Chapter 55: Stupid Resolve
Chapter Fifty-Five – Stupid Resolve
A warrior rank felt very powerful. Laurel found herself being able to complete fifty pushups, and her arms...
"Biceps! Aren’t these biceps?!"
Jessika poked the little bump on the Princess’s arms. "You don’t look like you broke warrior rank at all."
That was enough to slump Laurel shoulders. She was really doing her best but her body was used to being lean that it didn’t care about adding weight in the right places.
"Well, no one would believe Prince Sorren broke Beta Rank either because he doesn’t look very bulky. He looks like a tall pretty girl instead."
Laurel unconsciously glared at her. "He has a perfect size. What are you taking about?" She realized her words and covered her mouth.
Jessika just smirked. "Yeah, unlike Beta Cade that looks like a hunk. Honestly, I feel he’s been tracking me since two days ago, because of that incident."
Tracking her? Laurel looked worried. She had pulled Jessika out of his sight and ran off, but it seemed it was all for naught if he already noticed her.
Jessika currently lived like a pack member, not a maid like them. If any maid got sick, the guards were unwilling to get medicine but Laurel could get some from Jessika who was free.
She was their only connection to the outside world. Beta Cade should really take his eyes off her.
"Maybe, you should come up with something to tell him. A white lie." Laurel suggested.
Jessika shook her head vehemently. "No way. He even dropped by the kitchen one time and I had to hide behind a cupboard. Don’t subject me to that, please."
It was becoming really serious. "But we made it sound like we just noticed the food was poisoned and not that we poisoned it so why will he be..."
But then it clicked to Laurel, their excuse wasn’t good. Poisoning a Beta was a serious offense, even worse when it’s someone like Beta Cade.
He would come for them, and keep coming till they croak out who dared to poison his food. Also, there’s the issue of Valkyrie attempting to do it again.
"What poisoned food are you two talking about?"
Jessika and Laurel turned to the door. "Valkyrie?" Speaking of the devil.
She entered their room. There were now dark eye bags under her eyes. "Do you mean Beta Cade? You heard he was nearly poisoned, right?"
Laurel frowned. "We know you did it. No need to act oblivious. And now, Jessika is in trouble for covering..."
"Why!" Valkyrie suddenly barked.
Laurel went back. Why? Is that even a question? Her frown deepened. "It might look like revenge to you, but it’s screaming suicide and trouble to me."
"So you knew why I wanted to do it yet you stopped it?" Valkyrie clenched her fists.
Jessika came in front of Laurel. "I-I was the one who stopped the food, not the princess. But I very much agree with what she’s saying. Beta Cade would only bring..."
"And so what? We are only animals to them! Why do we have to keep quiet while they treat us this way..."
"I said I get your point, Valkyrie!" Laurel raised her voice, leaving Jessika’s back. "But my point remains, it’s suicide. What happened to staying out of trouble? You told me!"
"That was then! Now, I don’t care!" her voice broke at the end. "I don’t care." She bent her head.
Laurel was quiet, then exhaled. "Then, get a better plan."
Jessika and Valkyrie looked at her.
"You could have made a plan that wouldn’t be tracked by to us and no one gets in trouble." Laurel rephrased. "Do you think I care what happens to Beta Cade?"
That Beta had treated her badly too so she didn’t give even a rat’s ass about him. If Valkyrie could make a better plan to wipe him off, that would be good.
But at their current situation, they can’t. "You don’t care about the consequences but did you think for once, what would’ve happened to the cook who delivered the food?"
Jessika’s eyes widened. Definitely, her senior would’ve be blamed and killed. The Alpha won’t want an investigation even she denied it. He’d be too angry to listen.
"If you’re so fearless to kill Beta Cade, then make a better plan, and this time, do it yourself!" Laurel snapped.
Her tone shocked and annoyed Valkyrie at the same time. "You don’t get it. I lost my mate. It’s like dying..."
"Don’t. Don’t try to tell me what I can’t relate to because you know I can’t. But my point is, and will always be, that your plan lacked efficiency." Laurel spelt out.
Her words made Jessika panic. Was she sure she could be that blunt with Valkyrie? The girl was mourning so obviously wasn’t thinking straight.
Still Jessika kept her eyes alert in case Valkyrie charged at the princess. She barely knew the werewolfess and had only seen her make stupid decisions.
Valkyrie was quiet so Laurel spoke calmly. "You see, the poison mightn’t have worked, or if it did, or didn’t infact, the innocent cook would’ve been blamed."
"I won’t let her be blamed." Valkyrie protested. "I’d have taken the blame for it and receive the consequences."
That was even worse. Laurel began barking again. "If you did step up, you’d die! At the end, you died because of a shameless man who already killed your mate! It’s a stupid plan and resolve! Warrior Valkyrie, you can do better!"
Hearing her name merged with her rank seemed to snap Valkyrie out of the emotional turmoil she had been in. "You... don’t get it." She repeated, but with less resolve.
Jessika stared intently at the both of them, a small smile coming to her lips. Maybe she shouldn’t worry too much.
Laurel was a princess after all. Whether or not she grew into it, she definitely knew how to talk sense into someone.
Even if she treaded dangerously, it seemed to work.
Laurel placed her hand on Valkyrie’s shoulders. "It will be easier going after Beta Cade one on one. That way you’d leave no witness or someone that’d suffer for it. Okay?"
That meant she had to grow stronger, Valkyrie wiped off the tears that rolled down. "I understand, your highness."
