Chapter 72: Rider

Chapter Seventy-Two – Rider

Had something happened to them?

Laurel could only follow the blood trail, hoping Sorren wasn’t killed because his older brother would go mad.

"Sorren?!" She called when she sighted him standing by the cliff. As she got closer she saw his hand stretched out at the edge of the cliff, the rider in his hand.

"What are you doing, Sorren? Do you want to drop him from that height—" Laurel paused her speech.

Sorren’s ears were bleeding, and it won’t stop despite his wolf healing. She crept closer, slowly, sensing Sorren’s primal nature was active.

Could the rider had attacked him? And why?

"Where’s he?"

Laurel’s heartbeat quickened hearing his voice being deeper than usual. Her brain raced to decipher who he spoke of. "Stefan? He chased after some rogues, I think."

"You think?"

Laurel nodded. Was she supposed to chase after him?

"Ahh!!"

"Wait!" Laurel tried to catch him but it was late. Sorren dropped the rider. The man’s body crashed to the edge of a smaller cliff and his spine broke, he hung there, lifeless.

Laurel looked away, trying to be calm. Sorren must’ve a reason for that. She glared at him. "So what’s the reason?"

He gently padded his bleeding ears with the helm of his clothes. "Are you stupid, princess?"

She clenched her fists. "That’s not a response, Sorren..."

"I’d beat that one when I return." Sorren ignored her. "That one who recommended a thief to me as a rider."

A thief? She turned to the dead man, her eyes widening on realization. So the rider was part of the ’rogues’?

Laurel remembered that the girl and wolf she fought didn’t have the scent of rogues nor the tenacity of rogues either.

The rider’s earlier alarm must have been to make Stefan leave, then he’d kill her, a maid, and kidnap Sorren.

If not, why would he even stop the carriage instead of running away on sensing rogues?

Laurel rubbed her face, trying to bring warmth to them. Her body had grown cold and she just wanted to sleep.

"Let’s go, Princess." Sorren began leaving. "Keep up."

Laurel raised a brow. Go where? But he disappeared. Her jaw fell. Did he mean she should keep up with his speed? That was impossible.

She couldn’t even catch the scent of her own mate earlier. "Ah, Elma, Elma, wake up. I need help."

Her wolf scoffed, coming to the surface.

"What about the luggage?" Laurel turned to the carriage. The girl and the wolf were still close. She turned to where Sorren and sped to. Did he sense his brother there?

Laurel shouted, stomping her feet. "Why! This isn’t the kind of adventure I was looking forward to!" They were supposed to drop by some villages and look around.

But due to the rider’s plans, he took a forest path. It would be hard to return and it was already late.

There were shuffling sounds from the forest. Laurel glared at the perpetrator. "Stefan? Ah, now where’s Sorren?"

The Alpha paused. Wasn’t he asleep? "Tell the rider..."

"That one’s dead." Laurel interjected. "Please, you need to find Sorren and let’s move out of here. Even if I’d be the one to pull the carriage, I don’t mind."

What was she saying? Stefan turned when he heard the loud neighing of the horse. Why did it go loose?

"You’re here?" Sorren was atop the horse. " Let’s go then. Princess, get inside."

Her brain lagged before she nodded. She realized that Sorren must have gone to find the horse and not Stefan.

What a caring brother. She rolled her eyes subtly as she jumped inside the carriage.

"The rider was a thief." Sorren said, attaching the harness to the horse. "I can’t ride but I’d manage. I just need to—"

"Get inside. I’d do it.’ Stefan offered.

Sorren smiled. "You really want only your mate and I in there? Alone?"

Stefan lips curved to a frown. What was that supposed to man? "Go back to sleep or something."

"I’m not sleepy. My ears are ringing from the stab even."

He was stabbed? Stefan cursed. "Idiot, that’s more reason to stay inside." He raised his voice.

Sorren quickly dropped the harness. "If you insist. I’d never argue with you about doing less work when I can relax, sitting by a beautiful lady."

A beautiful lady? Stefan held Sorren as he left. "You know what? Ride the carriage. It was your idea anyway."

He knew Sorren was just pulling his strings to make him sit with his mate but Stefan was sure it wouldn’t work as well as his brother hoped.

"When I woke up, she was gone. She might have chased after you instinctively." Sorren said, rubbing the horse’s mane. "She might not hate you as much you want. Sadly."

"Sadly?" Stefan frowned.

"What? Wouldn’t you prefer she hated you? I mean, she’s that enemy’s daughter who unluckily became your mate."

Stefan was quiet. Who would want their mate to hate them? He looked away. "Just ride us to High Moon. If you get tired, tell me—"

"I’m already tired."

Stefan scoffed. "Have fun." He jumped into the carriage. He fell quiet noticing Laurel was resting her head on the window sleepily.

Well, there goes whatever interaction he was making in his head. He leaned on his own window looking out. The carriage began to move.

"Wake up, Laurel!" Sorren shouted.

"Stop that! She’s asleep, we can talk later." Stefan scolded in Sorren’s mind link.

Sorren replied in the link. "Ah, it’s not like I’m trying to be your wingman or anything but how dare she sleep when I’m working? She forgot she’s supposed to be my maid?"

Stefan left the carriage, climbing to the roof. "You’re just bored." He stood atop the moving carriage. "I can’t even see the mountains surrounding High Moon from here."

There were still half a day’s trip away and it was almost evening. How slow had that criminal rider been going?

"You might want to hold unto your mate now." Sorren warned. "And hold her tightly."

"Huh?"

The horse began running faster, and faster. "Sorren, that’s just mean." Stefan smiled, seeing his brother’s eye color changed.

He used his aura to impose on the horse and the poor animal was trying to run from it’s predator. The carriage kept on bumping on stones and moving zigzagged.

"She still won’t wake, huh?" Sorren clicked his tongue.

"You should have left the criminal rider alive. At least, he knew how to ride." Stefan mumbled, with few curses.
