Chapter Seventy-Four – Alert

Laurel frowned. She had already made up her mind to stay with the horse. What kind of situation was Sorren putting her in?

Waking up everyday to see his face, her confidence would be washed away before she returned back to the maids who made her feel useful.

"Alright then." Sorren left were he sat and entered a room. "You two, share a room. That’s fine." He closed the door.

Stefan rubbed his face. He surely saw the smirk playing on his brother’s face. "This place is very cold at night."

Laurel frowned. Was he trying to waver her resolve to stay in the stable? "Stay in the room. I’d be in the stables."

The Alpha turned at her. "Did you forget you’re a princess or you really wouldn’t mind?"

She reddened in embarrassment. He was trying to shake her resolve so she’d stay with him, wasn’t he? "Don’t fight it." Elma whispered. Laurel scoffed at her loudly.

Stefan sighed on hearing her scoff. All their conversations always ended like that. "I’d be off to greet the King. Make yourself comfortable."

The princess watched him leave. She should make herself comfortable where?

Sorren hurried out of his room. Laurel blinked and he was gone. These Lycans were still too fast for her eyes.

As she placed her bag to the ground, Sorren sped back, startling her. "Where did you run off to?"

He sat down on a couch with crossed legs. "Stefan was going to see the King, right? With no gift or anything. He’s always so forgetful.’"

"Are you his mother or—" Laurel swallowed her words, just staring down at her bag. There was nothing to do here than wait for tomorrow’s meeting. It will be a long day.

"You’re really irritated today, princess."

Laurel glanced at him and began ranting. "I’m surrounded by Lycans. Do you blame me? My whole senses are alert. And there’s nothing to do to take my mind off it."

She realized herself and calmed down, looking away.

"That’s why I wanted you to be at least Delta ranked. You got close but didn’t break it."

"I’m doing my best, okay!" she raised her voice again. "Do you think I like my situation?" She saw the unbothered look on his face. "But of course, it isn’t your problem."

Sorren smiled. "Exactly, it’s yours. So you should still try to break Delta rank in here, since you have nothing to do."

His behavior was almost heartless. Laurel bent close to her bag. "Must I attend the meeting tomorrow?"

"You must. Not only do I really need you there, but you also have to protect your mate from ambitious females that’d throw themselves at the new lycan Alpha."

Laurel paused, trying to make meaning of what he just said. "You mean you brought me here to guard... why’d I care what he does? He is engaged to Jade, isn’t he?"

And since when was she a werewolfess that would babysit a Lycan Alpha and teach him to make decisions?

"You know they have a problem recently." Sorren said.

"So, I’m the second option?" Laurel clenched her fists. "He can fool around with anyone for all I care. That’d even weaken the mate bond and free me!"

Sorren hummed, thinking of his next words. The princess was taking it harder than he thought. "Alright then. No need to be giddy."

Laurel folded her arms. It had reached the stage where she should punch Sorren for the things he said to her.

She’d get into Delta rank, even Beta rank and maybe Alpha rank, just to give him a taste of his own medicine one day, and in the physical way. She scoffed.

"If it makes you feel better, you were always my first option for my brother."

Laurel slowly turned to him. That was supposed to make her feel better? A smile tugged on her lips.

"You really dislike Jade. Are you really not involved in the problem she had with your brother?" Laurel asked, even if she knew he wasn’t.

Sorren frowned. Why did everyone suspect him? "Stefan and Jade just happened. I searched Jappongi for a vibrant lycan female for Stefan but all were either mated, or uninterested in marrying that far."

Laurel stifled in her laughter, listening attentively. So Sorren wanted his brother with someone so badly he went himself to find a bride? "You really found no one."

"Well." Sorren closed his eyes. "I did but she wanted to marry me, a sixteen year old then, instead. Shameless."

Laurel covered her face as she could barely hold her laughter. She wouldn’t blame the lady. "What about you? Didn’t you tell Sigma to find someone for you?"

There was silence. Silence Laurel anticipated. She picked her bag and headed to the other room.

"The lady meant for me... hasn’t been born."

Laurel slammed the door closed. "Huh?" She turned to him but he looked away. "You want a baby?" she asked.

"N-Not literally." Sorren mumbled.

Laurel shook her head before entering the room. It was spacious enough to fit another bed. She’d have to make another on the ground.

There was no way she was laying with Stefan. She felt Elma trying to whisper something but cut the link. She won’t be doing it. Her stomach rumbled at that point.

She quickly left the room but Sorren had returned to his own room. She shrugged. There was no need to ask for permission when the kitchen was close.

She thought of wearing the charm but decided against it. The kitchen would have only average Lycans and they might not mind her if she told them who she came with.

But the aura of Lycans situated in one place was tougher to handle than Laurel had thought. Still she walked into the kitchen, enthralled by the aroma of the meals.

The cooks paused. Laurel bowed respectfully when they turned to her in unison. "I’m here to collect the meal of Alpha Stefan and his guests."

No one said anything or moved, till the oldest cleared her throat. "Are you a guest as well?"

Laurel slowly nodded. Was she? She was a maid, right?

"Give us a minute." Another cook said.

Laurel stepped back, waiting. They placed six plates in the food cart they were preparing and she heaved a sigh of relief. They had added hers.

The oldest cook handed it to her and she bowed again before leaving. "That had gone smoothly." She sighed.

Elma agreed. "Yeah, they’re all average Lycans though."

On leaving the entrance of the kitchen, a familiar scent flew into Laurel’s nose and her feet froze. The Lycan. Someone was humming, walking towards her.

She kept the food cart on the side and hid behind a pillar. "The Lycan!" The one who burnt Stefan. The one who killed her guards. "That Lycan!" she cried inwardly.
