Chapter 64: Her Resolve
Chapter Sixty-Four – Her Resolve
Cade knocked on the door before entering. He was in the royal library, a room wasted for books, as Cade felt. "Alpha? I’ve spoken with Jade."
He listened attentively for a response, before hearing a grunt behind him. He followed the sound to a table where Stefan was at, with many books opened.
"I’ve spoken with Jade." He repeated.
"I bet she rolled on the floor begging for forgiveness and a second chance?" Stefan asked, eyes still in his book.
Cade shook his head in the negative. "I’m afraid not. This time she added hurting Sorren to her threat, I think she’s out for the cook and you."
"Is that so? Thank you then."
Cade still stood there, anticipating more instructions. Was that all the Alpha’s reply would be to his fiancée being in prison, even if it was for a crime she actually committed?
He didn’t think he was that uninterested in Jade, even if he let her have her way sometimes. Was that actually due to being uninterested in her or due to him spoiling her?
"Any other issue, Cade?" Stefan took his eyes from the book. "Did Jade say something specific I should know?"
"Not quite. You mean I should leave? Jade would be in there till you leave and return from High Moon Kingdom."
Stefan’s eyes remained on the Beta, trying to decipher the meaning of his words. Why did everyone speak in codes around him?
Was there something he should’ve done to Jade before leaving? Maybe prevent her from hurting the people she tried to hurt?
If Sorren succeed, Laurel would join them to High Moon Kingdom. Then the cook, well, she worked in the main palace and there’d be little to no chance of meeting Jade.
Still, to be sure.
"You might want to keep an eye on the cook. In case, some maids loyal to Jade try to hurt her." Stefan ordered.
Cade gulped down saliva. Keep an eye on a cook that’s been avoiding him? It felt like his hardest mission yet.
But should that even be what his Alpha worried about? He sighed, making Stefan question if his reply was wrong.
Cade made a ninety degrees bow. "Alright! I’d do as you say. I might be too busy to see you off when you leave for the meeting, so have my wishes for safe journey now."
Stefan nodded. It wasn’t like the road was filled with rogues anymore. While surveying Green Valleys for the raid, they killed all rogues within, for extra measure.
The only rogues that could attack would be from far away, and they’d be sure to meet sure demise. Cade left after that.
Stefan went back to his books, reading about the last line of Lycan Hunters. He had not forgotten the symbolism he saw at the Damancas fellow’s boundary.
The last blood of Lycan Hunters amongst werewolves were amongst the Alphas he killed, the Alpha of Silent River Pack. He hadn’t seem impressive even still.
If the new appearance of a Lycan Hunter meant trouble was brewing, then it was best to settle it before his travel.
Still, he couldn’t trust this to anyone but himself, despite the possible trouble he might encounter, with his injuries that slowed him down.
If he asked Sorren to handle it, he might be lazy to. And Cade, he’d jump into conclusions quickly. So at the end of the day, it was one of his Alpha duties.
But to be extra careful, he’d get someone to come along. After all, that territory was no longer his.
Leaving the library, he headed to his room to change. On the way, he heard the chattering and chuckling of two girls that caught his attention.
What actually caught his attention was his mate’s scent. What’s Laurel doing in the kitchen? Was she transferred there? It would be tormenting for him.
"Tormenting to be with your own mate?" Kai scoffed.
It was his usual reprimanding so Stefan ignored him and listened to what they said. The other girl was cook Jessika.
"I’m telling you, the guard held out the tray to me, looking manly, then said, ’be careful next time, young lady’." The cook narrated, holding her cheeks.
Was she fawning over a common guard? Stefan checked his mate, who chuckled. "At least now, you’ve someone you fancy, you’d understand my daydream about a mate."
"So you’re daydreaming about finding your mate?" The cook pointed at her. "Well, hopefully you meet him as you follow the Alpha and Prince Soren."
Strangely, Laurel looked determined. "Yes, I’d definitely find him there. Or latch on any handsome strong man I find. I will return only with glory!"
The resolve made Stefan worried. So while Sorren was bringing her along to make them get along, the wolfess was going ahead with it to find herself a man?
"You can’t blame her. Her mate doesn’t want her." Kai scoffed again. Stefan walked away, feeling conflicted.
What made her think he’d release her to whichever man she’d latch unto? She would stay by his side, whether he was going to love her or not.
It was her fate for being mated to him, victim of her father’s acts. And he had a hardened heart to the fact.
"Alpha!"
Stefan paused his angry steps, exhaling. "Yes, Sigma. You’d be following me for a short visit. Were you busy...?"
He trailed off when he took in the boy’s appearance. Since when did he use lip ointment? And earrings?
"Um... are you feeling okay? Did you catch a cold and trying to hide your chapped lips? And the earrings?" Stefan couldn’t find a reason for that.
The boy pointed at his lips. "Oh this? Well, Prince Sorren was trying it out on me." He touched the earring, "He wanted to see how they fit. It matches him more though."
Prince Sorren? "You don’t mean my brother, do you?"
Sigma nodded firmly. "You know another Sorren?"
A sigh left Stefan. Sorren and jewelry again? He really liked hogging attention, no matter how he denied it. "We are going to visit someone. Wipe your lips please."
Sigma obeyed, then touched his ears. "But can I keep the earrings though? I kind of like them."
"Do what you want. Let’s go."
