Chapter Sixty-Nine – Ready!

(Five Days Later)

Laurel hung her bag behind her. Despite how big it looked, it didn’t weigh heavily. These were the little things that made her know she had grown stronger.

As well as the slightly muscular arms she was finally getting. Her training had been consistent and tougher. She handed her job of feeding Jade to the very willing maids.

Still, she was sure she wasn’t yet Delta ranked but she’d take the chance and follow them to the meeting. She could handle any random Lycan that attacked her.

A normal Lycan was as strong as a warrior werewolf and she was already past that.

No other powerful Lycan would attack a maid like her for no reason. She wanted to hope on that.

Also, attending the meeting will give her the chance to know about her mother’s death, and know more about the Lycans for future purposes.

She didn’t need to worry about the maids and Jessika. Jessika said that she’d stop trying to avoid the Beta and see if she’d use her speculations to gain favor from him.

That was very unlikely to happen, according to Laurel, but everything was worth a shot.

"Okay! Let’s go." She walked out of her room. She won’t be back for the next one week so she carried all the clothes she had.

Outside, she found the maids gathered, waiting for her. Lisa was the first one to jump on her, enveloping her in a hug before the others joined in a big hug.

It was a warm feeling but Laurel felt it was a little too warm as she could barely breathe. "I’d miss you guys too."

With hasty steps, she marched to Sorren’s quarters, one reason being she was excited about having to travel about and explore other places.

The other reason would be she held a dying plant that Sorren wanted to plant before his departure. It was a rare plant, even at Green Valleys, so it’d be sad if it died.

Yet Laurel found her steps slow down as she got closer to him. As Elma wasn’t active, she couldn’t catch his scent early enough, but he noticed her already.

She was leaving to an important meeting so she tried to look the important part. The dress from her room she had stolen, and most light jewelry.

Was that why he was looking at her? She made a small bow to him and went past.

"We’d be seeing ourselves more often in this journey. You should at least greet when we meet." Stefan said.

The princess raised a brow as she glanced back. Wasn’t bowing a greeting? Or did he expect her to hug him while chanting morning wishes? She shuddered over the thought.

He wouldn’t understand but as long as she didn’t get his scent, she barely felt the bond, especially as she conditioned herself to live without him.

It didn’t mean she was without the bond but after living eighteen years with her father and begging him to love her, she stopped. For him, she wouldn’t even try.

"I don’t even know what to say to you." Laurel sighed as she continued towards Sorren’s quarters.

Stefan stood there, rooted to the ground. He was taken aback by her honest reply, disappointment washed over him. "But what do I expect?" he rubbed his face.

He sensed Kai’s conflicted feelings and felt remorse. His wolf couldn’t keep blaming him for not giving into the mate bond, their mate no longer held interest.

Meanwhile, Laurel leaned on the walls of Sorren’s entrance, trying to catch her breath. The bag behind her seemed to be growing in size and weighing her down.

Where they to walk all the way to the Lycan Kingdom? She was sure she’d pass out on the road and Sorren would use her for his farm.

Shaking the thoughts off, she dropped the bag on the ground and knocked on the entrance door.

There were still no guard situated there. Did the Prince not worry of thieves?

"But then, who’d steal from the Alpha’s brother?" Laurel chuckled. "There’s no one that foolish."

"Oh, there are."

Laurel looked up at the roof. That was Sorren, right? The sun was high up and she couldn’t see his face but with the voice, it was definitely Sorren.

"I didn’t think you were the kind of person to climb a roof. That’s sort of rough, you know." and he was Mr. clean freak and Mr. no injuries. "I brought the plant though."

She dropped it in the ground, it was in a small vase. "Do take care of it. It’s called a Nightingale..."

Was he even listening to her? She raised her hand above her had to look at his face but the sun kept coming in the way. "Don’t you want to attend the meeting—"

"Princess, let me be! I’m drying my hair." Sorren snapped as she wouldn’t stop talking. Laurel made an ’oh’ sound. Still, who dried their hair by sitting on a roof?

"And while you are to be our maid at the meeting, you didn’t need to look the part very much." Sorren scoffed.

Laurel gazed down at herself. Did he mean her priceless dress and jewelry was what looked like a maid’s?

It wouldn’t be the worst thing he said to her but in that occasion, she felt offended by it.

Especially as she had the delusion that her mate stared at her because she looked different. She shut her eyes to calm herself. "You better look the part of a prince then."

She heard him jump down, then say. "Well, I try."

Laurel sighed, opening her eyes, but they widened at the sight before them. Prince Sorren stooped low to the plant she brought yet the mere pose looked like a work of art.

His long, black hair fell over his shoulder like midnight water, making his pale skin and soft features stand out. A beautiful hairpin adorned his hair.

His grey eyes that were usually emotionless seemed curious at the plant before him that it made Laurel chuckle.

His muscular frame was hidden inside the elegant white apparel that reminded Laurel of royal garment worn by her father and the Alphas of her old Kingdom.

A thin golden chain was around his neck and a subtle ring with a soft glimmer enhanced the otherworldly presence he was slapping on her face.

If Laurel didn’t know him, she’d be sure it was a princess of a farther kingdom that came to marry the Alpha. She might not complain.

Who could compare a stick of candle to a burning bush?
