Chapter Fifty-Six – Her Father
It worried Laurel, that maybe she had been too harsh on Valkyrie. It was her mate she was avenging, after all. Any werewolf would feel her annoyance.
"But you haven’t tried killing Stefan for all the things he’d done to you, why should she put someone in trouble because of her mate?" Elma tsked.
"That isn’t the point, you know." Laurel sighed. "Stefan is my mate in this instance, how do you think I’d avenge against him?" Her wolf stayed quiet.
Laurel sighted Jessika running towards her. The cook always looked left, right, back and upwards when moving, all in bid to make sure Beta Cade wasn’t close.
She groaned when she finally reached Laurel. "Ah, your highness, I don’t really think I can keep this up. My heart feels like bursting whenever I hear a footstep."
There was no reaction from Laurel. Jessika waved in front of her face, bringing her back to reality. "You aren’t still daydreaming about meeting your mate here, are you?"
That was far from her thoughts. Laurel smiled. "Just thinking of when I’d finally be able to travel out of these lands. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while."
No part of her had been outside Green Valleys Kingdom, not even her belongings, except the imported ones.
The thoughts she’d harbored for long, even added the possibility that her mate would be the one to save her from her sad life, to travel the world with her.
But not only did her mate not save her, but he trapped her within the confinements of a prison, and later, a maid quarters.
"Jessika, do you have any idea how can I fake my death then escape here? Maybe leave to Darren’s...?"
The cook thought deeply before sighing. "Master Darren once said that there’s a reason the Alpha keeps you here."
Laurel’s remaining words stuck in her throat. Could Darren have realized she was Stefan’s mate? What did he think she should do then?
But on looking at Jessika, she only saw a sentimental look. She didn’t know anything yet. "Ah, to torment me?"
"Probably." Jessika agreed with a nod. "To demean your pride, but thankfully, you keep getting strong."
Growing strong was a recent development. And only thanks to Sorren, but Laurel didn’t refute. "I guess."
Jessika frowned slightly. "I mean it. You really are. You broke Lead Warrior rank in three days. That’s amazing!"
Laurel nodded before realizing. Lead Warrior? "I think you mean warrior rank. And that was three days ago—"
"No, I mean what I said." Jessika smiled. "You are no longer warrior ranked. Lead Warrior and Warrior ranks don’t have a clear difference but you mostly feel a sense of confidence."
"Like when you scolded Valkyrie, a warrior, and she listened. If you were the same rank as her, she could’ve protested." Jessika continued. "I couldn’t interject and only listen to you. It’s the same aura my Lead Warrior gives."
Should she take her words for real or keep at her training? Laurel was unsure. She got to Lead Warrior already?
It wasn’t actually ’already’ since it should’ve been her starting point but since it wasn’t, it meant a lot to Laurel.
"I’m surprised by this! The most important information I know about my mother is that she was a Lead Warrior." Laurel gushed. "And now, I am too!"
"You know it’s not much of a big deal, right?"
Laurel frowned. Why did she always remind her that her achievements weren’t that great! "I know Jessika, I should have been higher ranked already but—"
"Ah, no. That’s not what I meant, Princess. " Jessika quickly countered. "It’d be mean of me to say that."
Well, she had before. Laurel folded her arms. "Then, what isn’t a big deal in breaking ranks in three days?"
Jessika shrugged. "Well, have you thought what type of man your father was? The reason the current Alpha really despise you was because your father attacked his pack."
That’s the first information Laurel had drilled into her skull when the pack was attacked and she was put in prison.
For an attack that happened when she was three, that’s also when her father begin treating her badly. In other words, that was his bad temper era.
"But did you know.." Jessika looked around to know if anyone was listening. "... that Stefan’s father was a Lycan Alpha King, who had werewolf packs under his flag?"
Lycan Alpha King? Like the one Stefan submitted under? Could that be why Sorren was a prince? She had always wondered why he was called Prince.
"Eh? He must’ve been really cool. And maybe nice too, to have werewolf packs under him." Laurel said.
Jade had told her that Werewolves and Lycans lived as one, in her old pack, and even intermarried.
"Yeah, but your father, Alpha King Titus raided a Lycan Kingdom, with other packs and killed all officials! Your father was a really formidable man!" Jessika shouted.
The princess was speechless, staring into void. Her father was that strong? He had destroyed a Lycan King in his life time, and the other packs of werewolves for submitting to a Lycan? That was amazing and tearful, at the same time.
"Of course it’d sound less impressive since Alpha Stefan defeated your father but..." Jessika came close. "It’s said that he drugged their wine on the day of the ball."
It was definitely how it happened. Laurel huffed. She had seen him moving around that day before the calamity.
"Still, some said that your father still pulled a fight in his drunken state, before his death. He had badly injured the Delta, that was why the Delta was indoors for a while."
Sigma? Laurel remembered that he never visited her till later. Sorren too, who might have been taking care of him.
She had so many mixed emotions to the news of how brave and powerful her father had been. Mainly due to the fact that he hurt even werewolves.
And also because he never protected her but caused her pain. Another reason would be, she was a clear contrast to her father’s power. She was a really weak thing.
"Why are you telling me all this unverified gossip though?" Laurel raised a brow. "It’s not making me feel better."
Jessika hesitated. "Didn’t you get it? I’m saying, like your father, you have great potential! Breaking a rank in three days shouldn’t be a big deal as his daughter you are."
So it had been a compliment? Laurel smiled. "Ah, thank you. I didn’t understand at first. I’d keep doing my best."
Somehow she felt more great things were expected from her, but there was no pressure attached to the feeling. Instead, she felt she could actually not disappoint them.
