Chapter 60: 60. Drugged
Chapter Sixty – Drugged
With hurried steps, Laurel left for the prison. The guards were confused why the maids cheered and howled in joy as she walked out.
Wasn’t she just going to serve her punishment? It was like, despite being in captivity, she was still their princess.
Laurel still held the charm by her side. Darren wouldn’t be able to know how grateful she was for this.
If she had sneaked into Stefan’s room, immediately he’d know she was his mate. Her plan to speak was a total fail because she count fake Jade’s voice.
She was lucky she brought the handwritten message on paper from Jessika that she was supposed to practice.
The tone Stefan spoke to Jade with, it wasn’t a romantic tone at all. Just familiar but strict. Like she was his little sister being bad.
Was that how he actually saw Jade? A little sister? Then was Jade the delusional one? He even told her to not sulk and act strong? Can’t she express herself around him?
The more Laurel thought about Stefan’s and Jade’s relationship, the more she saw questions that seemingly leaned towards Jade being in a one-sided relationship.
Because if Stefan truly loved her, he wouldn’t hide the fact he had a mate from her for months already.
Laurel made a small bow to the prison guards at the entrance. She expected them to ask her why she was there but they only nodded and gestured for her to go in.
"They are well informed, I see." Laurel smiled, hurrying deep into the prison with the tray in her hands. She hadn’t gone so deep when she heard a sound.
She turned. Why was Jade’s prison kept so close to the entrance? She could still see light!
Laurel’s prison had been so deep on that she didn’t know any guard was close, apart from the one at her door.
But then, she and Jade were different. Jade was an official who did something wrong, while she was an enemy who got captured.
"Lady Jade, your meal." Laurel called her attention.
Jade looked up, wiping the tears from her eyes. The bitch before her was the last person she wanted to see.
She avoided looking at Laurel to not see a mocking smirk but her eyes had already checked her face to know who she was, yet she saw no mockery on the lady’s face.
Jade moved closer. "Hmm." They should have swapped positions! It infuriated Jade so much.
"By any chance, are the maids talking about me? I mean, did they happen to know what exactly I did to be dragged to prison in such a humiliating way." She cried.
Laurel wore a poker face. Were tears supposed to move her? Definitely not. Just like hers didn’t move for maids.
"The maids only heard you’re in prison when Prince Sorren ordered me to serve you. We know nothing."
Jade pulled the tray of food closer to herself, then opened it. The cover fell noisily. "Wh-What is this?"
The soup looked like tea, with few assortments floating in it. The rice it came with looked uncooked and had stones?
"Prison food."
If not that Laurel has a poker face while saying that, Jade might have thought she was being mocked. She still felt she was being mocked, despite the poker face. "Why?"
Wasn’t it obvious? "You’re in prison." Laurel stated.
It definitely sounded like she was being mocked. Jade shoved the tray aside, spilling more than half it’s content.
"I’d be released from here when Stefan wakes up from sleep then you’d see what I’d do to you and your friend!"
Laurel sighed internally. If Jade didn’t eat the food, then she’d not be able to get drugged and forget what had happened.
If she incessantly deny hurting Stefan then the officials would suspect that she was framed. That couldn’t happen. She had to be fooled too.
"The food is this way because the maids’ cooking skills are poor. Here, you can try this Lady Jade. It’s something I made myself." Laurel sneaked in freshly made bread.
Jade glared at her, but the smell of freshly made bread did things to her nose. Why was this bitch being nice to her? The bread tasted heavenly and just what she wanted.
Laurel silently watched her eat the drugged bread. At least, for two hours she would be asleep and she’d forget what happened for a whole day.
Only the emotions she felt would remain.
Laurel thought the drug was scary but Damancas was a place of many mysteries. It was even rumored to still house witches and some legendary Lycan Hunters.
The bread fell off Jade’s hand as she collapsed to the ground. It was finally working. Laurel stretched to take the bread out. She spilled the soup that had the drug.
Now, there was no more evidence. She could just say Jade was unwilling to eat the food. She left Jade.
On her way out, she heard footsteps and walked slowly, holding the tray in her hand.
It could probably be Cade coming to see if Jade looked miserable. She looked down and passed the figure.
"Laurel?"
She froze. It was Stefan? Well, just as he couldn’t get her scent as his mate, she couldn’t get his as her mate too...
Then it occurred to her. HE COULDN’T GET HER SCENT AS HIS MATE TOO! He’d definitely wonder what was up. She dashed towards the door.
If he finds out about the charm, then thinking of the possible ways she could use it wouldn’t be hard.
Stefan watched his mate run the moment he called her. He couldn’t catch her scent. Were his senses that weak?
He felt pain all over but he was an Alpha and should be strong all the time. He had sneaked out of the room to come here. Sorren would bite his ears off, if he realized.
Stefan only wanted to know why Jade would behave that way? She was never rebellious.
On getting to her prison, he found her asleep, with a meal spilled by her side. He mind linked to the guards outside. "Get Jade another meal."
He slowly leaned on the wall besides the prison. He owed his best friend to protect his little sister. If Jade would somehow apologize for her act, then he’d forgive her.
To him, hurting Jade – the only survival of his best friend who gave his life for him – was also hurting his best friend.
And that was something he couldn’t bear to do.
"Such amazing resolve. But you can hurt our mate."
It was Kai again. Stefan shut his eyes tightly. "Our mate is a completely different story, Kai,... I think."
