"What is it?"
"Look at the dress I gave you. You happily swam in blood while wearing it." He pointed at the blood stains.
She held her cheeks. She already expected him to give her an earful. "I was attacked. I did my best—"
"What do I expect giving a maid such priceless fit."
A maid? Didn’t he just call her a princess now? "Goddess! It’s an accident, okay? It’s not like you wear the dress—"
Sorren turned away, walking back to her hall. Laurel clenched her fists following him. One day, she’d really hit him for how many times he teased her.
As they walked, she wondered if she should bring it up. The explanation on what caused her mother’s death. But perhaps that will be till they got back to the courtyard.
A low growl snapped Laurel from her thoughts. "No, no."
There shouldn’t more! A Lycan in it’s form was before them. Laurel recognized it as the one she made to pass out. Waking up to see the rest dead but have been traumatic for him.
"Look, we don’t need to fight each other. We are after the same..."
Sorren sped to the Lycan and it backed away, intimidated by his aura and the sudden speed he moved with. Sorren turned to Laurel. "You talk with it like it’s listening."
Laurel frowned. "Don’t kill him! He’s only after Asher. He’s part of Zeno’s liberation squad—" blood splashed in her face.
"I keep asking you if you’re stupid, princess." A gullet was thrown on her legs by Sorren. "This is just a rogue Lycan. Not part of Zeno’s whatever. Can’t you perceive his disgusting scent?"
Laurel’s eyes tarried on the gullet, bloody and detached. Not supposed to be out of it’s body. Like the heart that had been in her hand and moved.
She knelt down before the gullet, her lips quivering. "Why did you— It had nothing to do with you... ahhhh!" she began crying.
Sorren wiped his hand on the tree, an indifferent look on his face. He glanced at the Lycan’s body and then at Laurel. Were they friends by any chance?
