Chapter Sixty-One – He never worries
Laurel hurried towards the maid quarters. Her mate didn’t come after her, thankfully. And why would he?
She shouldn’t expect so much from that Lycan.
She slowed down on seeing Sorren with the guards, at the entrance. What did he want again?
"Prince Sorren." She said politely, as she was in front of the guards. "I have started my punishment, do you need something else from me?"
"Send a maid to the Alpha’s quarters. One that can help in doing minor house duties. Jade is gone but the Alpha’s quarters shouldn’t be a mess."
Laurel’s head remained down but she felt like laughing. So it had been Jade who cleaned the Alpha’s quarters?
She was so insecure about someone taking her fiancé that she offered to do bountiful menial work instead?
Sorren noticed the smile playing in Laurel’s lips. "Do I make myself clear, princess? You should at least answer me, before finding the humor in my words."
Laurel wore a straight face, looking up. Did something bite his ass this morning? "I heard. I’d arrange a maid."
Sorren left the maid quarters, heading towards the prison. The guards in front bowed as he got in, he took the keys from one of them and walked in.
"You can leave, I’d ask the maids that are closer to watch here. It’s not like we have a vicious criminal in here."
The guards had pleased expressions as they bowed and scurried away. Sorren continued into the prison. His eyes found a dead rat in front of him and he stopped. Did the prison smell worse since Laurel left or was it just him?
"Brother, if you are in there, I’d like us to talk."
Stefan was almost asleep where he leaned on. He turned towards the voice. "Jade is asleep. You can come in."
Sorren’s eyes remained on the dead rat. "For some reasons, including ’I don’t want to see Jade’, I won’t be coming. Meet me outside." He turned around.
Such a demanding younger brother. Stefan rubbed his temples, forcing himself up. His body felt less pain now.
He glanced at Jade once more, before leaving. On his way, he stepped on the dead rat and looked down.
A smile came to Stefan’s face. "So that’s why he refused to come in? Clean freak."
Sorren was seated at the guards station. "You fell asleep in there? You’re impossible." He said as Stefan got out.
There was silence between them before Stefan cleared his throat loudly. "Didn’t you want to talk?"
"I was giving you chance to enjoy fresh breath after being holed up in there." Sorren replied calmly.
"Well, thank you for the consideration but go on." Stefan sighed. He had been getting frustrated more often, these days. "I have no one to follow me to the Packs Meeting."
Didn’t he say he should talk? Sorren shook his head. "Then don’t go. Ultimate form of rebellion. Reject the King’s invitation. Your injuries could be an excuse."
Stefan gave him the side eyes. It’s always easy for his brother to suggest those things when he wouldn’t be the one to bear the consequences for the actions.
Still, that was an attractive option but Stefan had looked forward to the meeting so much to not attend.
"I’m thankful that I’m your older brother." Stefan sighed. "I wonder the things you’d have made me do."
It also made Stefan pity Sigma who was raised by Sorren. The kid would have no fear of danger. "But I really have no one to go with. There’s a requirement for two or three."
"How dare that Lycan King put a restriction on who you should invite?" Sorren kept it on.
Stefan ignored him and added. "So you’d come with me as a second person, at least."
Sorren was quiet before smiling. "That’s funny."
"I am serious!" His brother retorted.
"Should I be laughing now?"
"Sorren!" Stefan called. "I’m serious. Cade can’t come for obvious reasons. Also, I’d like him keeping an eye on Jade. Maybe she’d tell him why she did that."
Sorren tilted his head, confused. "You want Cade to keep eye on Jade? Do you want her dead before you return?"
"Then should I leave her to you?"
"I could kill her before you even leave."
"Then, with Sigma?"
Sorren grinned at him.
"Of course, that’s like leaving her to you." Stefan slapped the wall. "I don’t even know why she would do something like that! Don’t you get worried about her mental health?" Or was it because he’s the Alpha that he worried much?
He looked at his brother who fondled with keys, obviously waiting for his ’emotional wreck session’ to be over.
He surely never worried for anything and somehow he made Sigma to be able to take care of himself. The only time Stefan saw him being an emotional wreck was when their parents died, never again, since then.
"Do you need a third person to attend the Lycan Packs Meeting?" Sorren asked.
Stefan sat up. So he agreed to be the second person? "Do you have any one in mind? The offer is open."
"Your mate."
Stefan’s anticipation died. He felt Kai’s growing interest. "Oh, so you don’t like Jade but you have no problem with an enemy’s daughter?" Stefan asked sarcastically.
"Obviously." Sorren replied honestly.
Why was he liked this? "I won’t do it, for a good reason." Stefan hesitated. "She wouldn’t want to come anyway."
"And if I make her come? And what’s that good reason?" Sorren asked. He asked even if knew the silly reason his brother would come up with.
A reason that he’d always had at the tip of his tongue to dish at times like this. It was more of a selfless excuse than a constructive reason.
"What exactly do you gain from Laurel following us?" The Alpha tried to divert from the question.
"I won’t be bored."
That made Stefan even more reluctant to bring her along. "And?" Surely they should be more.
"Well, maybe, you’d see her as more than your enemy’s daughter. She could be more than that. Could."
That meant he didn’t know if she was more than an enemy’s daughter? Shouldn’t he know Laurel more? "Your points aren’t very convincing, Sorren."
They stayed quiet for a while.
"My wolf wants her."
Sorren quickly looked at his brother, shocked by the sudden confession. "I don’t know but should I act like I didn’t hear that?"
"You did." Stefan ran his hand through his hair. "That’s the good reason that Laurel should stay away."
"Hmm. Well, finally here it is."
"Here is what?" Stefan asked quickly.
"That your excuse. A thing about you I really hate."
Stefan almost panicked. "Hate is a strong word."
"I really dislike it then. When you deprive yourself from what you want because of ’being Alpha’ or ’a revenge’." Sorren sighed. "But thankfully you have a smart wolf to balance the stupidity."
Hate and Stupidity in one day? Stefan looked at the heavens. "So what are you saying in essence?"
