Chapter 70: 70. Carriage
Chapter Seventy – Carriage
Who could compare a stick of candle to a burning bush?
Laurel tore her eyes away from Sorren before all her self-confidence would be drained away.
"Yeah, maybe I should change my clothes." she hummed. There was no way she was going anywhere with him, looking like that. Why was he even born a man?
As he was distracted, she ran out of his quarters back to the maid quarters. She had to change her clothes. She had to. "Ouch—" she hit someone.
She glared at him before lowering her head, it was her mistake anyway. "I’m sorry."
"Why are you run—"
"Princess Laurel! Thank Moon goddess you haven’t gone yet!" Jessika cut Stefan short, rushing to the princess.
Laurel grabbed Jessika and the Alpha watched the two ladies hug like they haven’t seen each other in years. Like he wasn’t even there.
Laurel broke the hug and looked at Jessika determinedly, "I need new clothes. Do you have any?"
"What’s wrong with the ones you have on?"
"My pride as a lady has been trampled upon." Laurel sniffed dramatically. "Sorren has... I just need clothes."
Jessika smiled, guessing what happened. "Truly, the cooks had been staring at him since he sat on the roof. They say he carries himself with the elegance of a lady."
Jessika pulled Laurel away as they gossiped, ignoring the Alpha. "They all swore never to wear white as they’d always look inferior in it. Prince Sorren has destroyed us."
Stefan entered his brother’s quarters, feeling alarmed. His brother destroyed them? He found Sorren in his garden, wearing a tired expression on his face.
"Ah, you’re here. Please, help your younger brother out. Dig here and here. Don’t forget there. Thank you." Sorren leaned on a tree, dropping the shovel.
Stefan sighed. The cooks shouldn’t hurt their confidence because of his brother. They were surely less lazy than he was, and cooked better. He picked up the shovel.
"I told you about the Delta, right? Zara." She was one person Stefan wanted to keep his brother from.
Sorren nodded. "Yes, the only who kept you distress. A very interesting lady that I look forward to meet."
Stefan shook his head. As always, his younger brother always went for the most dangerous. "Be careful, she’s really mysterious."
Sorren clicked his tongue. "You’re just traumatized."
"I’m ready to go now."
They both turned to Laurel. She wore a black robe, with a hood that covered her head, hiding whatever she wore inside. "I didn’t think you two would wait for me though."
She picked her bag and carefully hung it behind her. The black robe, according to Jessika, was to conceal her dress and beauty till they reached the meeting.
But Laurel thought it was just extra baggage that wasn’t needed since they’d be walking.
"Your mate is truly interesting. I bet she must plan to kill someone since she dressed in all black." Sorren whispered to his brother.
The Alpha looked uninterested. Ladies in robe almost gave him heart attack since his last encounter with Jade.
A horse neighed loudly outside the quarters, getting Laurel’s attention. She hadn’t seen those creatures since she was little. There were barely any animals around her these days. Except the rats she shared her room with.
"Are we...? Did you call a carriage, Sorren?!"
Laurel turned when she heard Stefan raise his voice.
"Did you plan to walk all the way to High Moon?" Sorren asked back. "Well, go ahead. I won’t stop you but I’m not."
Laurel raised her hands to the heavens, thanking them. At least, she wouldn’t need to walk. The perks of having someone as lazy as Sorren join the travel.
But on entering the carriage, she felt self conscious again. Would it be only he, a divinely beautiful man, and she, cladded in black robes inside the carriage alone?
They would look like darkness and light.
The carriage rider got down and carried the prince’s luggage inside. There were more than three bags and Laurel wondered if he was going somewhere else after the meeting.
The carriage rider bowed to Stefan. "Alpha, I think you should join the carriage since the trip to High Moon would take a day."
"A day?!" Laurel and Stefan shouted in unison.
Sorren smirked. "Of course, while we enjoy the ride to the kingdom, we could stop at Jappongi to buy gifts for the King and other officials, buy supplies on our stay there, then stop at a motel for rest. If you want, we can visit a notable sight and extend the travel."
That was a whole tour! Laurel nodded in agreement. "A day is fine, a day is fine." She would be indirectly living her dream life through Sorren’s laziness.
"So this was why you wanted us to leave a day earlier?" Stefan sighed, getting into the carriage.
The rider climbed up and set off for High Moon Kingdom.
Then it dawned on Laurel, she was going to spend a day in a carriage with her mate and a beautiful man. "My life is over." She whispered.
"Dramatic much?" Elma came to the surface.
Laurel’s nose filled with intoxicating scents of strawberry and apples from her mate. "Sleep Elma. This confuse me."
"Staying by your mate confuses you?"
"Are you on my side or his?" Laurel snapped, making Elma laugh. "If you are confused, then he should be too."
Laure was sure it was different with him, he hated her deeply. The carriage got outside the border and she leaned towards the left window where Sorren was.
She hoped to catch sight of High Mountains pack that was rumored to have the greatest fortress in all the packs, as the mountains protected it.
It was a notable place Green Valleys Kingdom had that brought travelers to their part of the world.
Yet, Laurel’s eyes only met ruin, and ashes from fallen buildings and trees. The light of hope in her eyes faded and she slumped inside. War was never a good thing.
"The rest of the land is covered in dump. Why don’t you sell it to rogues to make a pack of?" Sorren said, looking out. "Like that mountain would make a good fortress."
Laurel frowned. "That mountain had owners before. You can’t just give it to rogues. I’m sure most of the pack members are trapped in Green Valleys."
"Green Valleys? And where’s that?" a smirk played on Stefan’s lips.
It took the princess a while to understand. "You call it Black Claws now. So dark and brutish, like you are."
The smirk fell from Stefan’s lips.
