Chapter Seventy-Three – Surrounded

Laurel opened her eyes when she noticed the carriage slowing down. Her eyes widened, it wasn’t the carriage slowing down that woke her up.

"I-I’m surrounded by Lycans!" she panicked internally.

The aura was heavy and even if she spent the past hours with two, being surrounded by a Kingdom of Lycans had an imposing effect on her.

"The charm, Laurel. The one Jessika gave you to mask your aura." Elma reminded.

Laurel reached for her bag but then noticed Sorren in the carriage. Stefan wasn’t in so they must have switched riders.

"You finally woke up? We’ve arrived."

She could feel that much. She took her hand back and sat in silence. It was already a new day’s morning. How long had she slept? Her eyes darted to the window, male and female Lycans, going about their usual day.

She was probably too far away for them to sense she was werewolf. What would be her fate then? Werewolves and Lycans weren’t friendly with each other.

The carriage stopped and Laurel heard Stefan jumped down. She wanted to look out but held herself.

"Oh my! Alpha Stefan of Black Claws Pack. No way!" Laurel heard a lady scream. "This way! Thank you for coming. The whole Kingdom has been talking about you."

The whole Kingdom? Laurel glanced at Sorren and saw he was as surprised as she was. "That’s good, right?"

"Well, depends on what they’re talking about." Sorren shrugged. "A new pack joining their Kingdom isn’t much of their business to gossip on."

The carriage began moving again, as it did Laurel made eye contact with the lady that spoke and for a second, she thought the lady had the eyes of a predator.

She looked away before the lady did. "Ah, Alpha Stefan, you came with visitors. That’s good, that’s good. I have the perfect room to host you at."

Laurel buried her face with her hand, subtly so Sorren wouldn’t notice she was in fright. The place wasn’t safe.

The first lycan to spot her looked at her like she was prey. She exhaled into her hand and used the warmth to rub her face. She needed to be strong.

She had already gotten this far so there’s no turning back. She didn’t know the way even if she wanted to turn back.

They entered a building, it looked like the quarters of a high ranking official. Was this what the lady meant by room? It was a freaking courtyard.

Laurel snapped her head around looking for a kitchen or another detached room. None!

"Ah!" she slumped back to her seat. "No kitchen. That means they’d be feeding their guests."

"As they should." Sorren raised a brow. "Why not?"

Laurel turned away. Wasn’t she the maid? The poor soul to leave to get the meal? Also, would she be added to the feeding lineup? Or they prefer to starve her to death?

"Nothing. Just prepare yourself, hopefully it’s something you can eat." She forced a smile.

Without food here, she would be really unstable. She had to hunt, using the charm to mask her scent. It might be a survival game from now henceforth.

The lady passed by the window and Laurel froze. The lady stopped, looking into the carriage with an awkward smile in her face. "The kitchen is east to this place."

Why was she telling her? Still Laurel nodded. It was as if the lady could smell that she was a maid. Or was she treating her like one because she was werewolf?

"That was so awkward." Sorren chuckled. "Well, you now know where the kitchen is. You were looking for it."

"I was hoping it was in here!" Laurel cried in her head.

"Yes, I was." She said out loud instead.

Her plans kept on crumbling. The lady just forced her to go to the kitchen to bring the food and be food.

"Laurel, pull yourself together. You’re not food. That lady might be a top ranking lycan to make you feel that way but you’re not a low ranked werewolf yourself!"

Laurel sniffed, agreeing with Elma. "You’re right. I should move around first and see how it goes. This is a Kingdom so I shouldn’t expect powerful Lycans everywhere."

An average lycan had the strength of a warrior wolf. She was almost two ranks tougher than a warrior wolf.

Which meant, she could handle the average Lycan. As long as it was only the average Lycan that came her way.

The door of the carriage suddenly opened at Laurel’s side. She shrieked before composing herself on seeing Stefan. "Sorren is on the side." she told him.

He should open the door for his brother, not her. It was too late to be gentleman. Stefan said nothing then pulled the luggage out. Laurel held unto her bag before he did. He left with some of Sorren’s and his.

"Was that really all you carried?"

Laurel turned to Sorren, he pointed at her bag. "I was hoping you brought some for me." she sassed.

Sorren exhaled. "Well, to save myself the embarrassment of seeing you wear rags, I might share."

He would? Laurel watched him jump down. It wasn’t like the clothes she had were bad, they were apparels from her time as a princess but they didn’t fit her well anymore.

She was half her former size now. The hips she noticed growing had flattened. Only her chest enlarged and not quickly. Thankfully. Or she’d be ogled at by the guards.

Laurel got down the carriage, holding her bag. She looked around the courtyard. It was big, enough to house a small family. Stefan must be the King’s new favorite Alpha to be treated this well.

"Two rooms?"

Laurel hurried inside. Her head went left and right. Why was the courtyard smaller on the inside than it was in the outside. And what did Stefan say? Only two rooms?

Her eyes watered as she looked outside at the horse’s stable, if it had two rooms so she’d share with the horse. "My life keeps condescending to lower heights."

"That’s not a problem." Sorren adjusted his hairpin. "As Alpha, you’d need a room to yourself to think. Laurel can share with me."

"What?" Stefan and Laurel yelled in unison. They looked at each other, then snapped her heads at opposite directions. A smirk played on Sorren’s lips.
